Christian Haudum	d8cc1cea83	chore: Make dedicated iterator package (#13273) ... Iterators of various types are widely used throughout the Loki code base. With the recent code additions of the bloom filters, a new set of utility functions for iterators emerged in `github.com/grafana/loki/v3/pkg/storage/bloom/v1`. The package defines interfaces for various common types, but also provides implementations to create and compose new iterators that implement these interfaces. This new package uses Go Generics. - However, at the current state, there are multiple iterator interfaces and implementations, which adds cognitive overhead in understanding how they work and which ones should be used. The idea is to unify them into a single iterator lib for Loki. - As a first step towards a single iterator library for the Loki code base, this PR moves the utilities from the `pkg/storage/bloom/v1` package to the `pkg/iter/v2` package. - Second, it changes the existing `EntryIterator` and `SampleIterator` iterators to "inherit" `v2.CloseIterator` in order to expose the same function names. - And lastly, naming conventions of iterator interfaces and structs are unified. Sandeep Sukhani	46fc0bed48	deletion: delete chunk overlapping multiple tables when processing oldest table that has it indexed (#11600) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: When a delete request has a line filter and/or is deleting a chunk partially, we create a new chunk from the source chunk and mark the original chunk for deletion. However, when a chunk overlaps multiple tables, we apply heuristics to retain the chunk until all the tables that have it indexed get processed since we need the original chunk to build a new one. Earlier, we used to process tables from oldest to newest, so the logic to detect if all the tables indexing a chunk are processed was done by seeing if `chunk-end-time` <= `table-end-time`. To put it in simple terms, if the chunk ends in the current table we are processing, it means this is the last table that we are processing, which has the chunk indexed. However, this does not work anymore since we changed the order of processing tables to process the newest tables first. To get it working back, I have updated the logic to `chunk-start-time` >= `table-start-time`. In simple terms, if the chunk starts in the current table we are processing, it means this is the last table we are processing, which has the chunk indexed. **Checklist** - [x] Tests updated	1 year ago

Sandeep Sukhani	c716e498ad	compactor: do not block compation when retention is taking too long (#9884) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: Currently, we perform compaction and apply retention in the same loop. Although we have a flag for not applying retention every time we perform compaction, we still see compaction getting blocked when processing some intensive delete requests(processed while applying retention). This PR separates out the compaction and retention to run in a separate loop. I have added a table-locking feature to avoid compaction and retention from processing the same tables at a time. However, compaction and retention would treat locked tables differently, as explained below: * When compaction sees a table is locked: It would skip the table and move on to the following table. However, before skipping, it would check if the table has any uncompacted files and increment the newly added counter called `loki_compactor_skipped_compacting_locked_tables_total` to track how often we are skipping compacting tables which have uncompacted files. * When retention sees a table is locked: It would wait for the lock to be released since we can't skip any tables while processing delete requests. **Special notes for your reviewer**: * The check for tables with uncompacted files looks for count > 1 because initially, we did not support per tenant index in `boltdb-shipper`, so a table can have a single compacted multi-tenant index file. In a rare case where we have a single file which was supposed to be compacted away, it is okay to have a single uncompacted file for a while. Ashwanth	a118e994d8	Remove shared_store and shared_store_key_prefix from shipper and compactor (#10840) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: #### Removes `shared_store` and `shared_store_key_prefix` from index shipper and compactor configs and their corresponding CLI flags. - `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store` - `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store` - `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix` - `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix` - `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store` - `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store.key-prefix` `shared_store` has been a confusing option allowing users to easily misconfigure Loki. Going forward `object_store` setting in the [period_config](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/configure/#period_config) (which already configured the store for chunks) will be used to configure store for the index. And the newly added `path_prefix` option under the `index` key in `period_config` will configure the path under which index tables are stored. This change enforces chunks and index files for a given period reside together in the same storage bucket. More details in the upgrade guide. --- `-compactor.delete-request-store` has to be **explicitly configured** going forward. Without setting this, loki wouldn't know which object store to use for storing delete requests. Salva Corts	52a3f16039	Flag categorize labels on streams response (#10419) ... We recently introduced support for ingesting and querying structured metadata in Loki. This adds a new dimension to Loki's labels since now we arguably have three categories of labels: _stream_, _structured metadata_, and _parsed_ labels. Depending on the origin of the labels, they should be used in LogQL expressions differently to achieve optimal performance. _stream_ labels should be added to stream matchers, _structured metadata_ labels should be used in a filter expression before any parsing expression, and _parsed_ labels should be placed after the parser expression extracting them. The Grafana UI has a hard time dealing with this same problem. Before https://github.com/grafana/grafana/pull/73955, the filtering functionality in Grafana was broken since it was not able to distinguish between _stream_ and _structured metadata_ labels. Also, as soon as a parser expression was added to the query, filters added by Grafana would be appended to the end of the query regardless of the label category. The PR above implements a workaround for this problem but needs a better API on Loki's end to mitigate all corner cases. From a UX perspective, being able to categorize labels in metric queries doesn't have any benefit yet. Having said that, supporting this for metric queries would require some minor refactoring on top of what has been implemented here. If we decide to do that, I think we should do it on a separate PR to avoid making this PR even larger. I also decided to leave out support for Tail queries to avoid making this PR even larger. Once this one gets merged, we can work to support tailing. --- **Note to reviewers** This PR is huge since we need to forward categorized all over the codebase (from parsing logs all the way to marshaling), fortunately, many of the changes come from updating tests and refactoring iterators.
