Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.
By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.
This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.
This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Although it's reasonable to expect that most of these constants will
never change, that does not make it good programming style to hard-code
the value rather than using the RELKIND_FOO macros.

Previously, pg_upgrade migrated sequence data like tables by copying the
on-disk file. This does not allow any changes in the on-disk format for
sequences. It's simpler to just have pg_dump set the new sequence
values as it normally does. To do that, create a hidden submode in
pg_dump that dumps sequence data even when a schema-only dump is
requested, and trigger that submode in binary upgrade mode. (This new
submode could easily be exposed as a command-line option, but it has
limited use outside of pg_dump and would probably cause some confusion,
so we don't do that at this time.)

Ordinarily, pg_upgrade shouldn't have any difficulty in matching up all
the relations it sees in the old and new databases. If it does, however,
it just goes belly-up with a pretty unhelpful error message. That seemed
fine as long as we expected the case never to occur in the wild, but
Alvaro reported that it had been seen in a database whose pg_largeobject
table had somehow acquired a TOAST table. That doesn't quite seem like
a case that pg_upgrade actually needs to handle, but it would be good if
the report were more diagnosable. Hence, extend the logic to print out
as much information as we can about the mismatch(es) before we quit.
In passing, improve the readability of get_rel_infos()'s data collection
query, which had suffered seriously from lets-not-bother-to-update-comments
syndrome, and generally was unnecessarily disrespectful to readers.
It could be argued that this is a bug fix, but given that we have so few
reports, I don't feel a need to back-patch; at least not before this has
baked awhile in HEAD.
Modify pg_dump to restore postgres/template1 databases to non-default
tablespaces by switching out of the database to be moved, then switching
back.
Also, to fix potentially cases where the old/new tablespaces might not
match, fix pg_upgrade to process new/old tablespaces separately in all
cases.

Backpatch through 9.0
Lc_collate and lc_ctype have been per-database settings since server version
8.4, but pg_upgrade was still treating them as cluster-wide options. It
fetched the values for the template0 databases in old and new cluster, and
compared them. That's backwards; the encoding and locale of the template0
database doesn't matter, as template0 is guaranteed to contain only ASCII
characters. But if there are any other databases that exist on both clusters
(in particular template1 and postgres databases), their encodings and
locales must be compatible.
Also, make the locale comparison more lenient. If the locale names are not
equal, try to canonicalize both of them by passing them to setlocale(). We
used to do that only when upgrading from 9.1 or below, but it seems like a
good idea even with newer versions. If we change the canonical form of a
locale, this allows pg_upgrade to still work. I'm about to do just that to
fix bug #11431, by mapping a locale name that contains non-ASCII characters
to a pure-ASCII alias of the same locale.
No backpatching, because earlier versions of pg_upgrade still support
upgrading from 8.3 servers. That would be more complicated, so it doesn't
seem worth it, given that we haven't received any complaints about this
from users.
Previously, when calculations on the need for toast tables changed,
pg_upgrade could not handle cases where the new cluster needed a TOAST
table and the old cluster did not. (It already handled the opposite
case.) This fixes the "OID mismatch" error typically generated in this
case.
Backpatch through 9.2
There were some C comments that hadn't been updated from the switch of
using only pg_dumpall to using pg_dump and pg_dumpall, so update them.
Also, don't bother using --schema-only for pg_dumpall --globals-only.
Backpatch through 9.4
Treat TOAST index just the same as normal one and get the OID
of TOAST index from pg_index but not pg_class.reltoastidxid.
This change allows us to handle multiple TOAST indexes, and
which is required infrastructure for upcoming
REINDEX CONCURRENTLY feature.

Make slightly better decisions about indentation than what pgindent
is capable of. Mostly breaking out long function calls into one
line per argument, with a few other minor adjustments.
No functional changes- all whitespace.
pgindent ran cleanly (didn't change anything) after.

Now that pg_dump no longer dumps invalid indexes, per commit
683abc73df, have pg_upgrade also skip
them. Previously pg_upgrade threw an error if invalid indexes existed.
Backpatch to 9.2, 9.1, and 9.0 (where pg_upgrade was added to git)
A materialized view has a rule just like a view and a heap and
other physical properties like a table. The rule is only used to
populate the table, references in queries refer to the
materialized data.
This is a minimal implementation, but should still be useful in
many cases. Currently data is only populated "on demand" by the
CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW and REFRESH MATERIALIZED VIEW statements.
It is expected that future releases will add incremental updates
with various timings, and that a more refined concept of defining
what is "fresh" data will be developed. At some point it may even
be possible to have queries use a materialized in place of
references to underlying tables, but that requires the other
above-mentioned features to be working first.

libpgcommon is a new static library to allow sharing code among the
various frontend programs and backend; this lets us eliminate duplicate
implementations of common routines. We avoid libpgport, because that's
intended as a place for porting issues; per discussion, it seems better
to keep them separate.
The first use case, and the only implemented by this patch, is pg_malloc
and friends, which many frontend programs were already using.
At the same time, we can use this to provide palloc emulation functions
for the frontend; this way, some palloc-using files in the backend can
also be used by the frontend cleanly. To do this, we change palloc() in
the backend to be a function instead of a macro on top of
MemoryContextAlloc(). This was previously believed to cause loss of
performance, but this implementation has been tweaked by Tom and Andres
so that on modern compilers it provides a slight improvement over the
previous one.
This lets us clean up some places that were already with
localized hacks.
Most of the pg_malloc/palloc changes in this patch were authored by
Andres Freund. Zoltán Böszörményi also independently provided a form of
that. libpgcommon infrastructure was authored by Álvaro.
Because the client encoding might not match the server encoding,
pg_upgrade can't allocate NAMEDATALEN bytes for storage of database,
relation, and namespace identifiers. Instead pg_strdup() the memory and
free it.
Also add C comment in initdb.c about safe NAMEDATALEN usage.
entries are not dumped. This fixes an error caused by
droping/recreating the information_schema, but other failures were also
possible.
Backpatch to 9.2.

Instead, add a function pg_tablespace_location(oid) used to return
the same information, and do this by reading the symbolic link.
Doing it this way makes it possible to relocate a tablespace when the
database is down by simply changing the symbolic link.
Add __attribute__ decorations for printf format checking to the places that
were missing them. Fix the resulting warnings. Add
-Wmissing-format-attribute to the standard set of warnings for GCC, so these
don't happen again.
The warning fixes here are relatively harmless. The one serious problem
discovered by this was already committed earlier in
cf15fb5cab.
Add errno-based output to error messages where appropriate, reformat
blocks to about 72 characters per line, use spaces instead of tabs for
indentation, and other style adjustments.
