This uses DNS discovery to resolve a list of addresses uses as buckets for the jumphash algorithm to shard GroupedChunkRefs across bloom gateway servers. The ring component is still part of the bloom gateway, but it is not used any more. Danny Kopping	bcd03150c9	Query-frontend: customisable query splitting for queries overlapping `query_ingester_within` window (#11535 ) What this PR does / why we need it: The config option `query_ingesters_within` defines the window during which logs _could_ be present on ingesters, and as such queriers will send queries to ingesters instead. `split_queries_by_interval` is defined to split queries into subqueries for increased parallelism. Aggressive query splitting within the `query_ingesters_within` window can result in overloading ingesters with unnecessarily large numbers of subqueries, which perversely can impact writes. `query_ingesters_within` is set to 3h by default. In Grafana Cloud Logs we set `split_queries_by_interval` as low as 15m (defaults to 1h), which would result in result in 3*60/15=12 requests. Every querier queries every ingester during this window, so that's 12 requests _per ingester per query_ which has the `query_ingesters_within` window in its time range _(i.e. a query from now to now-7d would include the `query_ingesters_within` window as well, now-3h to now-7d would not)_. However, we _do_ want to split queries so an ingester won't have to handle a query for a full `query_ingesters_within` window - this could involve a large amount of data. When we query the cache for a key, we get back a list of extents and these need no cover the entire (split) range of the cache key. Since Loki is not using the fast key check for a map we can use the slice decoding. This change also allows us to decode the JSON directly into the right protobuf struct. Danny Kopping	e523809216	bug(volume): return 400 error for invalid volume request (#11313 ) What this PR does / why we need it: Making a request to the `/volume{,_range}` endpoints results in a 500 is a LogQL expression is given instead of the expected label matchers. The reason for this is that the error is not wrapped in such a way as to be interpreted by `ClientHTTPStatusAndError` correctly. 5xx responses from the querier are automatically retried, so any invalid request currently results in 5 retries which are unnecessary. Salva Corts	4248825ad2	Bloom-compactor Sharding (#11154 ) What this PR does / why we need it: This PR adds tenant and fingerprint (FP) sharding to bloom compactors. Note that the bloom-compactor doesn't yet perform any compaction, but iterates through all tables, tenants, and series checking if the compactor owns the tenant and the series (by the series FP). Actual compaction will be implemented with https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/11115. A new structure `Job` is added which will carry around all the context for a compaction job such as the tenant ID, the table name, and the series FP. The sharding strategy has two methods: - `OwnsTenant(tenant string)`: Checks if the compactor shard owns the tenant. - `OwnsJob(job Job)`: Checks (again) if the compactor owns the job's tenant. If it's 0, the tenant can use all compactors (i.e. `OwnsTenant` will always return `true`), otherwise, only `bloom_compactor_shard_size` out of the total number of compactors will own the tenant. Salva Corts	52a3f16039	Flag categorize labels on streams response (#10419 ) We recently introduced support for ingesting and querying structured metadata in Loki. This adds a new dimension to Loki's labels since now we arguably have three categories of labels: _stream_, _structured metadata_, and _parsed_ labels. Depending on the origin of the labels, they should be used in LogQL expressions differently to achieve optimal performance. _stream_ labels should be added to stream matchers, _structured metadata_ labels should be used in a filter expression before any parsing expression, and _parsed_ labels should be placed after the parser expression extracting them. The Grafana UI has a hard time dealing with this same problem. Before https://github.com/grafana/grafana/pull/73955, the filtering functionality in Grafana was broken since it was not able to distinguish between _stream_ and _structured metadata_ labels. Also, as soon as a parser expression was added to the query, filters added by Grafana would be appended to the end of the query regardless of the label category. The PR above implements a workaround for this problem but needs a better API on Loki's end to mitigate all corner cases. Christian Haudum	27411cff08	Introduce worker queue in bloom gateway (#10976 ) Instead of calling the bloom store directly on each and every request to filter chunk refs based on the given filters, we want to queue requests in per-tenant queues and process batches of requests that can be multiplexed to avoid excessive seeking in the bloom block queriers when checking chunk matches. This PR re-uses the request queue implementation used in the query scheduler. To do so, it moves the queue related code from the scheduler into a separate package `pkg/queue` and renames occurrences of "querier" to "consumer" to be more generic. The bloom gateway instantiates the request queue when starting the service. The gRPC method `FilterChunkRefs` then enqueues incoming requests to that queue. Ed Welch	7ccec83926	Index gateway simple mode connection pool (#10783 ) What this PR does / why we need it: The current implementation of "simple mode" (which does not use the ring for gateway discovery) only makes a single connection at startup to a single query. This doesn't lend to the best load balancing when running with many gateways. This PR introduces the same pool we use for ring mode with a DNS based discovery mechanism. Note: outside of the scope of this PR, we create a connection pool per index schema period. This isn't really a problem but I think it would be better to revisit this some day to only have a single connection pool per querier. Each "block" consists of two files: 1) `Index`. This is a list of individually compressed pages of stream+chunk information sorted in ascending fingerprint order. Each series lists both the chunks indexed in the bloom filters as well as the relevant offsets for said series in the bloom file. 2) `Blooms`. This is a list of individually compressed pages of bloom filters for each series, again sorted in ascending fingerprint order.
