Use a line-buffered logger to deamplify write syscalls (#6954)
We initialise a global logger in `pkg/util/log/log.go` and use it extensively throughout the Loki codebase. Every time we write a log message, a `write` syscall is invoked. Syscalls are problematic because they transition the process from userspace to kernelspace, which means: - a context-switch is incurred, which is inherently expensive ([1-2 microseconds](https://eli.thegreenplace.net/2018/measuring-context-switching-and-memory-overheads-for-linux-threads/)) - the goroutine executing the code is **blocked** - the underlying OS thread (_M_ in the go scheduler model) is **also blocked** - the goroutine has to be rescheduled once the syscall exits - the go scheduler may need to spawn additional OS threads if all are blocked in syscalls - which can also be expensive This change introduces the use of a line-buffered logger. It has a buffer of [256](https://gist.github.com/dannykopping/0704db32c0b08751d1d2494efaa734c2) entries, and once that buffer is filled it will flush to disk. However, a situation will arise in which that buffer remains somewhat empty for a period of time, so there is a periodic flush mechanism, configured to flush every 100ms. There is also a preallocated bytes slice of 10MB which is reused, to avoid excessive slice resizing & garbage collection. This does mean that we could lose up to 256 log messages in case of an ungraceful termination of the process, but this would need to be precisely timed within the 100ms flushes - in other words, the likelihood is low, and generally we shouldn't `kill -9` any Loki process. |

Bugfix include cache generations on querier response (#7300)
We check the cache number (incremented by deletes) after executing a query with the value returned by the queriers which executed it. If they’re different, we know we can’t safely cache. However, we’re never actually returning a number from the queriers. This means that as soon as this cache number is incremented by a delete, it’ll disable the results cache for that tenant completely. I suspect this has been a latent bug since we forked cortex (goes back to missing some code from this [PR](https://github.com/cortexproject/cortex/pull/2279) into cortex from @sandeepsukhani back in the day!). It just showed itself once we started using deletes. |

Fix typo in flags definitions (#7257)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: As all flags defined for `TSDBShipperConfig` are already prefixed by a dot, suffixing tsdb with one makes it redundant. Signed-off-by: Wilfried Roset <wilfriedroset@users.noreply.github.com> |

Loki: Improve query timeouts behavior (#7230)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Improves the different query-related timeouts behavior by fixing a bug and having better defaults. The changes are: - Fix the timeout middleware by creating a new request that will use the new WithDeadline context - `engine:timeout` was being ignored. This PR improves such scenario by using **the query timeout as a fallback** instead of the default `5min` for all cases |

chunks: decode varints directly from byte buffer; stop panicing on some corrupt inputs (#7264)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This is much faster, since we don't pay for byte-at-a-time reads from the buffer. For best performance with gzip and lz4, we still want a bufio.Reader. We don't need the pool of buffered readers now. Other compression formats have their own internal buffers so don't need extra buffering. **Checklist** - [x] Reviewed the `CONTRIBUTING.md` guide - NA Documentation added - NA Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - NA Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` (using changes from Loki: Shard streams based on desired rate (#7199)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Modify our sharding mechanism to be dictated by the desired rate and ingestion rate. Once the number of shards is calculated, the stream entries will be distributed across the shards. If the number of entries is lower than number of shards, we report a metric and use number of entries as the number of shards. |

ingester_querier: early exit queries on reaching quorum (#7172)
Currently `forGivenIngesters` and its derivatives don't allow passing down context to the work function as a result of which we are not making use of the tracking functionality provided by `replicationSet.Do` to exit early and relieve pressure on the ingesters. This change ensures that Unary rpc calls receive ctx populated by the replication set tracker to exit early on reaching quorum or max failures. The same cannot be applied to stream rpc calls given how the code is structured at the moment where we are processing the streams outside of the work func |

While mutating period configurations as a test (which should never be done in production), I realized this would preemptively error us when there were old TSDB WALs from a bucket that no longer belonged to a TSDB period (i.e. by replacing a `tsdb` index with a `boltdb-shipper` one). This PR changes this to a log line instead as we don't need to error and stop computation; it's better to return an empty overlap instead. Co-authored-by: Dylan Guedes <djmgguedes@gmail.com> |

[Bugfix] TSDB index bucket calculation (#7178)
When calculating the index buckets a chunk belongs to, we shouldn't error when a bucket falls outside the current TSDB store's periodConfig range. This can happen when a chunk is written across the bounds between a previous index type (i.e. boltdb-shipper) and a new tsdb type or vice versa. Instead of erroring when this happens, we'll now correctly return only the buckets matching the TSDB store (the other buckets are handled by their respective stores). I think we can also remove the error from this function signature, although I left it in as it's conceivably helpful in the case of a chunk range that doesn't overlap at all with the store (which shouldn't happen). allow backup store metrics registration by including backend type in labels (#7177)
The refactor [here](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/pkg/storage/store.go#L237) introduced in https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/7154 will cause a panic due to duplicate registration via the same store prefix when using a backup index store (for use during tsdb migrations). This PR adds more granularity to the label value to differentiate these and avoid the problem. |

revert stream push error response (#7160)
We've changed approaches to how we want to do per-stream rate limiting. The new approach will rely on creating an api on the ingester so the distributors can decide how streams should be sharded. As a result, the work to return rate-limited streams in the error body is no longer needed. |

refactor index storage code to index reader/writer interfaces for better monitoring (#7154)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Currently, it is hard to monitor just the index latencies since the chunks PUT code is coupled with both object storage and index writer. This PR refactors the code to have separate interfaces defined for index readers/writers. I have also added a wrapper called `monitoredReaderWriter`, which measures the latency on the index operations. **Special notes for your reviewer**: Cortex had added `PutChunksAndIndex` for DynamoDB, which would write both chunks and index in a single request when configured for storing both. I have removed the use of it since it would be too complex to support it with this refactoring. Loki, anyways does not recommend using chunks in the index store, and using a hosted object storage would be much cheaper. Also, this is not a breaking change, it might somewhat impact the performance of flushing the chunks. Co-authored-by: Owen Diehl <ow.diehl@gmail.com> |

Implement all-or-nothing stream ingestion (#7094)
Per-stream sharding will introduce automatic stream sharding on rate-limited streams. The ingester's current line-by-line behavior may result in duplicates when a partially-accepted stream is resharded and sent to other ingesters. This PR makes the ingester either rate limit the entire stream before attempting to write lines to a chunk. The PR 1. Separates validation, storage, and wal replay into their own functions 2. Implements a flag to rate limit the whole stream or not 3. Checks rate limits for the whole stream rather than line-by-line 4. Returns an error with information on the whole stream when rate limited |

**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Since we are planning to start deploying `tsdb` to critical cells, we
want to have a disaster recovery without any data loss.
This PR adds support to `tsdb` store itself to configure
`boltdb-shipper` as a backup chunk writer.
When the flag is enabled, `tsdb` store would also index chunks in
`boltdb-shipper` index store with table names set to
`<configured-tsdb-table-prefix>`+`backup_`+`<table-number>`.
This is the simplest option that I can come up with without maintaining
a lot of code and we can simply drop the support before marking `tsdb`
as production ready.
The rollback/recovery plan would just be to change the schema config to
use `boltdb-shipper` as index store with
`<configured-tsdb-table-prefix>`+`backup_` as prefix like below:
**tsdb enabled:**
```
schema_config:
configs:
- from: 2022-01-01
store: boltdb-shipper
index:
prefix: index_
- from: 2022-09-10
store: tsdb
index:
prefix: index_
```
**rollback:**
```
schema_config:
configs:
- from: 2022-01-01
store: boltdb-shipper
index:
prefix: index_
- from: 2022-09-10
store: boltdb-shipper
index:
prefix: index_backup_
```

Fix errors loading deletes after force-removing partially-completed delete (#7125)
When sharded deletes that are partially completed are force-removed, everything is removed except the shards that are currently being deleted. The shards being deleted aren't necessarily in numerical order so there's no way to know assume which shards have and haven't been deleted. The Delete store assumed it could look up requests in sequential order and returned empty requests where there were gaps in the stored data. This change takes the `sequence number` from the stored key of the delete requests it finds and uses that to look up details. |

feat(loki-canary): Add support to push logs directly to Loki. (#7063)
Add additional `push` mode to loki-canary, which pushes the logs directly to given Loki URL as it generates logs. The real function of Loki Canary is to act like a tenant and help us know the whether Loki installation is working as perceived by a real tenant. Main rationale for this additional push mode is to make canary more standalone without needing for `promtail` (or `grafana-agent`) to scrape it's logs and send to loki, with this change, Loki canary happily tests Loki behavior without needing any other dependencies. **NOTES**: 1. If you run Loki behind any proxy that has different authorization policies to READ or WRITE to Loki, then important change that canary operator need to be aware of it, now the user credentials they pass via `-user` and `-pass` to access loki endpoints need to have both `read' and `write` permissions (previously canary just query the logs where as promtail is the one pushes the logs, so just READ permissions was sufficient). 2. There will be follow up PR(s) to cleanup, particularly `reader` and `comparitor` component in terms of logging with proper logger. Rationale is to keep the changes small per PR to make it easy to review. 3. This changes were tested it in one of the internal Loki dev cell. 4. **This PR is a no-op if this new `push` flag is disabled (it's disabled by default)** Signed-off-by: Kaviraj <kavirajkanagaraj@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Danny Kopping <danny.kopping@grafana.com> |
