Danny Kopping	bcd03150c9	Query-frontend: customisable query splitting for queries overlapping `query_ingester_within` window (#11535 ) What this PR does / why we need it: The config option `query_ingesters_within` defines the window during which logs _could_ be present on ingesters, and as such queriers will send queries to ingesters instead. `split_queries_by_interval` is defined to split queries into subqueries for increased parallelism. Aggressive query splitting within the `query_ingesters_within` window can result in overloading ingesters with unnecessarily large numbers of subqueries, which perversely can impact writes. `query_ingesters_within` is set to 3h by default. In Grafana Cloud Logs we set `split_queries_by_interval` as low as 15m (defaults to 1h), which would result in result in 3*60/15=12 requests. Every querier queries every ingester during this window, so that's 12 requests _per ingester per query_ which has the `query_ingesters_within` window in its time range _(i.e. a query from now to now-7d would include the `query_ingesters_within` window as well, now-3h to now-7d would not)_. However, we _do_ want to split queries so an ingester won't have to handle a query for a full `query_ingesters_within` window - this could involve a large amount of data. Karsten Jeschkies	edae9d32ea	Stop processing split queries on first error. (#11067 ) What this PR does / why we need it: The `TestMetricsTripperware` became flaky after #10688. The race condition in the splitter has been there before but the change exposed it. When an error occurs, e.g. when query would be too large, the splitter would return. However, there was a small time window when the loop could still be fed a new request. #10688 just amplified this effect because it removed the serialization of requests and responses. In addition to Karstens new protobuf formats for all the query request and responses, plus our use of just proto grpc rather than httpgrpc, we'd like refactor the proto Request interface to return time.Time for start and end instead of int64. This will allow his protobuf formats to use more `logproto` proto types. The new endpoint still returns volumes but now it does it for the requested streams defined by the selector names passed rather than individual labels. Salva Corts	d24fe3e68b	Max bytes read limit (#8670 ) What this PR does / why we need it: This PR implements two new per-tenant limits that are enforced on log and metric queries (both range and instant) when TSDB is used: - `max_query_bytes_read`: Refuse queries that would read more than the configured bytes here. Overall limit regardless of splitting/sharding. The goal is to refuse queries that would take too long. The default value of 0 disables this limit. - `max_querier_bytes_read`: Refuse queries in which any of their subqueries after splitting and sharding would read more than the configured bytes here. The goal is to avoid a querier from running a query that would load too much data in memory and can potentially get OOMed. The default value of 0 disables this limit. These new limits can be configured per tenant and per query (see https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/8727). The bytes a query would read are estimated through TSDB's index stats. Even though they are not exact, they are good enough to have a rough estimation of whether a query is too big to run or not. For more details on this refer to this discussion in the PR: https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/8670#discussion_r1124858508. Both limits are implemented in the frontend. Even though we considered implementing `max_querier_bytes_read` in the querier, this way, the limits for pre and post splitting/sharding queries are enforced close to each other on the same component. Moreover, this way we can reduce the number of index stats requests issued to the index gateways by reusing the stats gathered while sharding the query. With regard to how index stats requests are issued: - We parallelize index stats requests by splitting them into queries that span up to 24h since our indices are sharded by 24h periods. On top of that, this prevents a single index gateway from processing a single huge request like `{app=~".+"} for 30d`. - If sharding is enabled and the query is shardable, for `max_querier_bytes_read`, we re-use the stats requests issued by the sharding ware. Specifically, we look at the [bytesPerShard][1] to enforce this limit. Note that once we merge this PR and enable these limits, the load of index stats requests will increase substantially and we may discover bottlenecks in our index gateways and TSDB. After speaking with @owen-d, we think it should be fine as, if needed, we can scale up our index gateways and support caching index stats requests. Sandeep Sukhani	e9c93cd0f5	consider range and offset in queries while looking for schema config for query sharding (#7880 ) What this PR does / why we need it: We disable query sharding when a query touches multiple schema configs since they might have different sharding factors and might handle sharding differently. This check was done purely on the start and end time of the query without considering `range` and `offset`, which would change the length of the actual data being queried. Besides being incorrect, it also causes us to fail queries when migrating between tsdb and non-tsdb stores since both handle query sharding differently. For e.g., if the prev schema is `boltdb-shipper` and starting today, `tsdb` index is being used, so if we do a query `sum(rate({foo="bar"}[24h])` even with start and end within `tsdb` range, we will fail the query with error `incompatible index shard` if dynamic sharding goes with shard factor other than `32`(default shard factor in ingester for inverted index). The reason being the `range` here is `24h` which causes us to process data from previous schema as well. I was able to reproduce this error via a test that calculates `WeightedParallelism` with a start that's after the end. Owen Diehl	22089415e8	Split parallelism across Period Configs (#7769 ) One of things we watch while updating non-TSDB period configs to TSDB period configs is the difference in query parallelism. TSDB dynamically shards queries into (potentially) much smaller units of work compared to the static shard factors uses prior. To account for this, we use much higher query parallelism configurations with TSDB period configs. This creates a potential problem when querying across `non-tsdb, tsdb` period boundaries: we may want a query parallelism of 512 for the tsdb portion but only 64 for the non-tsdb portion! However, we only had one limit to specify this per tenant, meaning this would be too high when querying non-tsdb periods or too low when querying tsdb ones. This PR * Introduces `tsdb_max_query_parallelism` (default `512`) to `limits_config` * Uses `tsdb_max_query_parallelism` and `max_query_parallelism` limits to find a better parallelism _per query_ by weighting the two respective configs by the proportion of each query spent on TSDB or non-TSDB period configurations. Sandeep Sukhani	7f298ff72f	avoid using bloomfilters for chunks in stats calls by avoiding duplicates (#7209 ) What this PR does / why we need it: Avoid using bloomfilters for chunks deduplication in tsdb `Stats` calls by avoiding fetching duplicate entries. The idea is to split and align queries by [ObjectStorageIndexRequiredPeriod](`61794710a7/pkg/storage/config/schema_config.go (L47)`) and make each split process chunks with a start time >= start time of the table interval. In other terms, table interval that contains start time of the chunk, owns it. For e.g. if the table interval is 10s, and we have chunks 5-7, 8-12, 11-13. Query with range 6-15 would be split into 6-10, 10-15. query1 would process chunks 5-7, 8-12 and query2 would process chunks 11-13. This check is not applied for the first split so that we do not eliminate any chunks that overlaps the original query intervals but starts at the previous table. For e.g. if the table interval is 10s, and we have chunks 5-7, 8-13, 14-13. Query with range 11-12 should process chunk 8-13 even though its start time <= start time of table we will query for index. The caveat here is that we will overestimate the data we will be processing if the index is not compacted yet since it could have duplicate chunks when RF > 1. I think it is okay since the Stats call is just an estimation and need not be accurate. (#5626 ) What this PR does / why we need it: This changes adds support for the the following limits in multi-tenant queries: - `MaxQuerySeries` - `QuerySplitDuration` - `MaxEntriesLimitPerQuery` - `MinShardingLookback` - `MaxQueryLength` - `MaxQueryParallelism` - `MaxQueriersPerUser` - `MaxCacheFreshness` It always uses the more restricted limit. That means the smallest `MaxQuerySeries` but biggest `QuerySplitDuration`. The split duration is special. Zero means disabled. Also, the global default resolver is the multi tenant resolver when multi-tenant queries are enabled. This will result HTTP 400 errors in case the user sends multiple tenants to endpoints that do not support it.
