Christian Haudum	d8cc1cea83	chore: Make dedicated iterator package (#13273) ... Iterators of various types are widely used throughout the Loki code base. With the recent code additions of the bloom filters, a new set of utility functions for iterators emerged in `github.com/grafana/loki/v3/pkg/storage/bloom/v1`. The package defines interfaces for various common types, but also provides implementations to create and compose new iterators that implement these interfaces. This new package uses Go Generics. - However, at the current state, there are multiple iterator interfaces and implementations, which adds cognitive overhead in understanding how they work and which ones should be used. The idea is to unify them into a single iterator lib for Loki. - As a first step towards a single iterator library for the Loki code base, this PR moves the utilities from the `pkg/storage/bloom/v1` package to the `pkg/iter/v2` package. - Second, it changes the existing `EntryIterator` and `SampleIterator` iterators to "inherit" `v2.CloseIterator` in order to expose the same function names. - And lastly, naming conventions of iterator interfaces and structs are unified. Dylan Guedes	c1fada9af0	refactor: Remove unnecessary spanlogger usage (#13255) ... Historically, we've been using `spanlogger` to enrich our spans. That isn't the right usage for it (as of now), as they'll be emitting log lines. Our current usage is causing: - Noisy/important log lines less visible - Unnecessary logging volume - Spread of the bad practice. With this PR I'm moving away from `spanlogger` all places where the log message is too bad or nonexistent. That's because these cases are indicating we don't care about that log line at all, and only about the data injected in the span.	2 years ago

I tested it on a dev cell and works fine. <img width="1296" alt="image" src="https://github.com/grafana/loki/assets/8354290/6177e0ca-02ce-48cd-a17f-0739dc3caa0a"> **Note**: With these changes, the JSON marshal unmarshal functions for the tail are no longer used ([example][1]) so I think we can remove them. Also, the new Tail response is no longer used, so we can also make it an alias to the _legacy_ one. Let's do it on a follow-up PR to avoid making this one bigger. Salva Corts	52a3f16039	Flag categorize labels on streams response (#10419) ... We recently introduced support for ingesting and querying structured metadata in Loki. This adds a new dimension to Loki's labels since now we arguably have three categories of labels: _stream_, _structured metadata_, and _parsed_ labels. Depending on the origin of the labels, they should be used in LogQL expressions differently to achieve optimal performance. _stream_ labels should be added to stream matchers, _structured metadata_ labels should be used in a filter expression before any parsing expression, and _parsed_ labels should be placed after the parser expression extracting them. The Grafana UI has a hard time dealing with this same problem. Before https://github.com/grafana/grafana/pull/73955, the filtering functionality in Grafana was broken since it was not able to distinguish between _stream_ and _structured metadata_ labels. Also, as soon as a parser expression was added to the query, filters added by Grafana would be appended to the end of the query regardless of the label category. The PR above implements a workaround for this problem but needs a better API on Loki's end to mitigate all corner cases. From a UX perspective, being able to categorize labels in metric queries doesn't have any benefit yet. Having said that, supporting this for metric queries would require some minor refactoring on top of what has been implemented here. If we decide to do that, I think we should do it on a separate PR to avoid making this PR even larger. I also decided to leave out support for Tail queries to avoid making this PR even larger. Once this one gets merged, we can work to support tailing. --- **Note to reviewers** This PR is huge since we need to forward categorized all over the codebase (from parsing logs all the way to marshaling), fortunately, many of the changes come from updating tests and refactoring iterators. The only place where I can see the query is in the `url` attribute of the `loki_api_v1_query_range` handler, but since it’s encoded it’s kinda difficult to read. If it's elsewhere it's not quite obvious. Signed-off-by: Edward Welch <edward.welch@grafana.com> **What this PR does / why we need it**: Loki does not currently split queries by time to a value smaller than what's in the [range] of a range query. Example ``` sum(rate({job="foo"}[2d])) ``` Imagine now this query being executed over a longer window of a few days with a step of something like 30m. Every step evaluation would query the last [2d] of data. There are use cases where this is desired, specifically if you force the step to match the value in the range, however what is more common is someone accidentally uses `[$__range]` in here instead of `[$__interval]` within Grafana and then sets the query time selector to a large value like 7 days. This PR adds a limit which will fail queries that set the [range] value higher than the configured limit. It's disabled by default. E.g. the maximum query length could be seven days but based on the query or an admins decision a query should just have a maximum length of one day. This is where per-request limits come into play. They are passed via the `X-Loki-Query-Limit` header and extracted into the requests context. This new middleware will timeout requests based on the new per-tenant query timeout * Add span logs to query calls missing it * Deprecate `engine.timeout` configuration The motivation to change this configuration to be per-tenant instead of global is that it makes sense to alleviate the timeout for particular tenants or make it more strict for others. Especially useful for scenarios where the Loki client doesn't handle context cancellations correctly; in such scenarios, since Loki would still process expensive queries that were canceled, this allows one to have small timeouts for most tenants, which will help mitigate unnecessary work without having a timeout that is too short for important tenants.	3 years ago
