Stop using global logger in modules (#11051)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Refactors Loki to inject logger from the constructors instead of using
global logger variable. It is generally considered a good practice.
**Which issue(s) this PR fixes**:

Support categorized labels in Tailing (#11079)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
This is a follow-up PR for https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/10419
adding support for tailing.
I tested it on a dev cell and works fine.
<img width="1296" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/grafana/loki/assets/8354290/6177e0ca-02ce-48cd-a17f-0739dc3caa0a">
**Note**: With these changes, the JSON marshal unmarshal functions for
the tail are no longer used ([example][1]) so I think we can remove
them. Also, the new Tail response is no longer used, so we can also make
it an alias to the _legacy_ one. Let's do it on a follow-up PR to avoid
making this one bigger.

Use metrics namespace for more metrics (#11025)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Use the metrics namespace setting instead of hardcoding to `cortex`.

Add basic structure of bloom gateways (#10782)
### Summary
This pull requests adds the basic structure for the new bloom gateway component.

config: loki better defaults (#10793)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Updates some of the configuration defaults to provide a better
experience for users out of the box.
I tried to add notes for non-trivial changes explaining the reason.
| configuration | new default | old default | notes |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | ----------- |
----------- | --------
| `compactor.delete-max-interval` | 24h | 0 | splits the delete requests
into intervals no longer than `delete_max_interval` |
| `distributor.max-line-size` | 256KB | 0 | - |
| `ingester.sync-period` | 1h | 0 | ensures that the chunk cuts for a
given stream are synchronized across the ingesters in the replication
set. Helps with deduplicating chunks. |
| `ingester.sync-min-utilization` | 0.1 | 0 | ^ |
| `frontend.max-querier-bytes-read` | 150GB | 0 | - |
| `frontend.max-cache-freshness` | 10m | 1m | avoid caching results for
data that is still in churn |
| `frontend.max-stats-cache-freshness` | 10m | 0 | avoid caching results
for data that is still in churn |
| `memcached.batchsize` | 256 | 1024 | - |
| `memcached.parallelism` | 10 | 100 | - |
| `querier.tsdb-max-query-parallelism` | 128 | 512 | avoid over
parallelising queries for smaller installations |
| `querier.split-queries-by-interval` | 1h | 30m | avoid over
parallelising queries for smaller installations |
| `querier.compress-http-responses` | true | false | compress response
if the request accepts gzip encoding |
| `query-scheduler.max-outstanding-requests-per-tenant` | 32000 | 100 |
current default is too small, opening a big dashboard could hit this
limit |
| `validation.max-label-names-per-series` | 15 | 30 | reducing this to
avoid blowing up the series count and index size. Also enforces users to
think about what labels are being added. |
**Special notes for your reviewer**:
regarding `TestQueryTSDB_WithCachedPostings`:
removed the assert on get calls as this is hard to get right (splits,
querySize mw making stats calls)
validating additions to the cache and misses is more important here I
think.

Update Prometheus dependency to v2.46.0 (#10777)
This PR updates the Prometheus dependency to v2.46.0. We need this to update the Agent to use Prometheus' Native Histograms after some bug fixes in the latest version. I bumped the version in go.mod, ran `go mod tidy && go mod vendor` and fixed compilation issues. **Special notes for your reviewer**: The only changes needed to have `make all` successfully compile was to use the new `wlog.NewSize` to use wlog.CompressionNone (instead of false), and wlog.CompressionSnappy (the default, instead of true), as well as add a new argument to the textparse.New constructor to work as it did without scraping native histograms via protobuf. I don't think there are any other user-facing changes or changes related to Loki. --------- Signed-off-by: Paschalis Tsilias <paschalis.tsilias@grafana.com> |

chore(storage): Restructure shipper packages (#10729)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
This PR restructures the code for the shipper component of the Loki storage layer.
New package layout:
```console
$ tree -d pkg/storage/stores/shipper
pkg/storage/stores/shipper
├── indexgateway
├── storage
├── testutil
├── tsdb
│ ├── index
│ ├── testdata
23 directories
```
* TSDB and BoltDB specific code is under `./pkg/storage/stores/shipper/indexshipper/tsdb` and `./pkg/storage/stores/shipper/indexshipper/boltdb` respectively.
* Common code for both TSDB and BoltDB is directly under `./pkg/storage/stores/shipper/indexshipper` and subdirectories, such as `uploads/`, `downloads/`, `compactor/`, ...
**Special notes for your reviewer**:
This PR is identical to https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/10724 except of the package `pkg/storage/stores/indexshipper` the package is `pkg/storage/stores/shipper/indexshipper` (one level deeper).

Ingester: Change log line level and make jitter potentially longer. (#10689)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: - Change our sleep log line from `level=debug` to `level=info` to allow visibility of it without having to change the log line level of distributors as a whole - Make the flush jitter to be 20% of flush check period instead of 1%. This means that, for the default 30s flush check period, the jitter will be at most 6s. |

chore(storage): Simplify store interfaces and abstractions (pt 2) (#10454)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
* Remove preemptive interface from indexReaderWriter and make it an exported struct
* Compose IngesterStore and QuerierStore
The ingester and querier do not require a store that implements the full
interface, but can accept stores that are a subset of the interfaces.
Therefore we can make specific interfaces that are accepted by the
ingester and querier constructors.
* Split up ChunkFetcher interface
This commit splits the ChunkFetcher interface into a ChunkFetcher and a
ChunkFetcherProvider interface.
This has the advantage that methods can allow accepting smaller interfaces.
This commit also renames the `GetChunkRefs()` method of the ChunkFetcher
interface into `GetChunks()`, because it returns a `[][]chunk.Chunk`,
not a `[]chunk.ChunkRef` type.

Remove dependency on Bigchunk, which is a leftover of Cortex and is only used in tests (#10354)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR removes the dependency on "Bigchunk", which is a "default" implementation of the `chunk.Data` interface and used only in tests. **Special notes for your reviewer**: The PR replaces the usage of this chunk type with the Loki implementation (`chunkenc.MemChunk` wrapped into `chunkenc.Facade`) where possible. In case where it was not possible (tests in `pkg/storage/chunk` package) due to otherwise circular import, it was replaces by the `chunk.dummyChunk` implementation, which is just a no-op that implements `chunk.Data` interface) The PR also removes the protos for the ingester client (`pkg/ingester/client/ingester.proto`) which were only referenced in the removed `pkg/util/chunkcompat/compat.go` file. Pin `chunk` and `index` format to `schema` version. (#10213)
We pin all three `Chunk`, `HeadBlock` and `TSDB` Version to `schema` version in period config. This is the following mapping (after being discussed with @owen-d and @sandeepsukhani ) `v12` (current existing schema) - ChunkFormatV3 (UnorderedHeadBlock) + TSDBv2 `v13` (introducing new schema) - ChunkFormatV4 (UnorderedWithNonIndexedLabelsHeadBlockFmt) + TSDBv3 Note the new schema `v13` supports the latest chunk and index format. **NOTES for Reviewer** 1. General approach is we removed the idea of `index.LiveFormat`, `chunkenc.DefaultChunkFormat` and `chunkenc.DefaultHeadBlockFmt` and made following two changes. These variables were used before to tie chunk and tsdb formats specific to Loki versions. This PR remove that coupling and pin these formats to `schema` version instead. 1. These variables were replaced with explicit chunk and index formats within those packages (and it's tests) 2. If these variables were used outside it's own packages say by ingester, compactor, etc. Then we extract correct chunk and index versions from the `schema` config. 2. Add two methods to `periodConfig`. (1) `ChunkFormat()` returning chunk and head format tied to schema (2) `TSDBFormat()` returning tsdb format tied to schema. 2. Other ideas I thought of doing but didn't end up doing is make `ChunkFormat` and `IndexFormat` as separate type (rather than `byte` and `int` currently. Similar to `HeadBlockFmt` type). But didnt' do it eventually to keep the PR small and don't want to complicate with lots of changes. 4. Moved couple of test cases from `chunkenc` to `config` package, because the test case was actually testing methods on `schemaconfig` and it was creating cycling dependencies. --------- Signed-off-by: Kaviraj <kavirajkanagaraj@gmail.com> |

Tracing: elide small traces for Stats call (#10308)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
At work I see a lot of traces getting data dropped due to being tens of
megabytes in size.
Looking at what was captured, I see many many repeats of these four
spans:
<img width="1070" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/grafana/loki/assets/8125524/4268e664-6910-49bb-8f68-69b139a5a66b">
Events on the parent trace are cheaper and, for small operations like
this, just as useful.
Where there was an event line I added a `function` field matching the
previous span name.
For `storeEntry.Stats()` I didn't add an event line as it doesn't seem
to do very much.
But please correct me; I'm not hugely familiar with the Loki codebase.

Add initial delay before starting flush loop (#9995)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Delay the first flush operation by up to 0.8x the flush time period. This will ensure that multiple ingesters started at the same time do not flush at the same time. Flushing at the same time can cause concurrently writing the same chunk to object storage, which in AWS S3 leads to being rate limited. reset pipeline caches when tailing rather than making a new pipeline (#9949)
Recent query optimizations made pipeline creation more expensive with the assumption that it occurred relatively infrequently. {cluster="prod", team="B", component="foo"}
{cluster="dev", team="A", component="foo"}
{cluster="dev", team="B", component="foo"}
```
- requesting `{cluster="prod"}` returns one result for all streams
containing `{cluster="prod"}`
- requesting `{cluster=~".+"}` returns two results for the streams
containing `{cluster="prod"}` and `{cluster="dev"}`
- requesting `{cluster=~".+", team=".+"}` returns four results for the
streams containing:
```
{cluster="prod", team="A"}
{cluster="prod", team="B"}
{cluster="dev", team="A"}
{cluster="dev", team="B"}
```
Label Volume Endpoint (#9588)
For a given set of matchers, returns the top N associated label/value
pairs by volume. A query for `{cluster=prod}` will return
```
cluster=prod: size (total logs matching this matcher)
.
.
.
nth-label=nth-value
```
This is to service use cases where users want to understand where their
log volume has come from by label without making multiple requests to
the stats endpoint.
Note: This PR is a monster but it's mostly plumbing. I've pointed out
the most interesting bits that actually get the volumes from
ingesters/indexs
Add span events for index stats and result cache (#9552)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
This PR adds events to the traces to have some extra observability for
how we compute the index stats. We also add some trace events to the
results cache.
Count unflushed chunks in instance stats (#9479)
The instance wasn't counting unflushed chunks in the stats. This change checks that the chunk's `flushed time` is 0 which means it hasn't been flushed yet. |
Distributor: Add org_id to log error (#9475)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Add `org_id` to push error when the error is "max active streams limit exceeded". Apparently all other push errors correctly report the `org_id`, but not this one. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: N/A |
Ingester: Avoid repeating `streamName` on error message (#9419)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Modify how our ingesters build the final error message to not append the streamName for every single entry. All entries are already part of the same stream, so repeating it is unnecessary. |
