The t_iseq() macro does not need to be guarded by a character
length check (at least when the comparison value is an ASCII
character, as its documentation requires). Some portions of
contrib/ltree hadn't read that memo, so simplify them.
The last change in gettoken_query,

+ else if (!t_iseq(state->buf, ' '))
looks like it's actually a bug fix: I doubt that the intention
was to silently ignore multibyte characters as if they were
whitespace. I'm not tempted to back-patch though, because this
will have the effect of tightening what is allowed in ltxtquery
strings.

guc.c has grown to be one of our largest .c files, making it
a bottleneck for compilation. It's also acquired a bunch of
knowledge that'd be better kept elsewhere, because of our not
very good habit of putting variable-specific check hooks here.
Hence, split it up along these lines:
* guc.c itself retains just the core GUC housekeeping mechanisms.
* New file guc_funcs.c contains the SET/SHOW interfaces and some
SQL-accessible functions for GUC manipulation.
* New file guc_tables.c contains the data arrays that define the
built-in GUC variables, along with some already-exported constant
tables.
* GUC check/assign/show hook functions are moved to the variable's
home module, whenever that's clearly identifiable. A few hard-
to-classify hooks ended up in commands/variable.c, which was
already a home for miscellaneous GUC hook functions.
To avoid cluttering a lot more header files with #include "guc.h",
I also invented a new header file utils/guc_hooks.h and put all
the GUC hook functions' declarations there, regardless of their
originating module. That allowed removal of #include "guc.h"
from some existing headers. The fallout from that (hopefully
all caught here) demonstrates clearly why such inclusions are
best minimized: there are a lot of files that, for example,
were getting array.h at two or more levels of remove, despite
not having any connection at all to GUCs in themselves.
There is some very minor code beautification here, such as
renaming a couple of inconsistently-named hook functions
and improving some comments. But mostly this just moves
code from point A to point B and deals with the ensuing
needs for #include adjustments and exporting a few functions
that previously weren't exported.

The existing implementation of the ltree ~ lquery match operator is
sufficiently complex and undocumented that it's hard to tell exactly
what it does. But one thing it clearly gets wrong is the combination
of NOT symbols (!) and '*' symbols. A pattern such as '*.!foo.*'
should, by any ordinary understanding of regular expression behavior,
match any ltree that has at least one label that's not "foo". As best
we can tell by experimentation, what it's actually matching is any
ltree in which *no* label is "foo". That's surprising, and not at all
what the documentation says.
Now, that's arguably a useful behavior, so if we rewrite to fix the
bug we should provide some other way to get it. To do so, add the
ability to attach lquery quantifiers to non-'*' items as well as '*'s.
Then the pattern '!foo{,}' expresses "any ltree in which no label is
foo". For backwards compatibility, the default quantifier for non-'*'
items has to be "{1}", although the default for '*' items is '{,}'.
I wouldn't have done it like that in a green field, but it's not
totally horrible.
Armed with that, rewrite checkCond() from scratch. Treating '*' and
non-'*' items alike makes it simpler, not more complicated, so that
the function actually gets a lot shorter than it was.

Something like "*{2}.*{3}" should presumably mean the same as
"*{5}", but it didn't. Improve that.
Get rid of an undocumented and remarkably ugly (though not, as far as
I can tell, actually unsafe) static variable in favor of passing more
arguments to checkCond().
Reverse-engineer some commentary. This function, like all of ltree,
is still far short of what I would consider the minimum acceptable
level of internal documentation, but at least now it has more than
zero comments.
Although this certainly seems like a bug fix, people might not
thank us for changing query behavior in stable branches, so
no back-patch.

We used to strategically place newlines after some function call left
parentheses to make pgindent move the argument list a few chars to the
left, so that the whole line would fit under 80 chars. However,
pgindent no longer does that, so the newlines just made the code
vertically longer for no reason. Remove those newlines, and reflow some
of those lines for some extra naturality.

The basic rule we follow here is to always first include 'postgres.h' or
'postgres_fe.h' whichever is applicable, then system header includes and
then Postgres header includes. In this, we also follow that all the
Postgres header includes are in order based on their ASCII value. We
generally follow these rules, but the code has deviated in many places.
This commit makes it consistent just for contrib modules. The later
commits will enforce similar rules in other parts of code.

By project convention, these names should include "P" when dealing with a
pointer type; that is, if the result of a GETARG macro is of type FOO *,
it should be called PG_GETARG_FOO_P not just PG_GETARG_FOO. Some newer
types such as JSONB and ranges had not followed the convention, and a
number of contrib modules hadn't gotten that memo either. Rename the
offending macros to improve consistency.
In passing, fix a few places that thought PG_DETOAST_DATUM() returns
a Datum; it does not, it returns "struct varlena *". Applying
DatumGetPointer to that happens not to cause any bad effects today,
but it's formally wrong. Also, adjust an ltree macro that was designed
without any thought for what pgindent would do with it.
This is all cosmetic and shouldn't have any impact on generated code.

Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.
By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.
This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.
This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak.
The main changes visible in this commit are:
* Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations.
* No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts,
sizeof, or offsetof.
* No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as
well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers.
* Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely.
* Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed
with no space separating them from the code.
* Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels.
* Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less
than the expected column 33.
On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef
names that are not listed in typedefs.list. This might encourage us to
put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in
indent itself.
There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment
indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses. I wanted
to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without
one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the
changes as much as practical.

This adds collation support for columns and domains, a COLLATE clause
to override it per expression, and B-tree index support.

This applies the fix for bug #5784 to remaining places where we wish
to reject nulls in user-supplied arrays. In all these places, there's
no reason not to allow a null bitmap to be present, so long as none of
the current elements are actually null.
I did not change some other places where we are looking at system catalog
entries or aggregate transition values, as the presence of a null bitmap
in such an array would be suspicious.
The main motivation for changing this is bug #4921, in which it's pointed out
that it's no longer safe to apply ltree operations to the result of
ARRAY(SELECT ...) if the sub-select might return no rows. Before 8.3,
the ARRAY() construct would return NULL, which might or might not be helpful
but at least it wouldn't result in an error. Now it returns an empty array
which results in a failure for no good reason, since the ltree operations
are all perfectly capable of dealing with zero-element arrays.
As far as I can find, these ltree functions are the only places where zero
array dimensionality is rejected unnecessarily.
Back-patch to 8.3 to prevent behavioral regression of queries that worked
in older releases.
unnecessary #include lines in it. Also, move some tuple routine prototypes and
macros to htup.h, which allows removal of heapam.h inclusion from some .c
files.
For this to work, a new header file access/sysattr.h needed to be created,
initially containing attribute numbers of system columns, for pg_dump usage.
While at it, make contrib ltree, intarray and hstore header files more
consistent with our header style.
more compliant with the error message style guide. In particular,
errdetail should begin with a capital letter and end with a period,
whereas errmsg should not. I also fixed a few related issues in
passing, such as fixing the repeated misspelling of "lexeme" in
contrib/tsearch2 (per Tom's suggestion).
conversion of basic ASCII letters. Remove all uses of strcasecmp and
strncasecmp in favor of new functions pg_strcasecmp and pg_strncasecmp;
remove most but not all direct uses of toupper and tolower in favor of
pg_toupper and pg_tolower. These functions use the same notions of
case folding already developed for identifier case conversion. I left
the straight locale-based folding in place for situations where we are
just manipulating user data and not trying to match it to built-in
strings --- for example, the SQL upper() function is still locale
dependent. Perhaps this will prove not to be what's wanted, but at
the moment we can initdb and pass regression tests in Turkish locale.
