Add various missing conversions from and to Datum. The previous code
mostly relied on implicit conversions or its own explicit casts
instead of using the correct DatumGet*() or *GetDatum() functions.
We think these omissions are harmless. Some actual bugs that were
discovered during this process have been committed
separately (80c758a2e1, fd2ab03fea).

The code used
return (Selectivity) 0.0;
where
PG_RETURN_FLOAT8(0.0);
would be correct.
On 64-bit systems, these are pretty much equivalent, but on 32-bit
systems, PG_RETURN_FLOAT8() correctly produces a pointer, but the old
wrong code would return a null pointer, possibly leading to a crash
elsewhere.
We think this code is actually not reachable because bqarr_in won't
accept an empty query, and there is no other function that will
create query_int values. But better be safe and not let such
incorrect code lie around.

Commit 0f21db36d made an assumption that GIN triConsistentFns
would not modify their input entryRes[] arrays. But in fact,
the "shim" triConsistentFn that we use for opclasses that don't
supply their own did exactly that, potentially leading to wrong
answers from a GIN index search. Through bad luck, none of the
test cases that we have for such opclasses exposed the bug.
One response to this could be that the assumption of consistency check
functions not modifying entryRes[] arrays is a bad one, but it still
seems reasonable to me. Notably, shimTriConsistentFn is itself
assuming that with respect to the underlying boolean consistentFn,
so it's sure being self-centered in supposing that it gets to do so.
Fortunately, it's quite simple to fix shimTriConsistentFn to restore
the entry-time state of entryRes[], so let's do that instead.
This issue doesn't affect any core GIN opclasses, since they all
supply their own triConsistentFns. It does affect contrib modules
btree_gin, hstore, and intarray.
Along the way, I (tgl) noticed that shimTriConsistentFn failed to
pick up on a "recheck" flag returned by its first call to the boolean
consistentFn. This may be only a latent problem, since it would be
unlikely for a consistentFn to set recheck for the all-false case
and not any other cases. (Indeed, none of our contrib modules do
that.) Nonetheless, it's formally wrong.

It seems potentially useful to label our shared libraries with version
information, now that a facility exists for retrieving that. This
patch labels them with the PG_VERSION string. There was some
discussion about using semantic versioning conventions, but that
doesn't seem terribly helpful for modules with no SQL-level presence;
and for those that do have SQL objects, we typically expect them
to support multiple revisions of the SQL definitions, so it'd still
not be very helpful.
I did not label any of src/test/modules/. It seems unnecessary since
we don't install those, and besides there ought to be someplace that
still provides test coverage for the original PG_MODULE_MAGIC macro.

There is at least one report in the field of storing millions of
integers in arrays, so it seems like a good time to specialize
intarray's qsort function. In doing so, streamline the comparators:
Previously there were three, two for each direction for sorting
and one passed to qunique_arg. To preserve the early exit in the
case of descending input, pass the direction as an argument to
the comparator. This requires giving up duplicate detection, which
previously allowed skipping the qunique_arg() call. Testing showed
no regressions this way.
In passing, get rid of nearby checks that the input has at least
two elements, since preserving them would make some macros less
readable. These are not necessary for correctness, and seem like
premature optimizations.

Commit 6b80394781 introduced integer comparison functions designed
to be as efficient as possible while avoiding overflow. This
commit makes use of these functions in many of the in-tree qsort()
comparators to help ensure transitivity. Many of these comparator
functions should also see a small performance boost.

An array element equal to INT_MAX gave this code indigestion,
causing an infinite loop that surely ended in SIGSEGV. We fixed
some nearby problems awhile ago (cf 757c5182f) but missed this.

There are a lot of Perl scripts in the tree, mostly code generation
and TAP tests. Occasionally, these scripts produce warnings. These
are probably always mistakes on the developer side (true positives).
Typical examples are warnings from genbki.pl or related when you make
a mess in the catalog files during development, or warnings from tests
when they massage a config file that looks different on different
hosts, or mistakes during merges (e.g., duplicate subroutine
definitions), or just mistakes that weren't noticed because there is a
lot of output in a verbose build.
This changes all warnings into fatal errors, by replacing
use warnings;
by
use warnings FATAL => 'all';
in all Perl files.

Yet another bug in the ilk of commits a7ee7c851 and 741b88435. In
741b88435, we took care to clear the memorized location of the
downlink when we split the parent page, because splitting the parent
page can move the downlink. But we missed that even *updating* a tuple
on the parent can move it, because updating a tuple on a gist page is
implemented as a delete+insert, so the updated tuple gets moved to the
end of the page.
This commit fixes the bug in two different ways (belt and suspenders):
1. Clear the downlink when we update a tuple on the parent page, even
if it's not split. This the same approach as in commits a7ee7c851
and 741b88435.
I also noticed that gistFindCorrectParent did not clear the
'downlinkoffnum' when it stepped to the right sibling. Fix that
too, as it seems like a clear bug even though I haven't been able
to find a test case to hit that.
2. Change gistFindCorrectParent so that it treats 'downlinkoffnum'
merely as a hint. It now always first checks if the downlink is
still at that location, and if not, it scans the page like before.
That's more robust if there are still more cases where we fail to
clear 'downlinkoffnum' that we haven't yet uncovered. With this,
it's no longer necessary to meticulously clear 'downlinkoffnum',
so this makes the previous fixes unnecessary, but I didn't revert
them because it still seems nice to clear it when we know that the
downlink has moved.
Also add the test case using the same test data that Alexander
posted. I tried to reduce it to a smaller test, and I also tried to
reproduce this with different test data, but I was not able to, so
let's just include what we have.

GiST compress functions (like all GiST opclass functions) are
supposed to be called in short-lived memory contexts, so that
minor memory leaks in them are not of concern, and indeed
explicit pfree's are likely slightly counterproductive.
But this one in g_intbig_compress() is more than
slightly counterproductive, because it's guarded by
"if (in != DatumGetArrayTypeP(entry->key))" which means
that if this test succeeds, we've detoasted the datum twice.
(And to add insult to injury, the extra detoast result is
leaked.) Let's just drop the whole stanza, relying on the
GiST temporary context mechanism to clean up in good time.
The analogous bit in g_int_compress() is
if (r != (ArrayType *) DatumGetPointer(entry->key))
pfree(r);
which doesn't have the gratuitous-detoast problem so
I left it alone. Perhaps there is a case for removing
unnecessary pfree's more widely, but I'm not sure if it's
worth the code churn.
The potential extra decompress seems expensive enough to
justify calling this a (minor) performance bug and
back-patching.

As gist__int_ops stands in intarray, it is possible to store GiST
entries for leaf pages that can cause corruptions when decompressed.
Leaf nodes are stored as decompressed all the time by the compression
method, and the decompression method should map with that, retrieving
the contents of the page without doing any decompression. However, the
code authorized the insertion of leaf page data with a higher number of
array items than what can be supported, generating a NOTICE message to
inform about this matter (199 for a 8k page, for reference). When
calling the decompression method, a decompression would be attempted on
this leaf node item but the contents should be retrieved as they are.
The NOTICE message generated when dealing with the compression of a leaf
page and too many elements in the input array for gist__int_ops has been
introduced by 08ee64e, removing the marker stored in the array to track
if this is actually a leaf node. However, it also missed the fact that
the decompression path should do nothing for a leaf page. Hence, as the
code stand, a too-large array would be stored as uncompressed but the
decompression path would attempt a decompression rather that retrieving
the contents as they are.
This leads to various problems. First, even if 08ee64e tried to address
that, it is possible to do out-of-bound chunk writes with a large input
array, with the backend informing about that with WARNINGs. On
decompression, retrieving the stored leaf data would lead to incorrect
memory reads, leading to crashes or even worse.
Perhaps somebody would be interested in expanding the number of array
items that can be handled in a leaf page for this operator in the
future, which would require revisiting the choice done in 08ee64e, but
based on the lack of reports about this problem since 2005 it does not
look so. For now, this commit prevents the insertion of data for leaf
pages when using more array items that the code can handle on
decompression, switching the NOTICE message to an ERROR. If one wishes
to use more array items, gist__intbig_ops is an optional choice.
While on it, use ERRCODE_PROGRAM_LIMIT_EXCEEDED as error code when a
limit is reached, because that's what the module is facing in such
cases.

Run pgindent, pgperltidy, and reformat-dat-files.
This set of diffs is a bit larger than typical. We've updated to
pg_bsd_indent 2.1.2, which properly indents variable declarations that
have multi-line initialization expressions (the continuation lines are
now indented one tab stop). We've also updated to perltidy version
20230309 and changed some of its settings, which reduces its desire to
add whitespace to lines to make assignments etc. line up. Going
forward, that should make for fewer random-seeming changes to existing
code.

pg_input_error_info() is now a SQL function able to return a row with
more than just the error message generated for incorrect data type
inputs when these are able to handle soft failures, returning more
contents of ErrorData, as of:
- The error message (same as before).
- The error detail, if set.
- The error hint, if set.
- SQL error code.
All the regression tests that relied on pg_input_error_message() are
updated to reflect the effects of the rename.

We chose a specific wording of the not-implemented errors for
pseudotype I/O functions and other cases where there's little
value in implementing input and/or output. gtsvectorin never
got that memo though, nor did most of contrib. Make these all
fall in line, mostly because I'm a neatnik but also to remove
unnecessary translatable strings.
gbtreekey_in needs a bit of extra love since it supports
multiple SQL types. Sadly, gbtreekey_out doesn't have the
ability to do that, but I think it's unreachable anyway.
Noted while surveying datatype input functions to see what we
have left to fix.
The generated resource files aren't exactly the same ones as the old
buildsystems generate. Previously "InternalName" and "OriginalFileName" were
mostly wrong / not set (despite being required), but that was hard to fix in
at least the make build. Additionally, the meson build falls back to a
"auto-generated" description when not set, and doesn't set it in a few cases -
unlikely that anybody looks at these descriptions in detail.

The previous macro implementations just cast the argument to a target
type but did not check whether the input type was appropriate. The
function implementation can do better type checking of the input type.
For the *GetDatumFast() macros, converting to an inline function
doesn't work in the !USE_FLOAT8_BYVAL case, but we can use
AssertVariableIsOfTypeMacro() to get a similar level of type checking.

Autoconf is showing its age, fewer and fewer contributors know how to wrangle
it. Recursive make has a lot of hard to resolve dependency issues and slow
incremental rebuilds. Our home-grown MSVC build system is hard to maintain for
developers not using Windows and runs tests serially. While these and other
issues could individually be addressed with incremental improvements, together
they seem best addressed by moving to a more modern build system.
After evaluating different build system choices, we chose to use meson, to a
good degree based on the adoption by other open source projects.
We decided that it's more realistic to commit a relatively early version of
the new build system and mature it in tree.
This commit adds an initial version of a meson based build system. It supports
building postgres on at least AIX, FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
Solaris and Windows (however only gcc is supported on aix, solaris). For
Windows/MSVC postgres can now be built with ninja (faster, particularly for
incremental builds) and msbuild (supporting the visual studio GUI, but
building slower).
Several aspects (e.g. Windows rc file generation, PGXS compatibility, LLVM
bitcode generation, documentation adjustments) are done in subsequent commits
requiring further review. Other aspects (e.g. not installing test-only
extensions) are not yet addressed.
When building on Windows with msbuild, builds are slower when using a visual
studio version older than 2019, because those versions do not support
MultiToolTask, required by meson for intra-target parallelism.
The plan is to remove the MSVC specific build system in src/tools/msvc soon
after reaching feature parity. However, we're not planning to remove the
autoconf/make build system in the near future. Likely we're going to keep at
least the parts required for PGXS to keep working around until all supported
versions build with meson.

MemSet() with a value other than 0 just falls back to memset(), so the
indirection is unnecessary if the value is constant and not 0. Since
there is some interest in getting rid of MemSet(), this gets some easy
cases out of the way. (There are a few MemSet() calls that I didn't
change to maintain the consistency with their surrounding code.)

map and grep are not intended to be used as mutators, iterating
with side-effects should be done with for or foreach loops. This
fixes the one occurrence of the pattern, and bumps the perlcritic
policy to severity 5 for the map and grep policies.

Since PG 8.2, @ and ~ have been deprecated aliases for the containment
operators @> and <@. It seems like enough time has passed to actually
remove them, so do so.
This completes the project begun in commit 2f70fdb06. Note that in
the core types, the relation to the preferred operator names was
reversed from what it is in these contrib modules. The confusion
that induced was a large part of the reason for deprecation.

Hostile objects located within the installation-time search_path could
capture references in an extension's installation or upgrade script.
If the extension is being installed with superuser privileges, this
opens the door to privilege escalation. While such hazards have existed
all along, their urgency increases with the v13 "trusted extensions"
feature, because that lets a non-superuser control the installation path
for a superuser-privileged script. Therefore, make a number of changes
to make such situations more secure:
* Tweak the construction of the installation-time search_path to ensure
that references to objects in pg_catalog can't be subverted; and
explicitly add pg_temp to the end of the path to prevent attacks using
temporary objects.
* Disable check_function_bodies within installation/upgrade scripts,
so that any security gaps in SQL-language or PL-language function bodies
cannot create a risk of unwanted installation-time code execution.
* Adjust lookup of type input/receive functions and join estimator
functions to complain if there are multiple candidate functions. This
prevents capture of references to functions whose signature is not the
first one checked; and it's arguably more user-friendly anyway.
* Modify various contrib upgrade scripts to ensure that catalog
modification queries are executed with secure search paths. (These
are in-place modifications with no extension version changes, since
it is the update process itself that is at issue, not the end result.)
Extensions that depend on other extensions cannot be made fully secure
by these methods alone; therefore, revert the "trusted" marking that
commit eb67623c9 applied to earthdistance and hstore_plperl, pending
some better solution to that set of issues.
Also add documentation around these issues, to help extension authors
write secure installation scripts.

Since commit efc77cf5f, an indexed query using <@ has required a
full-index scan, so that it actually performs worse than a plain seqscan
would do. As I noted at the time, we'd be better off to not treat <@ as
being indexable by such indexes at all; and that's what this patch does.
It would have been difficult to remove these opclass members without
dropping the whole opclass before commit 9f9682783 fixed GiST opclass
member dependency rules, but now it's quite simple, so let's do it.
I left the existing support code in place for the time being, with
comments noting it's now unreachable. At some point, perhaps we should
remove that code in favor of throwing an error telling people to upgrade
the extension version.

Includes some manual cleanup of places that pgindent messed up,
most of which weren't per project style anyway.
Notably, it seems some people didn't absorb the style rules of
commit c9d297751, because there were a bunch of new occurrences
of function calls with a newline just after the left paren, all
with faulty expectations about how the rest of the call would get
indented.
We've had a mixture of the warnings pragma, the -w switch on the shebang
line, and no warnings at all. This patch removes the -w swicth and add
the warnings pragma to all perl sources missing it. It raises the
severity of the TestingAndDebugging::RequireUseWarnings perlcritic
policy to level 5, so that we catch any future violations.

PostgreSQL provides set of template index access methods, where opclasses have
much freedom in the semantics of indexing. These index AMs are GiST, GIN,
SP-GiST and BRIN. There opclasses define representation of keys, operations on
them and supported search strategies. So, it's natural that opclasses may be
faced some tradeoffs, which require user-side decision. This commit implements
opclass parameters allowing users to set some values, which tell opclass how to
index the particular dataset.
This commit doesn't introduce new storage in system catalog. Instead it uses
pg_attribute.attoptions, which is used for table column storage options but
unused for index attributes.
In order to evade changing signature of each opclass support function, we
implement unified way to pass options to opclass support functions. Options
are set to fn_expr as the constant bytea expression. It's possible due to the
fact that opclass support functions are executed outside of expressions, so
fn_expr is unused for them.
This commit comes with some examples of opclass options usage. We parametrize
signature length in GiST. That applies to multiple opclasses: tsvector_ops,
gist__intbig_ops, gist_ltree_ops, gist__ltree_ops, gist_trgm_ops and
gist_hstore_ops. Also we parametrize maximum number of integer ranges for
gist__int_ops. However, the main future usage of this feature is expected
to be json, where users would be able to specify which way to index particular
json parts.

Andres Freund pointed out that allowing non-superusers to run
"CREATE EXTENSION ... FROM unpackaged" has security risks, since
the unpackaged-to-1.0 scripts don't try to verify that the existing
objects they're modifying are what they expect. Just attaching such
objects to an extension doesn't seem too dangerous, but some of them
do more than that.
We could have resolved this, perhaps, by still requiring superuser
privilege to use the FROM option. However, it's fair to ask just what
we're accomplishing by continuing to lug the unpackaged-to-1.0 scripts
forward. None of them have received any real testing since 9.1 days,
so they may not even work anymore (even assuming that one could still
load the previous "loose" object definitions into a v13 database).
And an installation that's trying to go from pre-9.1 to v13 or later
in one jump is going to have worse compatibility problems than whether
there's a trivial way to convert their contrib modules into extension
style.
Hence, let's just drop both those scripts and the core-code support
for "CREATE EXTENSION ... FROM".

superuser privileges (assuming that the DBA or sysadmin has installed
the module's files in the expected place). You only need CREATE
privilege on the current database, which by default would be
available to the database owner.

We used to strategically place newlines after some function call left
parentheses to make pgindent move the argument list a few chars to the
left, so that the whole line would fit under 80 chars. However,
pgindent no longer does that, so the newlines just made the code
vertically longer for no reason. Remove those newlines, and reflow some
of those lines for some extra naturality.
