Christian Haudum	e858779e6b	Fix bug in cache of the index object client (#10587 ) The bug could manifest in missing results when querying logs older than what is kept on ingesters. This commit changes the behaviour of the caching in the storage client client used by the indexshipper to download indexes from object store. The object store client maintains an internal, in-memory cache of tables (= per-day index directories) available on object storage to reduce the amount of expensive List operations. This cache gets updated in a regular interval (1m) by the table manager that uses the client. However, when the per-tenant setting `query_ready_index_num_days` is set the 0, which is the default (to disable index pre-fetching), the sync is only performed once on startup, but not subsequently. This leads to a stale list of table names in the cache and any new index directory added to the object storage is not added to the client cache. This commit changes the object client to use a read-through caching strategy for listing tables. If a table is not found locally in cache, it performs a lookup against object storage. In this way, the cache is updated even without the regular sync described above. Therefore we can make specific interfaces that are accepted by the ingester and querier constructors. * Split up ChunkFetcher interface This commit splits the ChunkFetcher interface into a ChunkFetcher and a ChunkFetcherProvider interface. This has the advantage that methods can allow accepting smaller interfaces. This commit also renames the `GetChunkRefs()` method of the ChunkFetcher interface into `GetChunks()`, because it returns a `[][]chunk.Chunk`, not a `[]chunk.ChunkRef` type. Christian Haudum	ebef2fe1cd	Remove backup index writer from TSDB configuration (#10534 ) The setting `use_boltdb_shipper_as_backup` (`-tsdb.shipper.use-boltdb-shipper-as-backup`) was a remnant from the development of the TSDB storage. It was used to allow writing to both TSDB and BoltDB when TSDB was still highly experimental. Since TSDB is now stable and the recommended index type, the setting has become irrelevant and therefore was removed. The previous default value `false` is applied. With https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/9694, we started enforcing this requirement, and that broke some users. In this PR we are reverting this type of assertion and adding a bunch of tests to avoid the regression in the future. Travis Patterson	cc1b0dbc24	Don't use unsafe string for label names in the UnpackParser (#10487 ) We've had [some reports](https://github.com/grafana/loki/issues/8936) that `unpack` is mangling label names. We're using `unsafeGetString` to generate these so, when the underlying byte slice changes, the label name is also changed. This change incurs an alloc to make sure the generated string wont change when the underlying bytes do. fixes #8936	3 years ago

In an incident today we saw that ingesters' push latencies were increased sharply by an expensive regex query which was starving other goroutines of time on CPU. This new alert `loki_distributor_ingester_append_timeouts_total` will give us a high-signal metric which we can use for alerting.	3 years ago

Additionally, it modifies the signature and implementation of `pkg/util/log/log.go`'s `InitLogger` as follows: - previous signature ``` InitLogger(server.Config, prometheus.Registerer, bool, bool) ``` has been replaced with ``` InitLogger(server.Config, prometheus.Registerer, bool, bool) log.Logger ``` Namely, the new `InitLogger` initialises the global logger and returns it. - the new implementation initializes the global logger, but it does not override the default logger for the server. This is now done by the callers of `InitLogger`. Previously, it was done inside `InitLogger` for convenience, since the types of the 2 loggers were not the same. Shantanu Alsi	586b9042c6	Upgrade Thanos objstore, dskit and other modules (#10366 ) What this PR does / why we need it: Upgrades various common modules including dskit, thanos objstore, prometheus, etc. Fixes errors/ changes resulting due to module upgrades. This is required in order to eventually upgrade BEL dependency in GEL to point to master. Ashwanth	18482c67d6	compactor: deprecate -boltdb.shipper.compactor. prefix in favor of -compactor. (#10344 ) What this PR does / why we need it: Compactor config use `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.` as prefix which is misleading as the config options apply to tsdb index as well. Kaviraj Kanagaraj	c030217e1b	Revert "LogQL: Introduce `distinct` (#8662 )" (#10356 ) What this PR does / why we need it: This reverts commit `38b298c3fe`. We are removing this PR #8662 because [known issue tracked here](https://github.com/grafana/loki/issues/9594) and some issues we facing internally with query splitting and sharding work(hard to parallelize, merging two `distinct` sets can have duplicates, hard to make it work with metric queries, etc). We decided best to remove it before make it to public release.
