Sandeep Sukhani	e625d7f1ca	otel: add support for per tenant configuration for mapping otlp data to loki format (#11143) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: In OTEL, we pick select Resource Attributes to identify the streams and store all the other attributes as Structured Metadata, as explained here. The problem however is that the list of Resource Attributes that are picked as Stream labels are hardcoded, and there is no way to drop unwanted data. This PR adds support for configuring how data is mapped from OTEL to Loki format per tenant. It also adds support for dropping unwanted data. When configured, only metadata requests with end time before `now - max_metadata_cache_freshness` are cacheable. _reason for setting the default to 24h?_ metric results cache can [extract samples for the desired time range from an extent](b6e64e1ef1/pkg/querier/queryrange/queryrangebase/results_cache.go (L78)) since the samples are associated with a timestamp. But the same is not true for metadata caching, it is not possible to extract a subset of labels/series from a cached extent. As a result, we could return inaccurate results, more that what was requested. for ex: returning results from an entire 1h extent for a 5m query Setting `max_metadata_cache_freshness` to 24h should help us avoid caching recent data. Danny Kopping	bcd03150c9	Query-frontend: customisable query splitting for queries overlapping `query_ingester_within` window (#11535) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: The config option `query_ingesters_within` defines the window during which logs _could_ be present on ingesters, and as such queriers will send queries to ingesters instead. `split_queries_by_interval` is defined to split queries into subqueries for increased parallelism. Aggressive query splitting within the `query_ingesters_within` window can result in overloading ingesters with unnecessarily large numbers of subqueries, which perversely can impact writes. `query_ingesters_within` is set to 3h by default. In Grafana Cloud Logs we set `split_queries_by_interval` as low as 15m (defaults to 1h), which would result in result in 3*60/15=12 requests. Every querier queries every ingester during this window, so that's 12 requests _per ingester per query_ which has the `query_ingesters_within` window in its time range _(i.e. a query from now to now-7d would include the `query_ingesters_within` window as well, now-3h to now-7d would not)_. However, we _do_ want to split queries so an ingester won't have to handle a query for a full `query_ingesters_within` window - this could involve a large amount of data. To account for this, this PR introduces a new option `split_ingester_queries_by_interval` on the query-frontend; this setting is disabled by default. 	2 years ago

Poyzan	599eed7c52	[bloom-compactor] remove BloomCompactorMinTableAge check (#11546) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: `BloomCompactorMinTableAge` was added with the idea that we will skip most recent index files from ingesters that are not compacted into TSDB indexes yet. The default value is an hour. This blocks bloom-compacter processing TSBD of the day, because end timestamp is always in the last 15 mins. We can either reduce it something lower than the frequency of TSDB indexes being built (< 15mins). Here I choose to remove it altogether, assuming uncompacted indexes from ingesters will not be processed as a table as there won't be a schema for that table with the [check here](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/pkg/bloomcompactor/bloomcompactor.go#L268-L272).	2 years ago

Vladyslav Diachenko	9b691904ef	BloomShipper: add cache for downloaded blocks (#11394) ... adapted embeddedcache.go to store downloaded bloom blocks on local filesystem. **What this PR does / why we need it**: This cache will be used by bloom-gateway to not download the blocks each time. In the cache we store the objects(`cachedBlock` struct) that contain: 1. `blockDirectory`: the `path` to the directory where the block was extracted 2. `activeQueriers`: thread-safe counter of active block users. This field is important because we do not want the directory to be removed while it's in use. 3. rest fields are needed for service needs When the downloadingWorker receives this entity, it increases the counter `activeQueriers` and creates blockQuerier wrapper that has `Close` function that will decrease the counter once blockQuerier is not needed anymore. When the cache entry is being removed from the cache, the cache calls the function `removeDirectoryAsync` which asynchronously removes the block's folder. This function checks every `Xms` if there are still active block queriers and once `activeQueriers` count is `0` the folder will be removed. Also, there is a timeout in this function, and once the timeout is reached, the folder will be force removed. **Special notes for your reviewer**: * If the cache is disabled, then the blocks will be downloaded each time the block is requested. * If the cache is used, the folder will be deleted by embeddedCache when it reaches memory size limit or items count limit. For example, setting this to 0.5 would allow a tenant to use half of the available queriers. This complements the existing `frontend.max-queriers-per-tenant`. Named after the scheduler's `scheduler_worker_concurrency` config. - `max_outstanding_per_tenant`: replaces the `maxTasksPerTenant` constant. Named after the frontend's `max_outstanding_per_tenant` config. - `pending_tasks_initial_capacity`: replaces the pendingTasksInitialCap constant. **Note to the reviewers:** - I think in the future `max_outstanding_per_tenant` should be configurable per-tenant. This would require refactoring the queue pkg and the frontend/scheduler, so I think it doesn't make sense it in this PR. - I moved the `Limits` struct definition to `config.go` so have all the adjustable settings in the same place.	2 years ago

As an operator, you want to control what tenant can use the filtering of chunks based on search string, because the creation of the bloom filters requires a significant amount of resources. Salva Corts	4248825ad2	Bloom-compactor Sharding (#11154) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR adds tenant and fingerprint (FP) sharding to bloom compactors. Note that the bloom-compactor doesn't yet perform any compaction, but iterates through all tables, tenants, and series checking if the compactor owns the tenant and the series (by the series FP). Actual compaction will be implemented with https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/11115. A new structure `Job` is added which will carry around all the context for a compaction job such as the tenant ID, the table name, and the series FP. The sharding strategy has two methods: - `OwnsTenant(tenant string)`: Checks if the compactor shard owns the tenant. - `OwnsJob(job Job)`: Checks (again) if the compactor owns the job's tenant. Then, it checks if the compactor owns the job's fingerprint by looking inside the tenant subring. We add a new per-tenant limit: `bloom_compactor_shard_size`. If it's 0, the tenant can use all compactors (i.e. `OwnsTenant` will always return `true`), otherwise, only `bloom_compactor_shard_size` out of the total number of compactors will own the tenant. Ashwanth	a118e994d8	Remove shared_store and shared_store_key_prefix from shipper and compactor (#10840) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: #### Removes `shared_store` and `shared_store_key_prefix` from index shipper and compactor configs and their corresponding CLI flags. - `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store` - `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store` - `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix` - `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix` - `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store` - `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store.key-prefix` `shared_store` has been a confusing option allowing users to easily misconfigure Loki. Going forward `object_store` setting in the [period_config](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/configure/#period_config) (which already configured the store for chunks) will be used to configure store for the index. And the newly added `path_prefix` option under the `index` key in `period_config` will configure the path under which index tables are stored. This change enforces chunks and index files for a given period reside together in the same storage bucket. More details in the upgrade guide. --- `-compactor.delete-request-store` has to be **explicitly configured** going forward. Without setting this, loki wouldn't know which object store to use for storing delete requests. Ed Welch	7ccec83926	Index gateway simple mode connection pool (#10783) ... **What this PR does / why we need it**: The current implementation of "simple mode" (which does not use the ring for gateway discovery) only makes a single connection at startup to a single query. This doesn't lend to the best load balancing when running with many gateways. This PR introduces the same pool we use for ring mode with a DNS based discovery mechanism. Note: outside of the scope of this PR, we create a connection pool per index schema period. Limits the maximum size of the structured metadata attached to a log line. - `max_structured_metadata_entries_count`: Default to 128. Limits the maximum number of structured metadata entries attached to a log line. We discussed adding other limits like `max_structured_metadata_label_name_length` and `max_structured_metadata_label_value_length` but discarded this idea for now.	2 years ago
Christian Haudum	ebef2fe1cd	Remove backup index writer from TSDB configuration (#10534) ... The setting `use_boltdb_shipper_as_backup` (`-tsdb.shipper.use-boltdb-shipper-as-backup`) was a remnant from the development of the TSDB storage. It was used to allow writing to both TSDB and BoltDB when TSDB was still highly experimental. Since TSDB is now stable and the recommended index type, the setting has become irrelevant and therefore was removed. The previous default value `false` is applied.
