It seems potentially useful to label our shared libraries with version
information, now that a facility exists for retrieving that. This
patch labels them with the PG_VERSION string. There was some
discussion about using semantic versioning conventions, but that
doesn't seem terribly helpful for modules with no SQL-level presence;
and for those that do have SQL objects, we typically expect them
to support multiple revisions of the SQL definitions, so it'd still
not be very helpful.
I did not label any of src/test/modules/. It seems unnecessary since
we don't install those, and besides there ought to be someplace that
still provides test coverage for the original PG_MODULE_MAGIC macro.

When using the BSD UUID functions, contrib/uuid-ossp expects
uuid_create() to produce a version-1 UUID. FreeBSD still does so,
but in recent NetBSD releases that function produces a version-4
(random) UUID instead. That's not acceptable for our purposes:
if the user wanted v4 she would have asked for v4, not v1.
Hence, check the version digit and complain if it's not '1'.
Also drop the documentation's claim that the NetBSD implementation
is usable. It might be, depending on which OS version you're using,
but we're not going to get into that kind of detail.
(Maybe someday we should ditch all these external libraries
and just write our own UUID code, but today is not that day.)

The existing cryptohash facility was causing problems in some code paths
related to MD5 (frontend and backend) that relied on the fact that the
only type of error that could happen would be an OOM, as the MD5
implementation used in PostgreSQL ~13 (the in-core implementation is
used when compiling with or without OpenSSL in those older versions),
could fail only under this circumstance.
The new cryptohash facilities can fail for reasons other than OOMs, like
attempting MD5 when FIPS is enabled (upstream OpenSSL allows that up to
1.0.2, Fedora and Photon patch OpenSSL 1.1.1 to allow that), so this
would cause incorrect reports to show up.
This commit extends the cryptohash APIs so as callers of those routines
can fetch more context when an error happens, by using a new routine
called pg_cryptohash_error(). The error states are stored within each
implementation's internal context data, so as it is possible to extend
the logic depending on what's suited for an implementation. The default
implementation requires few error states, but OpenSSL could report
various issues depending on its internal state so more is needed in
cryptohash_openssl.c, and the code is shaped so as we are always able to
grab the necessary information.
The core code is changed to adapt to the new error routine, painting
more "const" across the call stack where the static errors are stored,
particularly in authentication code paths on variables that provide
log details. This way, any future changes would warn if attempting to
free these strings. The MD5 authentication code was also a bit blurry
about the handling of "logdetail" (LOG sent to the postmaster), so
improve the comments related that, while on it.
The origin of the problem is 87ae969, that introduced the centralized
cryptohash facility. Extra changes are done for pgcrypto in v14 for the
non-OpenSSL code path to cope with the improvements done by this
commit.

With its current design, a careless use of pg_cryptohash_final() could
would result in an out-of-bound write in memory as the size of the
destination buffer to store the result digest is not known to the
cryptohash internals, without the caller knowing about that. This
commit adds a new argument to pg_cryptohash_final() to allow such sanity
checks, and implements such defenses.
The internals of SCRAM for HMAC could be tightened a bit more, but as
everything is based on SCRAM_KEY_LEN with uses particular to this code
there is no need to complicate its interface more than necessary, and
this comes back to the refactoring of HMAC in core. Except that, this
minimizes the uses of the existing DIGEST_LENGTH variables, relying
instead on sizeof() for the result sizes. In ossp-uuid, this also makes
the code more defensive, as it already relied on dce_uuid_t being at
least the size of a MD5 digest.
This is in philosophy similar to cfc40d3 for base64.c and aef8948 for
hex.c.

With this commit, SHA1 goes through the implementation provided by
OpenSSL via EVP when building the backend with it, and uses as fallback
implementation KAME which was located in pgcrypto and already shaped for
an integration with a set of init, update and final routines.
Structures and routines have been renamed to make things consistent with
the fallback implementations of MD5 and SHA2.
uuid-ossp has used for ages a shortcut with pgcrypto to fetch a copy of
SHA1 if needed. This was built depending on the build options within
./configure, so this cleans up some code and removes the build
dependency between pgcrypto and uuid-ossp.
Note that this will help with the refactoring of HMAC, as pgcrypto
offers the option to use MD5, SHA1 or SHA2, so only the second option
was missing to make that possible.

This adjusts some code related to recent changes for cryptohash
functions:
- Add a variable in md5.h to track down the size of a computed result,
moved from pgcrypto. Note that pg_md5_hash() assumed a result of this
size already.
- Call explicit_bzero() on the hashed data when freeing the context for
fallback implementations. For MD5, particularly, it would be annoying
to leave some non-zeroed data around.
- Clean up some code related to recent changes of uuid-ossp. .gitignore
still included md5.c and a comment was incorrect.

This module had a dependency on pgcrypto's md5.c that got removed by
b67b57a. Instead of the code from pgcrypto, this code can just use the
new cryptohash routines for MD5 as a drop-in replacement, so let's just
do this switch. This has also the merit to simplify a bit the
compilation of uuid-ossp.
This requires --with-uuid to be reproduced, and I have used e2fs as a
way to reproduce the failure, then test this commit.

All postgres internal usages are replaced, it's just libpq example
usages that haven't been converted. External users of libpq can't
generally rely on including postgres internal headers.
Note that this includes replacing open-coded byte swapping of 64bit
integers (using two 32 bit swaps) with a single 64bit swap.
Where it looked applicable, I have removed netinet/in.h and
arpa/inet.h usage, which previously provided the relevant
functionality. It's perfectly possible that I missed other reasons for
including those, the buildfarm will tell.

Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments
to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments
following #endif to not obey the general rule.
Commit e3860ffa4d wasn't actually using
the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that
tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of
code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be
moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's
code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops
in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working
in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the
net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed
one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves
more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such
cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after
the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after.
Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same
as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else.
That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage
from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent.
This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak.
The main changes visible in this commit are:
* Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations.
* No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts,
sizeof, or offsetof.
* No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as
well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers.
* Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely.
* Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed
with no space separating them from the code.
* Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels.
* Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less
than the expected column 33.
On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef
names that are not listed in typedefs.list. This might encourage us to
put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in
indent itself.
There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment
indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses. I wanted
to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without
one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the
changes as much as practical.

This makes almost all core code follow the policy introduced in the
previous commit. Specific decisions:
- Text search support functions with char* and length arguments, such as
prsstart and lexize, may receive unaligned strings. I doubt
maintainers of non-core text search code will notice.
- Use plain VARDATA() on values detoasted or synthesized earlier in the
same function. Use VARDATA_ANY() on varlenas sourced outside the
function, even if they happen to always have four-byte headers. As an
exception, retain the universal practice of using VARDATA() on return
values of SendFunctionCall().
- Retain PG_GETARG_BYTEA_P() in pageinspect. (Page images are too large
for a one-byte header, so this misses no optimization.) Sites that do
not call get_page_from_raw() typically need the four-byte alignment.
- For now, do not change btree_gist. Its use of four-byte headers in
memory is partly entangled with storage of 4-byte headers inside
GBT_VARKEY, on disk.
- For now, do not change gtrgm_consistent() or gtrgm_distance(). They
incorporate the varlena header into a cache, and there are multiple
credible implementation strategies to consider.
Before commit b8cc8f947, it was possible to build contrib/uuid-ossp without
having told configure you meant to; you could just cd into that directory
and "make". That no longer works because the code depends on configure to
have done header and library probes, but the ensuing error messages are
not so easy to interpret if you're not an old C hand. We've gotten a
couple of complaints recently from people trying to do this the low-tech
way, so add an explicit #error directing the user to use --with-uuid.
(In principle we might want to do something similar in the other
optionally-built contrib modules; but I don't think any of the others have
ever worked without preconfiguration, so there are no bad habits to break
people of.)

Oversight in commit b8cc8f947. I just noticed this causes compiler
warnings on FreeBSD, and it really ought to cause warnings elsewhere too:
all references I can find say that <arpa/inet.h> is required for these.
We have a lot of code elsewhere that thinks that both <netinet/in.h>
and <arpa/inet.h> should be included for these functions, so do it that
way here too, even though <arpa/inet.h> ought to be sufficient according
to the references I consulted.

The original coding in contrib/uuid-ossp created and destroyed a uuid_t
object (or, in some cases, even two of them) each time it was called.
This is not the intended usage: you're supposed to keep the uuid_t object
around so that the library can cache its state across uses. (Other UUID
libraries seem to keep equivalent state behind-the-scenes in static
variables, but OSSP chose differently.) Aside from being quite inefficient,
creating a new uuid_t loses knowledge of the previously generated UUID,
which in theory could result in duplicate V1-style UUIDs being created
on sufficiently fast machines.
On at least some platforms, creating a new uuid_t also draws some entropy
from /dev/urandom, leaving less for the rest of the system. This seems
sufficiently unpleasant to justify back-patching this change.
The V5 (SHA1 hashing) code wrote 20 bytes into a 16-byte local variable.
This had accidentally failed to fail in my testing and Matteo's, but
buildfarm results exposed the problem.
Allow the contrib/uuid-ossp extension to be built atop any one of these
three popular UUID libraries. (The extension's name is now arguably a
misnomer, but we'll keep it the same so as not to cause unnecessary
compatibility issues for users.)
We would not normally consider a change like this post-beta1, but the issue
has been forced by our upgrade to autoconf 2.69, whose more rigorous header
checks are causing OSSP's header files to be rejected on some platforms.
It's been foreseen for some time that we'd have to move away from depending
on OSSP UUID due to lack of upstream maintenance, so this is a down payment
on that problem.
While at it, add some simple regression tests, in hopes of catching any
major incompatibilities between the three implementations.

Because of gcc -Wmissing-prototypes, all functions in dynamically
loadable modules must have a separate prototype declaration. This is
meant to detect global functions that are not declared in header files,
but in cases where the function is called via dfmgr, this is redundant.
Besides filling up space with boilerplate, this is a frequent source of
compiler warnings in extension modules.
We can fix that by creating the function prototype as part of the
PG_FUNCTION_INFO_V1 macro, which such modules have to use anyway. That
makes the code of modules cleaner, because there is one less place where
the entry points have to be listed, and creates an additional check that
functions have the right prototype.
Remove now redundant prototypes from contrib and other modules.
strings. This patch introduces four support functions cstring_to_text,
cstring_to_text_with_len, text_to_cstring, and text_to_cstring_buffer, and
two macros CStringGetTextDatum and TextDatumGetCString. A number of
existing macros that provided variants on these themes were removed.
Most of the places that need to make such conversions now require just one
function or macro call, in place of the multiple notational layers that used
to be needed. There are no longer any direct calls of textout or textin,
and we got most of the places that were using handmade conversions via
memcpy (there may be a few still lurking, though).
This commit doesn't make any serious effort to eliminate transient memory
leaks caused by detoasting toasted text objects before they reach
text_to_cstring. We changed PG_GETARG_TEXT_P to PG_GETARG_TEXT_PP in a few
places where it was easy, but much more could be done.
