Michael Paquier	b41c430846	btree_gist: Merge the last two versions into version 1.8 ... During the development cycle of v18, btree_gist has been bumped once to 1.8 for the addition of translate_cmptype support functions (originally 7406ab623f, renamed in 32edf732e8). 1.9 has added sortsupport functions (e4309f73f6). There is no need for two version bumps in a module for a single major release of PostgreSQL. This commit unifies both upgrades to a single SQL script, downgrading btree_gist to 1.8. Author: Paul A. Heikki Linnakangas	e4309f73f6	Add support for sorted gist index builds to btree_gist ... This enables sortsupport in the btree_gist extension for faster builds of gist indexes. Sorted gist index build strategy is the new default now. Regression tests are unchanged (except for one small change in the 'enum' test to add coverage for enum values added later) and are using the sorted build strategy instead. One version of this was committed a long time ago already, in commit 9f984ba6d2, but it was quickly reverted because of buildfarm failures. The failures were presumably caused by some small bugs, but we never got around to debug and commit it again. This patch was written from scratch, implementing the same idea, with some fragments and ideas from the original patch. Peter Eisentraut	fc0438b4e8	Add temporal PRIMARY KEY and UNIQUE constraints ... Add WITHOUT OVERLAPS clause to PRIMARY KEY and UNIQUE constraints. These are backed by GiST indexes instead of B-tree indexes, since they are essentially exclusion constraints with = for the scalar parts of the key and && for the temporal part. (previously committed as 46a0cd4cef, reverted by 46a0cd4cefb; the new part is this:) Because 'empty' && 'empty' is false, the temporal PK/UQ constraint allowed duplicates, which is confusing to users and breaks internal expectations. For instance, when GROUP BY checks functional dependencies on the PK, it allows selecting other columns from the table, but in the presence of duplicate keys you could get the value from any of their rows. So we need to forbid empties. This all means that at the moment we can only support ranges and multiranges for temporal PK/UQs, unlike the original patch (above). Documentation and tests for this are added. But this could conceivably be extended by introducing some more general support for the notion of "empty" for other types. Author: Paul A. This is support function 12 for the GiST AM and translates "well-known" RT*StrategyNumber values into whatever strategy number is used by the opclass (since no particular numbers are actually required). We will use this to support temporal PRIMARY KEY/UNIQUE/FOREIGN KEY/FOR PORTION OF functionality. This commit adds two implementations, one for internal GiST opclasses (just an identity function) and another for btree_gist opclasses. It updates btree_gist from 1.7 to 1.8, adding the support function for all its opclasses. Andres Freund	e5555657ba	meson: Add support for building with precompiled headers ... This substantially speeds up building for windows, due to the vast amount of headers included via windows.h. A cross build from linux targetting mingw goes from 994.11user 136.43system 0:31.58elapsed 3579%CPU to 422.41user 89.05system 0:14.35elapsed 3562%CPU The wins on windows are similar-ish (but I don't have a system at hand just now for actual numbers). Targetting other operating systems the wins are far smaller (tested linux, macOS, FreeBSD). For now precompiled headers are disabled by default, it's not clear how well they work on all platforms. E.g. on FreeBSD gcc doesn't seem to have working support, but clang does. When doing a full build precompiled headers are only beneficial for targets with multiple .c files, as meson builds a separate precompiled header for each target (so that different compilation options take effect). This commit therefore only changes target with at least two .c files to use precompiled headers. Because this commit adds b_pch=false to the default_options new build directories will have precompiled headers disabled by default, however existing build directories will continue use the default value of b_pch, which is true. Note that using precompiled headers with ccache requires setting CCACHE_SLOPPINESS=pch_defines,time_macros to get hits. Andres Freund	902ab2fcef	meson: Add windows resource files ... The generated resource files aren't exactly the same ones as the old buildsystems generate. Previously "InternalName" and "OriginalFileName" were mostly wrong / not set (despite being required), but that was hard to fix in at least the make build. Additionally, the meson build falls back to a "auto-generated" description when not set, and doesn't set it in a few cases - unlikely that anybody looks at these descriptions in detail. Andres Freund	e6927270cd	meson: Add initial version of meson based build system ... Autoconf is showing its age, fewer and fewer contributors know how to wrangle it. Recursive make has a lot of hard to resolve dependency issues and slow incremental rebuilds. Our home-grown MSVC build system is hard to maintain for developers not using Windows and runs tests serially. While these and other issues could individually be addressed with incremental improvements, together they seem best addressed by moving to a more modern build system. After evaluating different build system choices, we chose to use meson, to a good degree based on the adoption by other open source projects. We decided that it's more realistic to commit a relatively early version of the new build system and mature it in tree. This commit adds an initial version of a meson based build system. It supports building postgres on at least AIX, FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris and Windows (however only gcc is supported on aix, solaris). For Windows/MSVC postgres can now be built with ninja (faster, particularly for incremental builds) and msbuild (supporting the visual studio GUI, but building slower). Several aspects (e.g. Windows rc file generation, PGXS compatibility, LLVM bitcode generation, documentation adjustments) are done in subsequent commits requiring further review. Other aspects (e.g. not installing test-only extensions) are not yet addressed. When building on Windows with msbuild, builds are slower when using a visual studio version older than 2019, because those versions do not support MultiToolTask, required by meson for intra-target parallelism. The plan is to remove the MSVC specific build system in src/tools/msvc soon after reaching feature parity. However, we're not planning to remove the autoconf/make build system in the near future. Likely we're going to keep at least the parts required for PGXS to keep working around until all supported versions build with meson.
