promtail: Handle nil error on target Details() call (#7771)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR addresses issue [#6930](https://github.com/grafana/loki/issues/6930). Promtail should not panic when the Details() method is called for a target that has no errors. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes #6930 |

Remove hardwired '127.0.0.1' values in default addresses (#7784)
While running all-in-one Loki instance, it's not possible to listen on anything other than IPv4 since compactor_address is then set to http://127.0.0.1. This enables listening on only IPv6. Also if frontend_address, scheduler_ring and scheduler_address is not set, the default value is to connect to '127.0.0.1:<grpc_listen_port>'. Which means that grpc_listen_address is ignored. **What this PR does / why we need it**: It's not possible to use compactor while using an all-in-one instance and listening to IPv6. Let's not ignore grpc_listen_address to not confuse users. **Special notes for your reviewer**: As noted in the first commit, the default behavior is changed from defaulting to `127.0.0.1` to `localhost`. Not sure how major that change is though. My /etc/hosts says ``` $ grep localhost /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost ``` Signed-off-by: Josef Johansson <josef@oderland.se> |

Docs - Move PR's in CHANGELOG.md that weren't actually implemented in 2.7.x (#7690)
Fixes the changelog. - PR #7462 and #7461 were **not** included in the 2.7.x release (they were submitted right after the cutoff and did not get backported) and accidentally ended up in the 2.7.x changelog. Moved them up to Main/Unreleased. - Moved #7602 to enhancements section of Promtail |

Promtail: Add tenant label to client drop metrics and logs (#7593)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Provides better visibility for per-tenant drops/retries in Promtail **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes #7570 **Special notes for your reviewer**: Does anything depend on these metrics only having 1 label that this change would break? I decided against a reason label due to cardinality concerns given how widely promtail is often deployed. **Checklist** - [x] Reviewed the `CONTRIBUTING.md` guide - [x] Documentation added - [x] Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [x] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` |

Loki: Fix multitenant querying (#7708)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: We recently broke multitenant querying because of recent changes to how timeouts working across Loki. This PR fixes this by: - Adapt the timeout wrapper to work with multitenant queries. It will take the shortest timeout across all given tenants - Adapt the query engine timeout assigning to work with multitenant queries. It will take the shortest timeout between all the tenants - Adapt query sharding to use smallest max query parallelism across given tenants - Add a functional test to ensure multitenant is behaving as expected Signed-off-by: DylanGuedes <djmgguedes@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Mehmet Burak Devecí <mhmtbrkdvc@gmail.com> **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: https://github.com/grafana/loki/issues/7696 **Special notes for your reviewer**: The regression was probably introduced by https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/7555 |

fix bugs in processing delete requests with line filters and add proper tests (#7720)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: It fixes the following issues: * Whole chunks being deleted with a line filter were skipped. * Chunks partially covered by delete requests with a line filter were not properly processed. The part that **was not covered** by the delete request was rewritten with a line filter, while the part that **was covered** by the delete request was completely deleted. The issue went unnoticed because it seems we continue to do query time filtering of data even after the delete requests are processed. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes #7590 **Special notes for your reviewer**: If multiple delete requests with a line filter touch the same chunk, then I am considering just the first request that marks it for deletion to keep this PR simple. I have left a to-do to see if we can make it work efficiently. **Checklist** - [x] Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated |

Promtail: Exclude event message (#7462)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Windows Event Logs have an Event Message field that is intended for human eyes, and often contains data that already present in the event data XML. Omitting this field the same way we can already omit `user_data` and `event_data` can easily save a lot of bytes of data per event - Event ID 4264 alone has ~2KB of just text that is already present in `event_data`. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes #7395 **Special notes for your reviewer**: I also took the liberty to improve upon the existing test '`Test_renderEntries` by using unique values for each field rather than 10's everywhere. I expect this to conflict with my other PR, #7461. |

Promtail: Add go build tag promtail_journal_enabled (#7587)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR introduces the new go build tag `promtail_journal_enabled`. This tag is passed to go build if the environment variable `PROMTAIL_JOURNAL_ENABLED=true` is present. It is useful for users with Linux OS and CGO enabled. Currently, if the user has Linux and CGO enabled he has to install `libsystemd-dev` library (`sudo apt install -y libsystemd-dev`) even when he doesn't need journald support. |

Now all log queries will be handled by the LogFilterTripperware which will result in them being split by time (they previously were not) Signed-off-by: Edward Welch <edward.welch@grafana.com> **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: We've found that very large timeframe `limited` queries will be sent to queriers and then ingesters and can stall out the read path because of the large time ranges. Splitting these by time avoids this problem by keeping any subquery limited in length to the `split_by_interval`. It's important to note that this will likely increase some extra work done by limited queries as more work for these will be parallelized and can result in extra data being processed. This will be the same as how filter queries are handled now, so it will be no worse than that. In fact this was an optimization based on the premise that it's advantageous not to split/shard limited queries but we are seeing this not be the case when limited queries are run over very large time ranges matching streams with huge volumes and combined with parsers like `| json` **Special notes for your reviewer**: **Checklist** - [ ] Reviewed the `CONTRIBUTING.md` guide - [ ] Documentation added - [x] Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [ ] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` Signed-off-by: Edward Welch <edward.welch@grafana.com> |

Promtail: Add basic tracing support (#7414)
We've been using Promtail's HTTP/gRPC server-based targets with real workloads for some weeks now. The server that these spin out is based on [weaveworks commons](https://github.com/weaveworks/common) HTTP/gRPC servers. These include by default some middlewares that if enabled, inject tracing support. We found this useful when tracking down request handling time, or even more, if the caller also support Jaeger tracing support, cross-correlated requests between the upstream server and Promtail's. This PR adds support for enabling tracing the same way Loki does. At the moment, this will just generate traces for the before-mentioned targets. In the future, the quality and completeness of tracing support can grow organically to enrich spans. |

Promtail: Add handler timeout for GCP Logs Push target (#7401)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: After been running the GCP Logs Push target in actual workloads, we've noticed that GCP sends a lot of traffic, and adjusts that send rate according to the rate at which the receiver can process. To perform that adjustment, GCP considers as a NACK [non 2xx HTTP responses](https://cloud.google.com/pubsub/docs/push#receive_push). This PR adds a target handler timeout (that includes as well the `api.Entry` channel send) to allow the user to configure this maximum processing time, therefore giving GCP notice that the sending rate is too high. This new timeout is optional, and disabled by default. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Related to https://github.com/grafana/cloud-onboarding/issues/2067 **Special notes for your reviewer**: **Checklist** - [ ] Reviewed the `CONTRIBUTING.md` guide - [x] Documentation added - [x] Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [x] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` |

chunks: decode varints directly from byte buffer; stop panicing on some corrupt inputs (#7264)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This is much faster, since we don't pay for byte-at-a-time reads from the buffer. For best performance with gzip and lz4, we still want a bufio.Reader. We don't need the pool of buffered readers now. Other compression formats have their own internal buffers so don't need extra buffering. **Checklist** - [x] Reviewed the `CONTRIBUTING.md` guide - NA Documentation added - NA Tests updated - [x] Promtail: Add compressed files support (#6708)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Adds to Promtail the ability to read compressed files. It works by: 1. Infer which compression format to use based on the file extension 2. Uncompress the file with the native `golang/compress` packages 3. Iterate over uncompressed lines and send them to Loki Its usage is the same as our current file tailing. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes #5956 Co-authored-by: Danny Kopping <dannykopping@gmail.com> |

[loki] Azure auth using Service Principal (#7179)
This PR adds the ability to use Service Principal credentials to authenticate through Azure OAuth. It might be needed when we want to access Azure Blob storage from another tenant. Previously we could use only StorageAccount key that can not be used cross-tenant. |

feat(loki-canary): Add support to push logs directly to Loki. (#7063)
Add additional `push` mode to loki-canary, which pushes the logs directly to given Loki URL as it generates logs. The real function of Loki Canary is to act like a tenant and help us know the whether Loki installation is working as perceived by a real tenant. Main rationale for this additional push mode is to make canary more standalone without needing for `promtail` (or `grafana-agent`) to scrape it's logs and send to loki, with this change, Loki canary happily tests Loki behavior without needing any other dependencies. **NOTES**: 1. If you run Loki behind any proxy that has different authorization policies to READ or WRITE to Loki, then important change that canary operator need to be aware of it, now the user credentials they pass via `-user` and `-pass` to access loki endpoints need to have both `read' and `write` permissions (previously canary just query the logs where as promtail is the one pushes the logs, so just READ permissions was sufficient). 2. There will be follow up PR(s) to cleanup, particularly `reader` and `comparitor` component in terms of logging with proper logger. Rationale is to keep the changes small per PR to make it easy to review. 3. This changes were tested it in one of the internal Loki dev cell. 4. **This PR is a no-op if this new `push` flag is disabled (it's disabled by default)** Signed-off-by: Kaviraj <kavirajkanagaraj@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Danny Kopping <danny.kopping@grafana.com> |
