Add series population to tokenizer (#11070)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
I started to use tokenizer module for bloom creation and populating the
SBF without the series with chunk ref is weird, as we populate only half
of a data structure.
I modified it to populate entire `SeriesWithBloom` as it has all the
information.

Stop using global logger in modules (#11051)

Instrument querier inflight requests. (#11085)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: #10858 removed the HTTP and gRPC server from the querier workers. That means inflight requests are not instrumented anymore. This change adds a middleware that does that. This will add metrics such as ``` # HELP cortex_inflight_requests Current number of inflight requests. # TYPE cortex_inflight_requests gauge cortex_inflight_requests{method="gRPC",route="*logproto.IndexStatsRequest"} 0 cortex_inflight_requests{method="gRPC",route="*queryrange.LabelRequest"} 0 cortex_inflight_requests{method="gRPC",route="*queryrange.LokiRequest"} 0 cortex_inflight_requests{method="gRPC",route="*queryrange.LokiSeriesRequest"} 0 ``` **Checklist** - [ ] Reviewed the [`CONTRIBUTING.md`](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) guide (**required**) - [ ] Documentation added - [ ] Tests updated - [ ] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [ ] If the change is worth mentioning in the release notes, add `add-to-release-notes` label - [ ] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/setup/upgrade/_index.md` - [ ] For Helm chart changes bump the Helm chart version in `production/helm/loki/Chart.yaml` and update `production/helm/loki/CHANGELOG.md` and `production/helm/loki/README.md`. Remove shared_store and shared_store_key_prefix from shipper and compactor (#10840)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
#### Removes `shared_store` and `shared_store_key_prefix` from index
shipper and compactor configs and their corresponding CLI flags.
- `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store`
- `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store`
- `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix`
- `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix`
- `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store`
- `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store.key-prefix`
`shared_store` has been a confusing option allowing users to easily
misconfigure Loki.
Going forward `object_store` setting in the
[period_config](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/configure/#period_config)
(which already configured the store for chunks) will be used to
configure store for the index.
And the newly added `path_prefix` option under the `index` key in
`period_config` will configure the path under which index tables are
stored.
This change enforces chunks and index files for a given period reside
together in the same storage bucket. More details in the upgrade guide.
---
`-compactor.delete-request-store` has to be **explicitly configured**
going forward. Without setting this, loki wouldn't know which object
store to use for storing delete requests. Path prefix for storing
deletes is decided by `-compactor.delete-request-store.key-prefix` which
defaults to `index/`.

Deprecated/Deleted Config Checker tool (#10977)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR adds a new _deprecated/deleted config checker_ tool to allow users upgrading from previous Loki versions to check their Loki config and runtime config for deprecated and deleted options, as well as providing them with alternatives and reasons why those configs were deprecated/deleted. Mimir provides a [tool][1] that allows users to migrate their old configs to new ones. Having that is our future goal but the new tool in this PR is a good middle ground for the short-mid term. We also update the checklist in the PR template to ask contributors to update the tool source of truth if the contributor is deprecating or deleting a config. Here's an example for how to use the tool: ```bash go run tools/deprecated-config-checker/main.go \ -config.file tools/deprecated-config-checker/test-fixtures/config.yaml \ -runtime-config.file tools/deprecated-config-checker/test-fixtures/runtime-config.yaml ``` And this is an example output: ### Notes I think I've gone through all the deprecated and deleted configs. I cannot find the config pointed by the deprecated `ruler.storage`. It states ``` ruler: ... # Deprecated: Use -ruler-storage. CLI flags and their respective YAML config # options instead. storage: ... ``` I couldn't find that `-ruler-storage` cli flag nor the YAML definition. Add basic structure of bloom compactor (#10748)
This pull request adds the basic structure for the new bloom compactor component. - Adds new `bloom-compactor` target that runs with with multiple instances joined by a ring - Adds boilerplate functions to index blooms and compact blocks The main goal of this PR is to provide a basic functionality on which future smaller PRs can build upon. Since the code path is completely separate in a new component, it is not used anywhere at the moment. |

chore(deps): update module golang.org/x/net to v0.17.0 [security] (main) (#10831)
[](https://renovatebot.com) This PR contains the following updates: | Package | Type | Update | Change | |---|---|---|---| | golang.org/x/net | indirect | minor | `v0.7.0` -> `v0.17.0` | | golang.org/x/net | indirect | minor | `v0.8.0` -> `v0.17.0` | ### GitHub Vulnerability Alerts #### [CVE-2023-3978](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-3978) Text nodes not in the HTML namespace are incorrectly literally rendered, causing text which should be escaped to not be. This could lead to an XSS attack. #### [CVE-2023-39325](https://togithub.com/golang/go/issues/63417) A malicious HTTP/2 client which rapidly creates requests and immediately resets them can cause excessive server resource consumption. While the total number of requests is bounded by the http2.Server.MaxConcurrentStreams setting, resetting an in-progress request allows the attacker to create a new request while the existing one is still executing. With the fix applied, HTTP/2 servers now bound the number of simultaneously executing handler goroutines to the stream concurrency limit (MaxConcurrentStreams). New requests arriving when at the limit (which can only happen after the client has reset an existing, in-flight request) will be queued until a handler exits. If the request queue grows too large, the server will terminate the connection. This issue is also fixed in golang.org/x/net/http2 for users manually configuring HTTP/2. The default stream concurrency limit is 250 streams (requests) per HTTP/2 connection. This value may be adjusted using the golang.org/x/net/http2 package; see the Server.MaxConcurrentStreams setting and the ConfigureServer function. #### [CVE-2023-44487](https://togithub.com/apple/swift-nio-http2/security/advisories/GHSA-qppj-fm5r-hxr3) swift-nio-http2 is vulnerable to a denial-of-service vulnerability in which a malicious client can create and then reset a large number of HTTP/2 streams in a short period of time. This causes swift-nio-http2 to commit to a large amount of expensive work which it then throws away, including creating entirely new `Channel`s to serve the traffic. This can easily overwhelm an `EventLoop` and prevent it from making forward progress. swift-nio-http2 1.28 contains a remediation for this issue that applies reset counter using a sliding window. Add support for EventBridge s3 events in lambda-promtail (#10449)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Lambda promtail supports s3 events, which are used for scraping several
log sources such as ALB access logs. This works by configuring at the S3
bucket level "s3 event notification", that are configured to target the
lambda deployment of lambda-promtail.
However, if one is configuring this through CloudFormation, there's a
known issue with AWS that doesn't allow to configure both the lambda,
the bucket, and the notifications in the same stack. See [this
issue](https://github.com/aws-cloudformation/cloudformation-coverage-roadmap/issues/79)
for details.
For that, AWS introduced EventBridge notifications, which can be used to
ship s3 events to a lambda deployment as well. This flow looks like:
s3 -> eventbridge bus -> eventbridge rule -> lambda
EventBridge has it's own message structure for s3 notifications. This PR
adds a translation layer, just for `Object created` events (since they
are the only ones we should take into account), so that EventBridge
events can be received, and trigger the lambda as if they were from s3.

Lambda Promtail: Add logs:PutSubscriptionFilter to Lambda Promtail role (#10426)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
I ran into the below error during the CloudFormation stack creation when

config](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/tools/lambda-promtail/template.yaml):
`"Could not execute the lambda function. Make sure you have given

The issue is that the config does not give the
`logs:PutSubscriptionFilter` permission to the Lambda Promtail Role.
This adds that permission to fix the error

Remove unnecessary code after dskit log.Interface has been dereleased (#10434)
This PR removes unnecessary code used to convert the dereleased `dslog.Interface` (see https://github.com/grafana/dskit/pull/359) into `go-kit.Logger`. Additionally, it modifies the signature and implementation of `pkg/util/log/log.go`'s `InitLogger` as follows: - previous signature ``` InitLogger(*server.Config, prometheus.Registerer, bool, bool) ``` has been replaced with ``` InitLogger(*server.Config, prometheus.Registerer, bool, bool) log.Logger ``` Namely, the new `InitLogger` initialises the global logger and returns it. - the new implementation initializes the global logger, but it does not override the default logger for the server. This is now done by the callers of `InitLogger`. Previously, it was done inside `InitLogger` for convenience, since the types of the 2 loggers were not the same. Pin `chunk` and `index` format to `schema` version. (#10213)
We pin all three `Chunk`, `HeadBlock` and `TSDB` Version to `schema` version in period config. This is the following mapping (after being discussed with @owen-d and @sandeepsukhani ) `v12` (current existing schema) - ChunkFormatV3 (UnorderedHeadBlock) + TSDBv2 `v13` (introducing new schema) - ChunkFormatV4 (UnorderedWithNonIndexedLabelsHeadBlockFmt) + TSDBv3 Note the new schema `v13` supports the latest chunk and index format. **NOTES for Reviewer** 1. General approach is we removed the idea of `index.LiveFormat`, `chunkenc.DefaultChunkFormat` and `chunkenc.DefaultHeadBlockFmt` and made following two changes. These variables were used before to tie chunk and tsdb formats specific to Loki versions. This PR remove that coupling and pin these formats to `schema` version instead. 1. These variables were replaced with explicit chunk and index formats within those packages (and it's tests) 2. If these variables were used outside it's own packages say by ingester, compactor, etc. Then we extract correct chunk and index versions from the `schema` config. 2. Add two methods to `periodConfig`. (1) `ChunkFormat()` returning chunk and head format tied to schema (2) `TSDBFormat()` returning tsdb format tied to schema. 2. Other ideas I thought of doing but didn't end up doing is make `ChunkFormat` and `IndexFormat` as separate type (rather than `byte` and `int` currently. Similar to `HeadBlockFmt` type). But didnt' do it eventually to keep the PR small and don't want to complicate with lots of changes. 4. Moved couple of test cases from `chunkenc` to `config` package, because the test case was actually testing methods on `schemaconfig` and it was creating cycling dependencies. --------- Signed-off-by: Kaviraj <kavirajkanagaraj@gmail.com> |

Upgrade dskit to use packages migrated from weaveworks/common (#10164)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
This PR upgrades dskit and replaces use of packages from
weaveworks/common with their migrated equivalents in dskit. See
https://github.com/grafana/dskit/pull/342 for more details.
Note that Loki still uses some packages from weaveworks/common that I
haven't migrated (`aws` and `test`) - I'll migrate these separately.
If this PR needs to be rebuilt, I used `rewrite.sh`
([source](https://gist.github.com/charleskorn/48efe62a09d6d70f3de30327003df5c5#file-rewrite-sh))
to generate most of these changes.

lambda-promtail: Support AWS Organization CloudTrail (#10147)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
The S3 object key for Organization CloudTrail events includes the org's
ID at the beginning. Currently, trying to ingest Organization CloudTrail
events with lambda-promtail fails due to the object key not matching the
regex. This PR adds support for both matching and parsing out that org
ID.
**Which issue(s) this PR fixes**:
Fixes #<issue number>
**Special notes for your reviewer**:
- instead of adding a new regex I just amended the existing regex just
to avoid too heavy of a refactor
- I also threw in error logging on the handler because that was
_invaluable_ debugging why lambda-promtail wasn't working in our
environment. I figure others might get some benefit from it.

Introduces cache to TSDB postings (#9621)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Introduces a new interface for fetching TSDB postings and implements a cached TSDB postings. The new postings interface is named `PostingsReader` and contains two implementations: a simple one, which is identical to the former Postings behavior, and a new one, that caches postings using the existing `index_queries_cache_config`. By default, the simple/former implementation is used. The new cached implementation can be configured in the following way: ```yaml storage_config: tsdb_shipper: cache_postings: true ``` In the future, we'll remove the `cache_postings` flag and change the behavior to cache postings by default. |

lambda-promtail: fix/refactor SQS integration in Terraform module (#9909)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Currently, the Terraform module for lambda-promtail is not working due
to a misnamed reference:
```
╷
│ Error: Reference to undeclared resource
│
│ on .terraform/modules/lambda_promtail/tools/lambda-promtail/sqs.tf line 66, in resource "aws_iam_role_policy_attachment" "lambda_sqs_execution":
│ 66: role = aws_iam_role.iam_for_lambda.name
│
│ A managed resource "aws_iam_role" "iam_for_lambda" has not been declared in
│ module.lambda_promtail.
╵
```
It looks like this was the result of a conflict with #8231 and #8750.
While I was in there I also refactored the SQS work to be more
consistent with #8750.
I also made the queue name prefix configurable with the
`sqs_queue_name_prefix` variable, as it was hardcoded before which could
cause issues if multiple instances of this module are initialized in the
same AWS account and region.

Lambda Promtail - Add functions to ungzip incoming data from Cross-Account AWS Kinesis/CloudWatch (#10077)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
When using Lambda Promtail to receive logs via Kinesis that have come
from a CloudWatch Logs Subscription Filter in another account, the data
is gzipped. This PR add a check for gzipped content and if detected
unzips and sends to Loki.

lambda-promtail: Support SNS events (#9964)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Some use cases (such as S3 bucket notifications) are better suited for
SNS rather than SQS when you need to send events to multiple
destinations. Adding a little bit of extra parsing logic for SNS events
allows directly connecting an SNS topic to the Lambda Promtail function
and bypasses the extra complexity of the SQS queue. This lower
complexity is very helpful in cross-AWS-account use cases like
CloudTrail event forwarding.
**Which issue(s) this PR fixes**:
Fixes #<issue number>
**Special notes for your reviewer**:
- I just updated the SQS section of the docs to also reference SNS,
since the functionality is basically identical. Happy to take
suggestions on improvements there. Not sure if `CHANGELOG.md` needs to
be updated as well or not.
- This is semi-difficult to unit test since there isn't an existing test
harness for event matching. Testing in situ on our own infrastructure
seems to work.
