Instead of dozens of mostly-duplicate pg_foo_ownercheck() functions,
write one common function object_ownercheck() that can handle almost
all of them. We already have all the information we need, such as
which system catalog corresponds to which catalog table and which
column is the owner column.

The standard way to check for list emptiness is to compare the
List pointer to NIL; our list code goes out of its way to ensure
that that is the only representation of an empty list. (An
acceptable alternative is a plain boolean test for non-null
pointer, but explicit mention of NIL is usually preferable.)
Various places didn't get that memo and expressed the condition
with list_length(), which might not be so bad except that there
were such a variety of ways to check it exactly: equal to zero,
less than or equal to zero, less than one, yadda yadda. In the
name of code readability, let's standardize all those spellings
as "list == NIL" or "list != NIL". (There's probably some
microscopic efficiency gain too, though few of these look to be
at all performance-critical.)
A very small number of cases were left as-is because they seemed
more consistent with other adjacent list_length tests that way.

Previously, if an extension script did CREATE OR REPLACE and there was
an existing object not belonging to the extension, it would overwrite
the object and adopt it into the extension. This is problematic, first
because the overwrite is probably unintentional, and second because we
didn't change the object's ownership. Thus a hostile user could create
an object in advance of an expected CREATE EXTENSION command, and would
then have ownership rights on an extension object, which could be
modified for trojan-horse-type attacks.
Hence, forbid CREATE OR REPLACE of an existing object unless it already
belongs to the extension. (Note that we've always forbidden replacing
an object that belongs to some other extension; only the behavior for
previously-free-standing objects changes here.)
For the same reason, also fail CREATE IF NOT EXISTS when there is
an existing object that doesn't belong to the extension.

This allows users to omit the statistics name in a CREATE STATISTICS
command, letting the system auto-generate a sensible, unique name,
putting the statistics object in the same schema as the table.

There were many calls to construct_array() and deconstruct_array() for
built-in types, for example, when dealing with system catalog columns.
These all hardcoded the type attributes necessary to pass to these
functions.
To simplify this a bit, add construct_array_builtin(),
deconstruct_array_builtin() as wrappers that centralize this hardcoded
knowledge. This simplifies many call sites and reduces the amount of
hardcoded stuff that is spread around.

The syscache lookup may return NULL even for valid OID, for example due
to a concurrent DROP STATISTICS, so a HeapTupleIsValid is necessary.
Without it, it may fail with a segfault.
Reported by Alexander Lakhin, patch by me. Backpatch to 13, where ALTER
STATISTICS ... SET STATISTICS was introduced.

Add pg_statistic_ext_data.stxdinherit flag, so that for each extended
statistics definition we can store two versions of data - one for the
relation alone, one for the whole inheritance tree. This is analogous to
pg_statistic.stainherit, but we failed to include such flag in catalogs
for extended statistics, and we had to work around it (see commits
859b3003de, 36c4bc6e72 and 20b9fa308e).
This changes the relationship between the two catalogs storing extended
statistics objects (pg_statistic_ext and pg_statistic_ext_data). Until
now, there was a simple 1:1 mapping - for each definition there was one
pg_statistic_ext_data row, and this row was inserted while creating the
statistics (and then updated during ANALYZE). With the stxdinherit flag,
we don't know how many rows there will be (child relations may be added
after the statistics object is defined), so there may be up to two rows.
We could make CREATE STATISTICS to always create both rows, but that
seems wasteful - without partitioning we only need stxdinherit=false
rows, and declaratively partitioned tables need only stxdinherit=true.
So we no longer initialize pg_statistic_ext_data in CREATE STATISTICS,
and instead make that a responsibility of ANALYZE. Which is what we do
for regular statistics too.

to system columns. So for example
CREATE STATISTICS s ON ctid FROM t;
would fail. But with extended statistics on expressions, it was possible
to work around this limitation quite easily

This is an oversight in a4d75c86bf, fixed by adding a simple check.

Until now, when defining extended statistics, everything except a plain
column reference was treated as complex expression. So for example "a"
was a column reference, but "(a)" would be an expression. In most cases
this does not matter much, but there were a couple strange consequences.
For example
CREATE STATISTICS s ON a FROM t;
would fail, because extended stats require at least two columns. But
CREATE STATISTICS s ON (a) FROM t;
would succeed, because that requirement does not apply to expressions.
Moreover, that statistics object is useless - the optimizer will always
use the regular statistics collected for attribute "a".
So do a bit more work to identify those expressions referencing a single
column, and translate them to a simple column reference. Backpatch to
14, where support for extended statistics on expressions was introduced.

Most error messages about a relkind that was not supported or
appropriate for the command was of the pattern
"relation \"%s\" is not a table, foreign table, or materialized view"
This style can become verbose and tedious to maintain. Moreover, it's
not very helpful: If I'm trying to create a comment on a TOAST table,
which is not supported, then the information that I could have created
a comment on a materialized view is pointless.
Instead, write the primary error message shorter and saying more
directly that what was attempted is not possible. Then, in the detail
message, explain that the operation is not supported for the relkind
the object was. To simplify that, add a new function
errdetail_relkind_not_supported() that does this.
In passing, make use of RELKIND_HAS_STORAGE() where appropriate,
instead of listing out the relkinds individually.

The error message was checking that the structures returned from the
parser matched expectations. That's something we usually use
assertions for, not a full user-facing error message. So replace that
with an assertion (hidden inside lfirst_node()).

Design problems were discovered in the handling of composite types and
record types that would cause some relevant versions not to be recorded.
Misgivings were also expressed about the use of the pg_depend catalog
for this purpose. We're out of time for this release so we'll revert
and try again.

Allow defining extended statistics on expressions, not just just on
simple column references. With this commit, expressions are supported
by all existing extended statistics kinds, improving the same types of
estimates. A simple example may look like this:
CREATE TABLE t (a int);
CREATE STATISTICS s ON mod(a,10), mod(a,20) FROM t;
ANALYZE t;
The collected statistics are useful e.g. to estimate queries with those
expressions in WHERE or GROUP BY clauses:
SELECT * FROM t WHERE mod(a,10) = 0 AND mod(a,20) = 0;
SELECT 1 FROM t GROUP BY mod(a,10), mod(a,20);
This introduces new internal statistics kind 'e' (expressions) which is
built automatically when the statistics object definition includes any
expressions. This represents single-expression statistics, as if there
was an expression index (but without the index maintenance overhead).
The statistics is stored in pg_statistics_ext_data as an array of
composite types, which is possible thanks to 79f6a942bd.
CREATE STATISTICS allows building statistics on a single expression, in
which case in which case it's not possible to specify statistics kinds.
A new system view pg_stats_ext_exprs can be used to display expression
statistics, similarly to pg_stats and pg_stats_ext views.
ALTER TABLE ... ALTER COLUMN ... TYPE now treats indexes the same way it
treats indexes, i.e. it drops and recreates the statistics. This means
all statistics are reset, and we no longer try to preserve at least the
functional dependencies. This should not be a major issue in practice,
as the functional dependencies actually rely on per-column statistics,
which were always reset anyway.

Add a check that CREATE STATISTICS does not add extended statistics on
system catalogs, similarly to indexes etc. It can be overriden using
the allow_system_table_mods GUC.
This bug exists since 7b504eb282, adding the extended statistics, so
backpatch all the way back to PostgreSQL 10.

They are equivalent, except that StrNCpy() zero-fills the entire
destination buffer instead of providing just one trailing zero. For
all but a tiny number of callers, that's just overhead rather than
being desirable.
Remove StrNCpy() as it is now unused.
In some cases, namestrcpy() is the more appropriate function to use.
While we're here, simplify the API of namestrcpy(): Remove the return
value, don't check for NULL input. Nothing was using that anyway.
Also, remove a few unused name-related functions.

Includes some manual cleanup of places that pgindent messed up,
most of which weren't per project style anyway.
Notably, it seems some people didn't absorb the style rules of
commit c9d297751, because there were a bunch of new occurrences
of function calls with a newline just after the left paren, all
with faulty expectations about how the rest of the call would get
indented.
Our usual practice for "poor man's enum" catalog columns is to define
macros for the possible values and use those, not literal constants,
in C code. But for some reason lost in the mists of time, this was
never done for typalign/attalign or typstorage/attstorage. It's never
too late to make it better though, so let's do that.
The reason I got interested in this right now is the need to duplicate
some uses of the TYPSTORAGE constants in an upcoming ALTER TYPE patch.
But in general, this sort of change aids greppability and readability,
so it's a good idea even without any specific motivation.
I may have missed a few places that could be converted, and it's even
more likely that pending patches will re-introduce some hard-coded
references. But that's not fatal --- there's no expectation that
we'd actually change any of these values. We can clean up stragglers
over time.

Since pluggable storage has been introduced, those two routines have
been replaced by table_open/close, with some compatibility macros still
present to allow extensions to compile correctly with v12.
Some code paths using the old routines still remained, so replace them.
Based on the discussion done, the consensus reached is that it is better
to remove those compatibility macros so as nothing new uses the old
routines, so remove also the compatibility macros.

When building statistics, we need to decide how many rows to sample and
how accurate the resulting statistics should be. Until now, it was not
possible to explicitly define statistics target for extended statistics
objects, the value was always computed from the per-attribute targets
with a fallback to the system-wide default statistics target.
That's a bit inconvenient, as it ties together the statistics target set
for per-column and extended statistics. In some cases it may be useful
to require larger sample / higher accuracy for extended statics (or the
other way around), but with this approach that's not possible.
So this commit introduces a new command, allowing to specify statistics
target for individual extended statistics objects, overriding the value
derived from per-attribute targets (and the system default).
ALTER STATISTICS stat_name SET STATISTICS target_value;
When determining statistics target for an extended statistics object we
first look at this explicitly set value. When this value is -1, we fall
back to the old formula, looking at the per-attribute targets first and
then the system default. This means the behavior is backwards compatible
with older PostgreSQL releases.

The current extended statistics code was a bit confused which collation
to use. When building the statistics, the collations defined as default
for the data types were used (since commit 5e0928005). The MCV code was
however using the column collations for MCV serialization, and then
DEFAULT_COLLATION_OID when computing estimates. So overall the code was
using all three possible options, inconsistently.
This uses the column colation everywhere - this makes it consistent with
what 5e0928005 did for regular stats. We however do not track the
collations in a catalog, because we can derive them from column-level
information. This may need to change in the future, e.g. after allowing
statistics on expressions.

Since extended statistic got introduced in PostgreSQL 10, there was a
single catalog pg_statistic_ext storing both the definitions and built
statistic. That's however problematic when a user is supposed to have
access only to the definitions, but not to user data.
Consider for example pg_dump on a database with RLS enabled - if the
pg_statistic_ext catalog respects RLS (which it should, if it contains
user data), pg_dump would not see any records and the result would not
define any extended statistics. That would be a surprising behavior.
Until now this was not a pressing issue, because the existing types of
extended statistic (functional dependencies and ndistinct coefficients)
do not include any user data directly. This changed with introduction
of MCV lists, which do include most common combinations of values.
The easiest way to fix this is to split the pg_statistic_ext catalog
into two - one for definitions, one for the built statistic values.
The new catalog is called pg_statistic_ext_data, and we're maintaining
a 1:1 relationship with the old catalog - either there are matching
records in both catalogs, or neither of them.

Project style is to check the success of SearchSysCacheN and friends
by applying HeapTupleIsValid to the result. A tiny minority of calls
creatively did it differently. Bring them into line with the rest.
This is just cosmetic, since HeapTupleIsValid is indeed just a null
check at the moment ... but that may not be true forever, and in any
case it puts a mental burden on readers who may wonder why these
call sites are not like the rest.
Back-patch to v11 just to keep the branches in sync. (The bulk of these
errors seem to have originated in v11 or v12, though a few are old.)
Per searching to see if anyplace else had made the same error
repaired in 62148c352.
Introduce a third extended statistic type, supported by the CREATE
STATISTICS command - MCV lists, a generalization of the statistic
already built and used for individual columns.
Compared to the already supported types (n-distinct coefficients and
functional dependencies), MCV lists are more complex, include column
values and allow estimation of much wider range of common clauses
(equality and inequality conditions, IS NULL, IS NOT NULL etc.).
Similarly to the other types, a new pseudo-type (pg_mcv_list) is used.

heapam.h previously was included in a number of widely used
headers (e.g. execnodes.h, indirectly in executor.h, ...). That's
problematic on its own, as heapam.h contains a lot of low-level
details that don't need to be exposed that widely, but becomes more
problematic with the upcoming introduction of pluggable table storage
- it seems inappropriate for heapam.h to be included that widely
afterwards.
heapam.h was largely only included in other headers to get the
HeapScanDesc typedef (which was defined in heapam.h, even though
HeapScanDescData is defined in relscan.h). The better solution here
seems to be to just use the underlying struct (forward declared where
necessary). Similar for BulkInsertState.
Another problem was that LockTupleMode was used in executor.h - parts
of the file tried to cope without heapam.h, but due to the fact that
it indirectly included it, several subsequent violations of that goal
were not not noticed. We could just reuse the approach of declaring
parameters as int, but it seems nicer to move LockTupleMode to
lockoptions.h - that's not a perfect location, but also doesn't seem
bad.
As a number of files relied on implicitly included heapam.h, a
significant number of files grew an explicit include. It's quite
probably that a few external projects will need to do the same.

Previously tables declared WITH OIDS, including a significant fraction
of the catalog tables, stored the oid column not as a normal column,
but as part of the tuple header.
This special column was not shown by default, which was somewhat odd,
as it's often (consider e.g. pg_class.oid) one of the more important
parts of a row. Neither pg_dump nor COPY included the contents of the
oid column by default.
The fact that the oid column was not an ordinary column necessitated a
significant amount of special case code to support oid columns. That
already was painful for the existing, but upcoming work aiming to make
table storage pluggable, would have required expanding and duplicating
that "specialness" significantly.
WITH OIDS has been deprecated since 2005 (commit ff02d0a05280e0).
Remove it.
Removing includes:
- CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE syntax for declaring the table to be
WITH OIDS has been removed (WITH (oids[ = true]) will error out)
- pg_dump does not support dumping tables declared WITH OIDS and will
issue a warning when dumping one (and ignore the oid column).
- restoring an pg_dump archive with pg_restore will warn when
restoring a table with oid contents (and ignore the oid column)
- COPY will refuse to load binary dump that includes oids.
- pg_upgrade will error out when encountering tables declared WITH
OIDS, they have to be altered to remove the oid column first.
- Functionality to access the oid of the last inserted row (like
plpgsql's RESULT_OID, spi's SPI_lastoid, ...) has been removed.
The syntax for declaring a table WITHOUT OIDS (or WITH (oids = false)
for CREATE TABLE) is still supported. While that requires a bit of
support code, it seems unnecessary to break applications / dumps that
do not use oids, and are explicit about not using them.
The biggest user of WITH OID columns was postgres' catalog. This
commit changes all 'magic' oid columns to be columns that are normally
declared and stored. To reduce unnecessary query breakage all the
newly added columns are still named 'oid', even if a table's column
naming scheme would indicate 'reloid' or such. This obviously
requires adapting a lot code, mostly replacing oid access via
HeapTupleGetOid() with access to the underlying Form_pg_*->oid column.
The bootstrap process now assigns oids for all oid columns in
genbki.pl that do not have an explicit value (starting at the largest
oid previously used), only oids assigned later by oids will be above
FirstBootstrapObjectId. As the oid column now is a normal column the
special bootstrap syntax for oids has been removed.
Oids are not automatically assigned during insertion anymore, all
backend code explicitly assigns oids with GetNewOidWithIndex(). For
the rare case that insertions into the catalog via SQL are called for
the new pg_nextoid() function can be used (which only works on catalog
tables).
The fact that oid columns on system tables are now normal columns
means that they will be included in the set of columns expanded
by * (i.e. SELECT * FROM pg_class will now include the table's oid,
previously it did not). It'd not technically be hard to hide oid
column by default, but that'd mean confusing behavior would either
have to be carried forward forever, or it'd cause breakage down the
line.
While it's not unlikely that further adjustments are needed, the
scope/invasiveness of the patch makes it worthwhile to get merge this
now. It's painful to maintain externally, too complicated to commit
after the code code freeze, and a dependency of a number of other
patches.

Apparently, it doesn't work to use a plain cstring as a Name datum: you
may end up having random bytes because of failing to zero the bytes
after the terminating \0, as indicated by valgrind. I introduced this
bug in 5564c11815, so backpatch this fix to REL_10_STABLE, like that
commit.
While at it, fix a slightly misleading comment, pointed out by David
Rowley.
The LIKE INCLUDING ALL clause to CREATE TABLE intuitively indicates
cloning of extended statistics on the source table, but it failed to do
so. Patch it up so that it does. Also include an INCLUDING STATISTICS
option to the LIKE clause, so that the behavior can be requested
individually, or excluded individually.
While at it, reorder the INCLUDING options, both in code and in docs, in
alphabetical order which makes more sense than feature-implementation
order that was previously used.
Backpatch this to Postgres 10, where extended statistics were
introduced, because this is seen as an oversight in a fresh feature
which is better to get consistent from the get-go instead of changing
only in pg11.
In pg11, comments on statistics objects are cloned too. In pg10 they
are not, because I (Álvaro) was too coward to change the parse node as
required to support it. Also, in pg10 I chose not to renumber the
parser symbols for the various INCLUDING options in LIKE, for the same
reason. Any corresponding user-visible changes (docs) are backpatched,
though.

AclObjectKind was basically just another enumeration for object types,
and we already have a preferred one for that. It's only used in
aclcheck_error. By using ObjectType instead, we can also give some more
precise error messages, for example "index" instead of "relation".

Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.
By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.
This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.
This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

In commits 2f5c9d9c9 and ab0289651 we invented an abstraction layer
to insulate catalog manipulations from direct heap update calls.
But evidently some patches that hadn't landed in-tree at that point
didn't get the memo completely. Fix a couple of direct calls to
simple_heap_delete to use CatalogTupleDelete instead; these appear
to have been added in commits 7c4f52409 and 7b504eb28. This change is
purely cosmetic ATM, but there's no point in having an abstraction layer
if we allow random code to break it.

ALTER COLUMN TYPE on a column used by a statistics object fails since
commit 928c4de30, because the relevant switch in ATExecAlterColumnType
is unprepared for columns to have dependencies from OCLASS_STATISTIC_EXT
objects.
Although the existing types of extended statistics don't actually need us
to do any work for a column type change, it seems completely indefensible
that that assumption is hidden behind the failure of an unrelated module
to contain any code for the case. Hence, create and call an API function
in statscmds.c where the assumption can be explained, and where we could
add code to deal with the problem when it inevitably becomes real.
Also, the reason this wasn't handled before, neither for extended stats
nor for the last half-dozen new OCLASS kinds :-(, is that the default:
in that switch suppresses compiler warnings, allowing people to miss the
need to consider it when adding an OCLASS. We don't really need a default
because surely getObjectClass should only return valid values of the enum;
so remove it, and add the missed OCLASS entries where they should be.

Consistently refer to such an entry as a "statistics object", not just
"statistics" or "extended statistics". Previously we had a mismash of
terms, accompanied by utter confusion as to whether the term was
singular or plural. That's not only grating (at least to the ear of
a native English speaker) but could be outright misleading, eg in error
messages that seemed to be referring to multiple objects where only one
could be meant.
This commit fixes the code and a lot of comments (though I may have
missed a few). I also renamed two new SQL functions,
pg_get_statisticsextdef -> pg_get_statisticsobjdef
pg_statistic_ext_is_visible -> pg_statistics_obj_is_visible
to conform better with this terminology.
I have not touched the SGML docs other than fixing those function
names; the docs certainly need work but it seems like a separable task.
