There's never any value in giving a fully specified cache key to
SearchCatCacheList: you might as well call SearchCatCache instead,
since there could be only one match. So the maximum useful number of
key arguments is one less than the supported number of key columns.
We might as well remove the useless extra argument and save some few
bytes per call site, as well as a cycle or so per call.
I believe the reason it was coded like this is that originally, callers
had to write out all the dummy arguments in each call, and so it seemed
less confusing if SearchCatCache and SearchCatCacheList took the same
number of key arguments. But since commit e26c539e9, callers only write
their live arguments explicitly, making that a non-factor; and there's
surely been enough time for third-party modules to adapt to that coding
style. So this is only an ABI break not an API break for callers.
Per discussion with Oliver Ford, this might also make it less confusing
how to use SearchCatCacheList correctly.

The following are the individual improvements:
1) Avoidance of FunctionCallInfo based function calls, replaced by
more efficient functions with a native C argument interface.
2) Don't extract columns from a cache entry's tuple whenever matching
entries - instead store them as a Datum array. This also allows to
get rid of having to build dummy tuples for negative & list
entries, and of a hack for dealing with cstring vs. text weirdness.
3) Reorder members of catcache.h struct, so imortant entries are more
likely to be on one cacheline.
4) Allowing the compiler to specialize critical SearchCatCache for a
specific number of attributes allows to unroll loops and avoid
other nkeys dependant initialization.
5) Only initializing the ScanKey when necessary, i.e. catcache misses,
greatly reduces cache unnecessary cpu cache misses.
6) Split of the cache-miss case from the hash lookup, reducing stack
allocations etc in the common case.
7) CatCTup and their corresponding heaptuple are allocated in one
piece.
This results in making cache lookups themselves roughly three times as
fast - full-system benchmarks obviously improve less than that.
I've also evaluated further techniques:
- replace open coded hash with simplehash - the list walk right now
shows up in profiles. Unfortunately it's not easy to do so safely as
an entry's memory location can change at various times, which
doesn't work well with the refcounting and cache invalidation.
- Cacheline-aligning CatCTup entries - helps some with performance,
but the win isn't big and the code for it is ugly, because the
tuples have to be freed as well.
- add more proper functions, rather than macros for
SearchSysCacheCopyN etc., but right now they don't show up in
profiles.
The reason the macro wrapper for syscache.c/h have to be changed,
rather than just catcache, is that doing otherwise would require
exposing the SysCache array to the outside. That might be a good idea
anyway, but it's for another day.

The sole useful effect of this function, to check that no catcache
entries have positive refcounts at transaction end, has really been
obsolete since we introduced ResourceOwners in PG 8.1. We reduced the
checks to assertions years ago, so that the function was a complete
no-op in production builds. There have been previous discussions about
removing it entirely, but consensus up to now was that it had some small
value as a cross-check for bugs in the ResourceOwner logic.
However, it now emerges that it's possible to trigger these assertions
if you hit an assert-enabled backend with SIGTERM during a call to
SearchCatCacheList, because that function temporarily increases the
refcounts of entries it's intending to add to a catcache list construct.
In a normal ERROR scenario, the extra refcounts are cleaned up by
SearchCatCacheList's PG_CATCH block; but in a FATAL exit we do a
transaction abort and exit without ever executing PG_CATCH handlers.
There's a case to be made that this is a generic hazard and we should
consider restructuring elog(FATAL) handling so that pending PG_CATCH
handlers do get run. That's pretty scary though: it could easily create
more problems than it solves. Preliminary stress testing by Andreas
Seltenreich suggests that there are not many live problems of this ilk,
so we rejected that idea.
There are more-localized ways to fix the problem; the most principled
one would be to use PG_ENSURE_ERROR_CLEANUP instead of plain PG_TRY.
But adding cycles to SearchCatCacheList isn't very appealing. We could
also weaken the assertions in AtEOXact_CatCache in some more or less
ad-hoc way, but that just makes its raison d'etre even less compelling.
In the end, the most reasonable solution seems to be to just remove
AtEOXact_CatCache altogether, on the grounds that it's not worth trying
to fix it. It hasn't found any bugs for us in many years.

Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments
to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments
following #endif to not obey the general rule.
Commit e3860ffa4d wasn't actually using
the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that
tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of
code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be
moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's
code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops
in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working
in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the
net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed
one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves
more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such
cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after
the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after.
Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same
as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else.
That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage
from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent.
This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

A test case provided by Mathieu Fenniak shows that the initial search for
the target catcache in CatalogCacheIdInvalidate consumes a very significant
amount of overhead in cases where cache invalidation is triggered but has
little useful work to do. There is no good reason for that search to exist
at all, as the index array maintained by syscache.c allows direct lookup of
the catcache from its ID. We just need a frontend function in syscache.c,
matching the division of labor for most other cache-accessing operations.
While there's more that can be done in this area, this patch alone reduces
the runtime of Mathieu's example by 2X. We can hope that it offers some
useful benefit in other cases too, although usually cache invalidation
overhead is not such a striking fraction of the total runtime.
Back-patch to 9.4 where logical decoding was introduced. It might be
worth going further back, but presently the only case we know of where
cache invalidation is really a significant burden is in logical decoding.
Also, older branches have fewer catcaches, reducing the possible benefit.
(Note: although this nominally changes catcache's API, we have always
documented CatalogCacheIdInvalidate as a private function, so I would
have little sympathy for an external module calling it directly. So
backpatching should be fine.)

Somebody failed to grasp the point of having the #ifdef CATCACHE_STATS
fields at the end of the struct. Put that back the way it should be,
and add a comment making it more explicit why it should be that way.
Replace some bogus "x[1]" declarations with "x[FLEXIBLE_ARRAY_MEMBER]".
Aside from being more self-documenting, this should help prevent bogus
warnings from static code analyzers and perhaps compiler misoptimizations.
This patch is just a down payment on eliminating the whole problem, but
it gets rid of a lot of easy-to-fix cases.
Note that the main problem with doing this is that one must no longer rely
on computing sizeof(the containing struct), since the result would be
compiler-dependent. Instead use offsetof(struct, lastfield). Autoconf
also warns against spelling that offsetof(struct, lastfield[0]).

If the hash table backing a catalog cache becomes too full (fillfactor > 2),
enlarge it. A new buckets array, double the size of the old, is allocated,
and all entries in the old hash are moved to the right bucket in the new
hash.
This has two benefits. First, cache lookups don't get so expensive when
there are lots of entries in a cache, like if you access hundreds of
thousands of tables. Second, we can make the (initial) sizes of the caches
much smaller, which saves memory.
This patch dials down the initial sizes of the catcaches. The new sizes are
chosen so that a backend that only runs a few basic queries still won't need
to enlarge any of them.
dlist_delete, dlist_insert_after, dlist_insert_before, slist_insert_after
do not need access to the list header, and indeed insisting on that negates
one of the main advantages of a doubly-linked list.
In consequence, revert addition of "cache_bucket" field to CatCTup.
Provide a common implementation of embedded singly-linked and
doubly-linked lists. "Embedded" in the sense that the nodes'
next/previous pointers exist within some larger struct; this design
choice reduces memory allocation overhead.
Most of the implementation uses inlineable functions (where supported),
for performance.
Some existing uses of both types of lists have been converted to the new
code, for demonstration purposes. Other uses can (and probably will) be
converted in the future. Since dllist.c is unused after this conversion,
it has been removed.

Now that cache invalidation callbacks get only a hash value, and not a
tuple TID (per commits 632ae6829f and
b5282aa893), the only way they can restrict
what they invalidate is to know what the hash values mean. setrefs.c was
doing this via a hard-wired assumption but that seems pretty grotty, and
it'll only get worse as more cases come up. So let's expose a calculation
function that takes the same parameters as SearchSysCache. Per complaint
from Marko Kreen.
This requires adjusting the API for syscache callback functions: they now
get a hash value, not a TID, to identify the target tuple. Most of them
weren't paying any attention to that argument anyway, but plancache did
require a small amount of fixing.
Also, improve performance a trifle by avoiding sending duplicate inval
messages when a heap_update isn't changing the catcache lookup columns.
The purpose of this change is to eliminate the need for every caller
of SearchSysCache, SearchSysCacheCopy, SearchSysCacheExists,
GetSysCacheOid, and SearchSysCacheList to know the maximum number
of allowable keys for a syscache entry (currently 4). This will
make it far easier to increase the maximum number of keys in a
future release should we choose to do so, and it makes the code
shorter, too.

The restructuring I just finished doing on cache management exposed to me how
silly this routine was. Its function was to go into the catcache and blow
away all entries related to a given relation when there was a relcache flush
on that relation. However, there is no point in removing a catcache entry
if the catalog row it represents is still valid --- and if it isn't valid,
there must have been a catcache entry flush on it, because that's triggered
directly by heap_update or heap_delete on the catalog row. So this routine
accomplished nothing except to blow away valid cache entries that we'd very
likely be wanting in the near future to help reconstruct the relcache entry.
Dumb.
On top of which, it required a subtle and easy-to-get-wrong attribute in
syscache definitions, ie, the column containing the OID of the related
relation if any. Removing that is a very useful maintenance simplification.
of shared or nailed system catalogs. This has two key benefits:
* The new CLUSTER-based VACUUM FULL can be applied safely to all catalogs.
* We no longer have to use an unsafe reindex-in-place approach for reindexing
shared catalogs.
CLUSTER on nailed catalogs now works too, although I left it disabled on
shared catalogs because the resulting pg_index.indisclustered update would
only be visible in one database.
Since reindexing shared system catalogs is now fully transactional and
crash-safe, the former special cases in REINDEX behavior have been removed;
shared catalogs are treated the same as non-shared.
This commit does not do anything about the recently-discussed problem of
deadlocks between VACUUM FULL/CLUSTER on a system catalog and other
concurrent queries; will address that in a separate patch. As a stopgap,
parallel_schedule has been tweaked to run vacuum.sql by itself, to avoid
such failures during the regression tests.

relcache.h, heapam.h or genam.h, which are more lightweight and thus cause less
unnecessary dependencies.

SysCacheGetAttr() on a tuple originally fetched from a different syscache
(hopefully on the same catalog) than the one specified in the call. It
doesn't seem useful or robust to try to prevent that from happening, so just
improve the function to cope instead. Per bug#2678 from Jeff Trout. The
specific example shown by Jeff is new in 8.1, but to be on the safe side
I'm backpatching 8.0 as well. We could patch 7.x similarly but I think
that's probably overkill, given the lack of evidence of old bugs of this ilk.
remove the infrastructure needed to enforce the limit, ie, the global
LRU list of cache entries. On small-to-middling databases this wins
because maintaining the LRU list is a waste of time. On large databases
this wins because it's better to keep more cache entries (we assume
such users can afford to use some more per-backend memory than was
contemplated in the Berkeley-era catcache design). This provides a
noticeable improvement in the speed of psql \d on a 10000-table
database, though it doesn't make it instantaneous.
While at it, use per-catcache settings for the number of hash buckets
per catcache, rather than the former one-size-fits-all value. It's a
bit silly to be using the same number of hash buckets for, eg, pg_am
and pg_attribute. The specific values I used might need some tuning,
but they seem to be in the right ballpark based on CATCACHE_STATS
results from the standard regression tests.
comment line where output as too long, and update typedefs for /lib
directory. Also fix case where identifiers were used as variable names
in the backend, but as typedefs in ecpg (favor the backend for
indenting).
Backpatch to 8.1.X.
SearchCatCacheList and ReleaseCatCacheList. Previously, we incremented
and decremented the refcounts of list member tuples along with the list
itself, but that's unnecessary, and very expensive when the list is big.
It's cheaper to change only the list refcount. When we are considering
deleting a cache entry, we have to check not only its own refcount but
its parent list's ... but it's easy to arrange the code so that this
check is not made in any commonly-used paths, so the cost is really nil.
The bigger gain though is to refrain from DLMoveToFront'ing each individual
member tuple each time the list is referenced. To keep some semblance
of fair space management, lists are just marked as used or not since the
last cache cleanout search, and we do a MoveToFront pass only when about
to run a cleanout. In combination, these changes reduce the costs of
SearchCatCacheList and ReleaseCatCacheList from about 4.5% of pgbench
runtime to under 1%, according to my gprof results.
indexes. Replace all heap_openr and index_openr calls by heap_open
and index_open. Remove runtime lookups of catalog OID numbers in
various places. Remove relcache's support for looking up system
catalogs by name. Bulky but mostly very boring patch ...
when open references remain during normal cleanup of a resource owner.
This restores the system's ability to warn about leaks to what it was
before 8.0. Not really a user-level bug, but helpful for development.
keep track of portal-related resources separately from transaction-related
resources. This allows cursors to work in a somewhat sane fashion with
nested transactions. For now, cursor behavior is non-subtransactional,
that is a cursor's state does not roll back if you abort a subtransaction
that fetched from the cursor. We might want to change that later.
performance front, but with feature freeze upon us I think it's time to
drive a stake in the ground and say that this will be in 7.5.

Remove the 'strategy map' code, which was a large amount of mechanism
that no longer had any use except reverse-mapping from procedure OID to
strategy number. Passing the strategy number to the index AM in the
first place is simpler and faster.
This is a preliminary step in planned support for cross-datatype index
operations. I'm committing it now since the ScanKeyEntryInitialize()
API change touches quite a lot of files, and I want to commit those
changes before the tree drifts under me.
