Christian Haudum	2b6bdc2a29	chore(storage): Simplify store interfaces and abstractions (pt 2) (#10454) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: * Remove preemptive interface from indexReaderWriter and make it an exported struct * Compose IngesterStore and QuerierStore The ingester and querier do not require a store that implements the full interface, but can accept stores that are a subset of the interfaces. Therefore we can make specific interfaces that are accepted by the ingester and querier constructors. * Split up ChunkFetcher interface This commit splits the ChunkFetcher interface into a ChunkFetcher and a ChunkFetcherProvider interface. This has the advantage that methods can allow accepting smaller interfaces. This commit also renames the `GetChunkRefs()` method of the ChunkFetcher interface into `GetChunks()`, because it returns a `[][]chunk.Chunk`, not a `[]chunk.ChunkRef` type. Travis Patterson	db97058a84	Series volume endpoint (#9704) ... This changes the `label_volume` endpoint to the `series_volume` endpoint. The new endpoint still returns volumes but now it does it for the requested streams defined by the selector names passed rather than individual labels. Salva Corts	c6fbff26e1	Add config to avoid caching stats for recent data (#9537) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: When we query the stats for recent data, we query both the ingesters and the index gateways for the stats. ebdb2b1800/pkg/storage/async_store.go (L112-L114) ebdb2b1800/pkg/storage/async_store.go (L126-L127) Then we merge all the responses, which means summing up all the stats ebdb2b1800/pkg/storage/async_store.go (L157-L158) ebdb2b1800/pkg/storage/stores/index/stats/stats.go (L23-L26) Because we have a replication factor of 3, this means that we will get the stats from the ingesters repeated up to 3 times, hence inflating the stats. In the stats cache, we store the stats for a given matcher set for the whole day, then we extract the stats from the cache by the factor of time from the request that is stored in the cache: 336283acad/pkg/querier/queryrange/index_stats_cache.go (L33) 336283acad/pkg/querier/queryrange/index_stats_cache.go (L40) Inflated stats for recent data will be cached, so subsequent stats extracted from the cache will be inflated regardless of the time. This PR adds a new per-tenant limit `max_stats_cache_freshness` to not cache requests with an end time that falls within Now minus this duration. Here's a scenario illustrating this. The graphs below show the bytes stats queried in the sharding middleware. We are running a log filter query that won't match any log, every 5 seconds with a length of 3h.  As can be seen, after enabling the stats cache and configuring`do_not_cache_request_within` to not cache stats for requests within 30m, the bytes stats used in the sharding middleware stopped increasing. Travis Patterson	7ff8463def	Fix query behavior in Single Binary and SSD deployments (#9476) ... To keep ingesters from calling themselves, the AsyncStore was only being used when the module was `Querier`, `Ruler`, or `Read`. This means that, for some operations, ingesters were never queries when the deployment mode was single-binary or `Backend` (where the ruler now lives). This change scopes the async store to just the querier rather than all storage access and always includes in it queriers. Because the `AsyncStore` isn't automatically instantiated, now, I've also moved `IngesterQuerier` to be a dependency to the store. That way anything that wants to make an `AsyncStore` is guaranteed to have what it needs.	3 years ago
Owen Diehl	07487cd89d	fixes bug with queryIngesterWithin logic in asyncStore ingester stats… (#8145) ... Fixes a previous mistake in the logic calculating when to skip querying ingesters in the async store Statistics method. Notably `through.After` should be `through.Before` when skipping querying ingesters as that's when there's no overlap with the `query-ingesters-within` period: ```go // OLD CODE BELOW if a.queryIngestersWithin != 0 { // don't query ingesters if the query does not overlap with queryIngestersWithin. if !through.After(model.Now().Add(-a.queryIngestersWithin)) { // <----- should be through.Before return a.Store.Stats(ctx, userID, from, through, matchers...) } } ``` I discovered the problem while debugging querier OOMs during a boltdb-shipper -> tsdb migration and ultimately found this happened under the following circumstances: * Queries over high volumes of _recent_ data wouldn't query ingesters for index metadata * Without index metadata, we only checked storage metadata * There is a delay before we ship the index to storage, meaning we don't see it if ingesters are skipped * Calculating ideal shard factors without recent data for queries that only touch recent data _dramatically_ underestimates the desired shard factor * Queries aren't split enough and get scheduled onto too few querier replicas * They oom. We had some fun examples like a single replica trying to download 419,000 chunks/query To be clear, this is still a hypothesis, but a plausible one, especially after finding the boolean logic error this PR fixes. Instead of changing this one line, I took the opportunity to refactor this into a shared utility used by our other `GetChunkRefs` method which is already tested, ensuring the logic works as expected. I also added some more logging visibility into this code so we can understand what the difference is when querying statistics from storage vs ingesters. Finally, I added a helper to prepare our `Stats` objects to be logged which is now used in a few places.	3 years ago
