Invent SERIALIZE option for EXPLAIN.
EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, SERIALIZE) allows collection of statistics about the volume of data emitted by a query, as well as the time taken to convert the data to the on-the-wire format. Previously there was no way to investigate this without actually sending the data to the client, in which case network transmission costs might swamp what you wanted to see. In particular this feature allows investigating the costs of de-TOASTing compressed or out-of-line data during formatting. Add EXPLAIN (MEMORY) to report planner memory consumption
This adds a new "Memory:" line under the "Planning:" group (which currently only has "Buffers:") when the MEMORY option is specified. In order to make the reporting reasonably accurate, we create a separate memory context for planner activities, to be used only when this option is given. The total amount of memory allocated by that context is reported as "allocated"; we subtract memory in the context's freelists from that and report that result as "used". We use MemoryContextStatsInternal() to obtain the quantities. The code structure to show buffer usage during planning was not in amazing shape, so I (Álvaro) modified the patch a bit to clean that up in passing. Invent GENERIC_PLAN option for EXPLAIN.
This provides a very simple way to see the generic plan for a parameterized query. Without this, it's necessary to define a prepared statement and temporarily change plan_cache_mode, which is a bit tedious. One thing that's a bit of a hack perhaps is that we disable execution-time partition pruning when the GENERIC_PLAN option is given. That's because the pruning code may attempt to fetch the value of one of the parameters, which would fail. Track I/O timing for temporary file blocks in EXPLAIN (BUFFERS)
Previously, the output of EXPLAIN (BUFFERS) option showed only the I/O timing spent reading and writing shared and local buffers. This commit adds on top of that the I/O timing for temporary buffers in the output of EXPLAIN (for spilled external sorts, hashes, materialization. etc). This can be helpful for users in cases where the I/O related to temporary buffers is the bottleneck. Like its cousin, this information is available only when track_io_timing is enabled. Playing the patch, this is showing an extra overhead of up to 1% even when using gettimeofday() as implementation for interval timings, which is slightly within the usual range noise still that's measurable. Use the "pg_temp" schema alias in EXPLAIN and related output.
This patch causes EXPLAIN output to refer to objects that are in the current session's temp schema with the "pg_temp" schema alias rather than that schema's actual name. This is useful for our own testing purposes since it will stabilize EXPLAIN VERBOSE output for such cases, allowing us to use that in regression tests. It should be less confusing for end users too. Since ruleutils.c needs to change behavior for this, the change also leaks into a few other users of ruleutils.c, for example pg_get_viewdef(). AFAICS that won't cause any problems. We did find that aggressively trying to change this behavior across-the-board would cause issues, but as long as "pg_temp" only appears within generated SQL text, I think it'll be fine. Along the way, make get_namespace_name_or_temp conform to the same API as get_namespace_name, ie that it returns a palloc'd string or NULL. The current behavior hasn't caused any bugs since no callers attempt to pfree the result, but if it gets more widespread usage that could become a problem. Make use of in-core query id added by commit 5fd9dfa5f5
Use the in-core query id computation for pg_stat_activity, log_line_prefix, and EXPLAIN VERBOSE. Similar to other fields in pg_stat_activity, only the queryid from the top level statements are exposed, and if the backends status isn't active then the queryid from the last executed statements is displayed. Add a %Q placeholder to include the queryid in log_line_prefix, which will also only expose top level statements. For EXPLAIN VERBOSE, if a query identifier has been computed, either by enabling compute_query_id or using a third-party module, display it. Bump catalog version. Fix EXPLAIN (SETTINGS) to follow policy about when to print empty fields.
In non-TEXT output formats, the "Settings" field should appear when requested, even if it would be empty. Also, get rid of the premature optimization of counting all the GUC_EXPLAIN variables at startup. Since there was no provision for adjusting that count later, all it'd take would be some extension marking a parameter as GUC_EXPLAIN to risk an assertion failure or memory stomp. We could make get_explain_guc_options() count those variables on-the-fly, or dynamically resize its array ... but TBH I do not think that making a transient array of pointers a bit smaller is worth any extra complication, especially when you consider all the other transient space EXPLAIN eats. So just allocate that array at the max possible size. In HEAD, also add some regression test coverage for this feature. Clean up EXPLAIN's handling of per-worker details.
Previously, it was possible for EXPLAIN ANALYZE of a parallel query
to produce several different "Workers" fields for a single plan node,
because different portions of explain.c independently generated
per-worker data and wrapped that output in separate fields. This
is pretty bogus, especially for the structured output formats: even
if it's not technically illegal, most programs would have a hard time
dealing with such data.
To improve matters, add infrastructure that allows redirecting
per-worker values into a side data structure, and then collect that
data into a single "Workers" field after we've finished running all
the relevant code for a given plan node.
There are a few visible side-effects:

* When JIT is enabled, any relevant per-worker JIT stats are attached
to the child node of the Gather or Gather Merge node, which is where
the other per-worker output has always been. Previously, that info
was attached directly to a Gather node, or missed entirely for Gather
Merge.
* A query's summary JIT data no longer includes a bogus
"Worker Number: -1" field.
A notable code-level change is that indenting for lines of text-format
output should now be handled by calling "ExplainIndentText(es)",
instead of hard-wiring how much space to emit. This seems a good deal
cleaner anyway.
This patch also adds a new "explain.sql" regression test script that's
dedicated to testing EXPLAIN. There is more that can be done in that
line, certainly, but for now it just adds some coverage of the XML and
YAML output formats, which had been completely untested.
Although this is surely a bug fix, it's not clear that people would
be happy with rearranging EXPLAIN output in a minor release, so apply
