The reason for doing so is that it will allow expression evaluation to
optimize based on the underlying tupledesc. In particular it will
allow to JIT tuple deforming together with the expression itself.
For that expression initialization needs to be moved after the
relevant slots are initialized - mostly unproblematic, except in the
case of nodeWorktablescan.c.
After doing so there's no need for ExecAssignResultType() and
ExecAssignResultTypeFromTL() anymore, as all former callers have been
converted to create a slot with a fixed descriptor.
When creating a slot with a fixed descriptor, tts_values/isnull can be
allocated together with the main slot, reducing allocation overhead
and increasing cache density a bit.

It's a common task to evaluate a qual and reset the corresponding
expression context. Currently that requires storing the result of the
qual eval, resetting the context, and then reacting on the result. As
that's awkward several places only reset the context next time through
a node. That's not great, so introduce a helper that evaluates and
resets.
It's a bit ugly that it currently uses MemoryContextReset() instead of
ResetExprContext(), but that seems easier than reordering all of
executor.h.

Commit 09529a70b changed nodeIndexscan.c and nodeIndexonlyscan.c to
postpone initialization of the indexscan proper until the first tuple
fetch. It overlooked the question of mark/restore behavior, which means
that if some caller attempts to mark the scan before the first tuple fetch,
you get a null pointer dereference.
The only existing user of mark/restore is nodeMergejoin.c, which (somewhat
accidentally) will never attempt to set a mark before the first inner tuple
unless the inner child node is a Material node. Hence the case can't arise
normally, so it seems sufficient to document the assumption at both ends.
However, during an EvalPlanQual recheck, ExecScanFetch doesn't call
IndexNext but just returns the jammed-in test tuple. Therefore, if we're
doing a recheck in a plan tree with a mergejoin with inner indexscan,
it's possible to reach ExecIndexMarkPos with iss_ScanDesc still null,
as reported by Guo Xiang Tan in bug #15032.
Really, when there's a test tuple supplied during an EPQ recheck, touching
the index at all is the wrong thing: rather, the behavior of mark/restore
ought to amount to saving and restoring the es_epqScanDone flag. We can
avoid finding a place to actually save the flag, for the moment, because
given the assumption that no caller will set a mark before fetching a
tuple, es_epqScanDone must always be set by the time we try to mark.
So the actual behavior change required is just to not reach the index
access if a test tuple is supplied.
The set of plan node types that need to consider this issue are those
that support EPQ test tuples (i.e., call ExecScan()) and also support
mark/restore; which is to say, IndexScan, IndexOnlyScan, and perhaps
CustomScan. It's tempting to try to fix the problem in one place by
teaching ExecMarkPos() itself about EPQ; but ExecMarkPos supports some
plan types that aren't Scans, and also it seems risky to make assumptions
about what a CustomScan wants to do here. Also, the most likely future
change here is to decide that we do need to support marks placed before
the first tuple, which would require additional work in IndexScan and
IndexOnlyScan in any case. Hence, fix the EPQ issue in nodeIndexscan.c
and nodeIndexonlyscan.c, accepting the small amount of code duplicated
thereby, and leave it to CustomScan providers to fix this bug if they
have it.
Back-patch to v10 where commit 09529a70b came in. In earlier branches,
the index_markpos() call is a waste of cycles when EPQ is active, but
no more than that, so it doesn't seem appropriate to back-patch further.

Previously, executor nodes running in parallel worker processes didn't
have access to the dsm_segment object used for parallel execution. In
order to support resource management based on DSM segment lifetime,
they need that. So create a ParallelWorkerContext object to hold it
and pass it to all InitializeWorker functions.

The lower case spellings are C and C++ standard and are used in most
parts of the PostgreSQL sources. The upper case spellings are only used
in some files/modules. So standardize on the standard spellings.
The APIs for ICU, Perl, and Windows define their own TRUE and FALSE, so
those are left as is when using those APIs.
In code comments, we use the lower-case spelling for the C concepts and
keep the upper-case spelling for the SQL concepts.

Previously, the parallel executor logic did reinitialization of shared
state within the ExecReScan code for parallel-aware scan nodes. This is
problematic, because it means that the ExecReScan call has to occur
synchronously (ie, during the parent Gather node's ReScan call). That is
swimming very much against the tide so far as the ExecReScan machinery is
concerned; the fact that it works at all today depends on a lot of fragile
assumptions, such as that no plan node between Gather and a parallel-aware
scan node is parameterized. Another objection is that because ExecReScan
might be called in workers as well as the leader, hacky extra tests are
needed in some places to prevent unwanted shared-state resets.
Hence, let's separate this code into two functions, a ReInitializeDSM
call and the ReScan call proper. ReInitializeDSM is called only in
the leader and is guaranteed to run before we start new workers.
ReScan is returned to its traditional function of resetting only local
state, which means that ExecReScan's usual habits of delaying or
eliminating child rescan calls are safe again.
As with the preceding commit 7df2c1f8d, it doesn't seem to be necessary
to make these changes in 9.6, which is a good thing because the FDW and
CustomScan APIs are impacted.

This allows us to add stack-depth checks the first time an executor
node is called, and skip that overhead on following
calls. Additionally it yields a nice speedup.
While it'd probably have been a good idea to have that check all
along, it has become more important after the new expression
evaluation framework in b8d7f053c5 - there's no stack depth
check in common paths anymore now. We previously relied on
ExecEvalExpr() being executed somewhere.
We should move towards that model for further routines, but as this is
required for v10, it seems better to only do the necessary (which
already is quite large).

In a followup commit ExecProcNode(), and especially the large switch
it contains, will largely be replaced by a function pointer directly
to the correct node. The node functions will then get invoked by a
thin inline function wrapper. To avoid having to include miscadmin.h
in headers - CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() - move the interrupt checks into
the individual executor routines.
While looking through all executor nodes, I noticed a number of
arguably missing interrupt checks, add these too.

Add error checks in some places that were calling get_opfamily_member
or get_opfamily_proc and just assuming that the call could never fail.
Also, standardize the wording for such errors in some other places.
None of these errors are expected in normal use, hence they're just
elog not ereport. But they may be handy for diagnosing omissions in
custom opclasses.

Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.
By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.
This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.
This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments
to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments
following #endif to not obey the general rule.
Commit e3860ffa4d wasn't actually using
the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that
tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of
code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be
moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's
code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops
in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working
in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the
net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed
one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves
more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such
cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after
the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after.
Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same
as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else.
That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage
from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent.
This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Given the possibility of race conditions and so on, it seems entirely
unsafe to just assume that shm_toc_lookup() always finds the key it's
looking for --- but that was exactly what all but one call site were
doing. To fix, add a "bool noError" argument, similarly to what we
have in many other functions, and throw an error on an unexpected
lookup failure. Remove now-redundant Asserts that a rather random
subset of call sites had.
I doubt this will throw any light on buildfarm member lorikeet's
recent failures, because if an unnoticed lookup failure were involved,
you'd kind of expect a null-pointer-dereference crash rather than the
observed symptom. But you never know ... and this is better coding
practice even if it never catches anything.

This replaces the old, recursive tree-walk based evaluation, with
non-recursive, opcode dispatch based, expression evaluation.
Projection is now implemented as part of expression evaluation.
This both leads to significant performance improvements, and makes
future just-in-time compilation of expressions easier.
The speed gains primarily come from:
- non-recursive implementation reduces stack usage / overhead
- simple sub-expressions are implemented with a single jump, without
function calls
- sharing some state between different sub-expressions
- reduced amount of indirect/hard to predict memory accesses by laying
out operation metadata sequentially; including the avoidance of
nearly all of the previously used linked lists
- more code has been moved to expression initialization, avoiding
constant re-checks at evaluation time
Future just-in-time compilation (JIT) has become easier, as
demonstrated by released patches intended to be merged in a later
release, for primarily two reasons: Firstly, due to a stricter split
between expression initialization and evaluation, less code has to be
handled by the JIT. Secondly, due to the non-recursive nature of the
generated "instructions", less performance-critical code-paths can
easily be shared between interpreted and compiled evaluation.
The new framework allows for significant future optimizations. E.g.:
- basic infrastructure for to later reduce the per executor-startup
overhead of expression evaluation, by caching state in prepared
statements. That'd be helpful in OLTPish scenarios where
initialization overhead is measurable.
- optimizing the generated "code". A number of proposals for potential
work has already been made.
- optimizing the interpreter. Similarly a number of proposals have
been made here too.
The move of logic into the expression initialization step leads to some
backward-incompatible changes:
- Function permission checks are now done during expression
initialization, whereas previously they were done during
execution. In edge cases this can lead to errors being raised that
previously wouldn't have been, e.g. a NULL array being coerced to a
different array type previously didn't perform checks.
- The set of domain constraints to be checked, is now evaluated once
during expression initialization, previously it was re-built
every time a domain check was evaluated. For normal queries this
doesn't change much, but e.g. for plpgsql functions, which caches
ExprStates, the old set could stick around longer. The behavior
around might still change.

Parallel executor nodes can't assume that parallel execution will
happen in every case where the plan calls for it, because it might
not work out that way. However, parallel index scan and parallel
index-only scan failed to do the right thing here. Repair.

In combination with 569174f1be, which
taught the btree AM how to perform parallel index scans, this allows
parallel index scan plans on btree indexes. This infrastructure
should be general enough to support parallel index scans for other
index AMs as well, if someone updates them to support parallel
scans.

Since 69f4b9c plain expression evaluation (and thus normal projection)
can't return sets of tuples anymore. Thus remove code dealing with

Fix still another bug in commit 35fcb1b3d: it failed to fully initialize
the SortSupport states it introduced to allow the executor to re-check
ORDER BY expressions containing distance operators. That led to a null
pointer dereference if the sortsupport code tried to use ssup_cxt. The
problem only manifests in narrow cases, explaining the lack of previous
field reports. It requires a GiST-indexable distance operator that lacks
SortSupport and is on a pass-by-ref data type, which among core+contrib
seems to be only btree_gist's interval opclass; and it requires the scan
to be done as an IndexScan not an IndexOnlyScan, which explains how
btree_gist's regression test didn't catch it. Per bug #14134 from
Jihyun Yu.

Now indexes (but only B-tree for now) can contain "extra" column(s) which
doesn't participate in index structure, they are just stored in leaf
tuples. It allows to use index only scan by using single index instead

This patch reduces pg_am to just two columns, a name and a handler
function. All the data formerly obtained from pg_am is now provided
in a C struct returned by the handler function. This is similar to
the designs we've adopted for FDWs and tablesample methods. There
are multiple advantages. For one, the index AM's support functions
are now simple C functions, making them faster to call and much less
error-prone, since the C compiler can now check function signatures.
For another, this will make it far more practical to define index access
methods in installable extensions.
A disadvantage is that SQL-level code can no longer see attributes
of index AMs; in particular, some of the crosschecks in the opr_sanity
regression test are no longer possible from SQL. We've addressed that
by adding a facility for the index AM to perform such checks instead.
(Much more could be done in that line, but for now we're content if the
amvalidate functions more or less replace what opr_sanity used to do.)
We might also want to expose some sort of reporting functionality, but
this patch doesn't do that.

Fix confusion in documentation, substantial memory leakage if float8 or
float4 are pass-by-reference, and assorted comments that were obsoleted
by commit 98edd617f3.
Paul Ramsey reported that commit 35fcb1b3d0
induced a core dump on commuted ORDER BY expressions, because it was
assuming that the indexorderby expression could be found verbatim in the
relevant equivalence class, but it wasn't there. We really don't need
anything that complicated anyway; for the data types likely to be used for
index ORDER BY operators in the foreseeable future, the exprType() of the
ORDER BY expression will serve fine. (The case where we'd have to work
harder is where the ORDER BY expression's result is only binary-compatible
with the declared input type of the ordering operator; long before worrying
about that, one would need to get rid of GiST's hard-wired assumption that
said datatype is float8.)
Aside from fixing that crash and adding a regression test for the case,
I did some desultory code review:
nodeIndexscan.c was likewise overthinking how hard it ought to work to
identify the datatype of the ORDER BY expressions.
Add comments explaining how come nodeIndexscan.c can get away with
simplifying assumptions about NULLS LAST ordering and no backward scan.
Revert no-longer-needed changes of find_ec_member_for_tle(); while the
new definition was no worse than the old, it wasn't better either, and
it might cause back-patching pain.
Revert entirely bogus additions to genam.h.
This oversight results in a crash at executor startup if the plan has
been copied. outfuncs.c was missed as well.
While we could probably have taught both those files to cope with the
originally chosen representation of an Oid array, it would have been
painful, not least because there'd be no easy way to verify the array
length. An Oid List is far easier to work with. And AFAICS, there is
no particular notational benefit to using an array rather than a list
in the existing parts of the patch either. So just change it to a list.
Error in commit 35fcb1b3d0, which is new,
so no need for back-patch.
We can only support a lossy distance function when the distance function's
datatype is comparable with the original ordering operator's datatype.
The distance function always returns a float8, so we are limited to float8,
and float4 (by a hard-coded cast of the float8 to float4).
In light of this limitation, it seems like a good idea to have a separate
'recheck' flag for the ORDER BY expressions, so that if you have a non-lossy
distance function, it still works with lossy quals. There are cases like
that with the build-in or contrib opclasses, but it's plausible.
There was a hidden assumption that the ORDER BY values returned by GiST
match the original ordering operator's return type, but there are plenty
of examples where that's not true, e.g. in btree_gist and pg_trgm. As long
as the distance function is not lossy, we can tolerate that and just not
return the distance to the executor (or rather, always return NULL). The
executor doesn't need the distances if there are no lossy results.
There was another little bug: the recheck variable was not initialized
before calling the distance function. That revealed the bigger issue,
as the executor tried to reorder tuples that didn't need reordering, and
that failed because of the datatype mismatch.
The distance function can now set *recheck = false, like index quals. The
executor will then re-check the ORDER BY expressions, and use a queue to
reorder the results on the fly.
This makes it possible to do kNN-searches on polygons and circles, which
don't store the exact value in the index, but just a bounding box.

Move checking for unscannable matviews into ExecOpenScanRelation, which is
a better place for it first because the open relation is already available
(saving a relcache lookup cycle), and second because this eliminates the
problem of telling the difference between rangetable entries that will or
will not be scanned by the query. In particular we can get rid of the
not-terribly-well-thought-out-or-implemented isResultRel field that the
initial matviews patch added to RangeTblEntry.
Also get rid of entirely unnecessary scannability check in the rewriter,
and a bogus decision about whether RefreshMatViewStmt requires a parse-time
snapshot.
catversion bump due to removal of a RangeTblEntry field, which changes
stored rules.
This commit changes index-only scans so that data is read directly from the
index tuple without first generating a faux heap tuple. The only immediate
benefit is that indexes on system columns (such as OID) can be used in
index-only scans, but this is necessary infrastructure if we are ever to
support index-only scans on expression indexes. The executor is now ready
for that, though the planner still needs substantial work to recognize
the possibility.
To do this, Vars in index-only plan nodes have to refer to index columns
not heap columns. I introduced a new special varno, INDEX_VAR, to mark
such Vars to avoid confusion. (In passing, this commit renames the two
existing special varnos to OUTER_VAR and INNER_VAR.) This allows
ruleutils.c to handle them with logic similar to what we use for subplan
reference Vars.
Since index-only scans are now fundamentally different from regular
indexscans so far as their expression subtrees are concerned, I also chose
to change them to have their own plan node type (and hence, their own
executor source file).
We copy all the matched tuples off the page during _bt_readpage, instead of
expensively re-locking the page during each subsequent tuple fetch. This
costs a bit more local storage, but not more than 2*BLCKSZ worth, and the
reduction in LWLock traffic is certainly worth that. What's more, this
lets us get rid of the API wart in the original patch that said an index AM
could randomly decline to supply an index tuple despite having asserted
pg_am.amcanreturn. That will be important for future improvements in the
index-only-scan feature, since the executor will now be able to rely on
having the index data available.
When a btree index contains all columns required by the query, and the
visibility map shows that all tuples on a target heap page are
visible-to-all, we don't need to fetch that heap page. This patch depends
on the previous patches that made the visibility map reliable.
There's a fair amount left to do here, notably trying to figure out a less
chintzy way of estimating the cost of an index-only scan, but the core
functionality seems ready to commit.

This provides information about the numbers of tuples that were visited
but not returned by table scans, as well as the numbers of join tuples
that were considered and discarded within a join plan node.
There is still some discussion going on about the best way to report counts
for outer-join situations, but I think most of what's in the patch would
not change if we revise that, so I'm going to go ahead and commit it as-is.
Documentation changes to follow (they weren't in the submitted patch
either).

walsender.h should depend on xlog.h, not vice versa. (Actually, the
inclusion was circular until a couple hours ago, which was even sillier;
but Bruce broke it in the expedient rather than logically correct
direction.) Because of that poor decision, plus blind application of
pgrminclude, we had a situation where half the system was depending on
xlog.h to include such unrelated stuff as array.h and guc.h. Clean up
the header inclusion, and manually revert a lot of what pgrminclude had
done so things build again.
This episode reinforces my feeling that pgrminclude should not be run
without adult supervision. Inclusion changes in header files in particular
need to be reviewed with great care. More generally, it'd be good if we
had a clearer notion of module layering to dictate which headers can sanely
include which others ... but that's a big task for another day.
Since collation is effectively an argument, not a property of the function,
FmgrInfo is really the wrong place for it; and this becomes critical in
cases where a cached FmgrInfo is used for varying purposes that might need
different collation settings. Fix by passing it in FunctionCallInfoData
instead. In particular this allows a clean fix for bug #5970 (record_cmp
not working). This requires touching a bit more code than the original
method, but nobody ever thought that collations would not be an invasive
patch...
All expression nodes now have an explicit output-collation field, unless
they are known to only return a noncollatable data type (such as boolean
or record). Also, nodes that can invoke collation-aware functions store
a separate field that is the collation value to pass to the function.
This avoids confusion that arises when a function has collatable inputs
and noncollatable output type, or vice versa.
Also, replace the parser's on-the-fly collation assignment method with
a post-pass over the completed expression tree. This allows us to use
a more complex (and hopefully more nearly spec-compliant) assignment
rule without paying for it in extra storage in every expression node.
Fix assorted bugs in the planner's handling of collations by making
collation one of the defining properties of an EquivalenceClass and
by converting CollateExprs into discardable RelabelType nodes during
expression preprocessing.
