Tom Lane	d1e027221d	Replace the pg_listener-based LISTEN/NOTIFY mechanism with an in-memory queue. In addition, add support for a "payload" string to be passed along with each notify event. This implementation should be significantly more efficient than the old one, and is also more compatible with Hot Standby usage. There is not yet any facility for HS slaves to receive notifications generated on the master, although such a thing is possible in future. Tom Lane	2487d872e0	Create a multiplexing structure for signals to Postgres child processes. This patch gets us out from under the Unix limitation of two user-defined signal types. We already had done something similar for signals directed to the postmaster process; this adds multiplexing for signals directed to backends and auxiliary processes (so long as they're connected to shared memory). As proof of concept, replace the former usage of SIGUSR1 and SIGUSR2 for backends with use of the multiplexing mechanism. There are still some hard-wired definitions of SIGUSR1 and SIGUSR2 for other process types, but getting rid of those doesn't seem interesting at the moment. Fujii Masao	17 years ago

Neil Conway	d13e903bea	RESET SESSION, plus related new DDL commands. Patch from Marko Kreen, reviewed by Neil Conway. This patch adds the following DDL command variants: RESET SESSION, RESET TEMP, RESET PLANS, CLOSE ALL, and DEALLOCATE ALL. RESET SESSION is intended for use by connection pool software and the like, in order to reset a client session to something close to its initial state. Note that while most of these command variants can be executed inside a transaction block (but are not transaction-aware!), RESET SESSION cannot. While this is inconsistent, it is intended to catch programmer mistakes: RESET SESSION in an open transaction block is probably unintended.	19 years ago

Tom Lane	ebfc56d3fb	Handle impending sinval queue overflow by means of a separate signal (SIGUSR1, which we have not been using recently) instead of piggybacking on SIGUSR2-driven NOTIFY processing. This has several good results: the processing needed to drain the sinval queue is a lot less than the processing needed to answer a NOTIFY; there's less contention since we don't have a bunch of backends all trying to acquire exclusive lock on pg_listener; backends that are sitting inside a transaction block can still drain the queue, whereas NOTIFY processing can't run if there's an open transaction block. (This last is a fairly serious issue that I don't think we ever recognized before --- with clients like JDBC that tend to sit with open transaction blocks, the sinval queue draining mechanism never really worked as intended, probably resulting in a lot of useless cache-reset overhead.) This is the last of several proposed changes in response to Philip Warner's recent report of sinval-induced performance problems.	22 years ago

Peter Eisentraut	6a68f42648	The heralded `Grand Unified Configuration scheme' (GUC) That means you can now set your options in either or all of $PGDATA/configuration, some postmaster option (--enable-fsync=off), or set a SET command. The list of options is in backend/utils/misc/guc.c, documentation will be written post haste. pg_options is gone, so is that pq_geqo config file. Also removed were backend -K, -Q, and -T options (no longer applicable, although -d0 does the same as -Q). Added to configure an --enable-syslog option. changed all callers from TPRINTF to elog(DEBUG)	26 years ago

I'm able to get through a 'make' of the backend with no errors except the occasional 'might not be initialized error', which is nothing major, just annoying. Have a few patches from D'Arcy to incorporate, but am waiting until I can get a clean compile first, which I'm hoping to have before bed, or sometime tomorrow.	30 years ago
