Noah Misch	9d7726c2ba	Recommend wrappers of PG_DETOAST_DATUM_PACKED(). When commit `3e23b68dac` introduced single-byte varlena headers, its fmgr.h changes presented PG_GETARG_TEXT_PP() and PG_GETARG_TEXT_P() as equals. Its postgres.h changes presented PG_DETOAST_DATUM_PACKED() and VARDATA_ANY() as the exceptional case. Now, instead, firmly recommend PG_GETARG_TEXT_PP() over PG_GETARG_TEXT_P(); likewise for other ...PP() macros. This shaves cycles and invites consistency of style.	9 years ago
Tom Lane	91e79260f6	Remove no-longer-required function declarations. Remove a bunch of "extern Datum foo(PG_FUNCTION_ARGS);" declarations that are no longer needed now that PG_FUNCTION_INFO_V1(foo) provides that. Some of these were evidently missed in commit `e7128e8dbb`, but others were cargo-culted in in code added since then. Possibly that can be blamed in part on the fact that we'd not fixed relevant documentation examples, which I've now done.	11 years ago

Tom Lane	234a02b2a8	Replace direct assignments to VARATT_SIZEP(x) with SET_VARSIZE(x, len). Get rid of VARATT_SIZE and VARATT_DATA, which were simply redundant with VARSIZE and VARDATA, and as a consequence almost no code was using the longer names. Rename the length fields of struct varlena and various derived structures to catch anyplace that was accessing them directly; and clean up various places so caught. In itself this patch doesn't change any behavior at all, but it is necessary infrastructure if we hope to play any games with the representation of varlena headers. Tom Lane	375369acd1	Replace TupleTableSlot convention for whole-row variables and function results with tuples as ordinary varlena Datums. This commit does not in itself do much for us, except eliminate the horrid memory leak associated with evaluation of whole-row variables. However, it lays the groundwork for allowing composite types as table columns, and perhaps some other useful features as well. Per my proposal of a few days ago.	22 years ago

Tom Lane	d08741eab5	Restructure the key include files per recent pghackers discussion: there are now separate files "postgres.h" and "postgres_fe.h", which are meant to be the primary include files for backend .c files and frontend .c files respectively. By default, only include files meant for frontend use are installed into the installation include directory. There is a new make target 'make install-all-headers' that adds the whole content of the src/include tree to the installed fileset, for use by people who want to develop server-side code without keeping the complete source tree on hand. Cleaned up a whole lot of crufty and inconsistent header inclusions.	25 years ago
Tom Lane	5bb2300b59	Revise handling of oldstyle/newstyle functions per recent discussions in pghackers list. Support for oldstyle internal functions is gone (no longer needed, since conversion is complete) and pg_language entry 'internal' now implies newstyle call convention. pg_language entry 'newC' is gone; both old and newstyle dynamically loaded C functions are now called language 'C'. A newstyle function must be identified by an associated info routine. See src/backend/utils/fmgr/README.	25 years ago
