The idea is to encourage more the use of these new routines across the
tree, as these offer stronger type safety guarantees than palloc(). In
an ideal world, palloc() would then act as an internal routine of these
flavors, whose footprint in the tree is minimal.
The patch sent by the author is very large, and this chunk of changes
represents something like 10% of the overall patch submitted.
The code compiled is the same before and after this commit, using
objdump to do some validation with a difference taken in-between. There
are some diffs, which are caused by changes in line numbers because some
of the new allocation formulas are shorter, for the following files:
trgm_regexp.c, xpath.c and pg_walinspect.c.

The comment for the Pointer type says 'XXX Pointer arithmetic is done
with this, so it can't be void * under "true" ANSI compilers.'. This
fixes that. Change from Pointer to use char * explicitly where
pointer arithmetic is needed. This makes the meaning of the code
clearer locally and removes a dependency on the actual definition of
the Pointer type. (The definition of the Pointer type is not changed
in this commit.)

BufferGetPage() already returns type Page, so casting it to Page
doesn't achieve anything. A sizable number of call sites does this
casting; remove that.
This was already done inconsistently in the code in the first import
in 1996 (but didn't exist in the pre-1995 code), and it was then
apparently just copied around.

It seems potentially useful to label our shared libraries with version
information, now that a facility exists for retrieving that. This
patch labels them with the PG_VERSION string. There was some
discussion about using semantic versioning conventions, but that
doesn't seem terribly helpful for modules with no SQL-level presence;
and for those that do have SQL objects, we typically expect them
to support multiple revisions of the SQL definitions, so it'd still
not be very helpful.
I did not label any of src/test/modules/. It seems unnecessary since
we don't install those, and besides there ought to be someplace that
still provides test coverage for the original PG_MODULE_MAGIC macro.

Expose the count of index searches/index descents in EXPLAIN ANALYZE's
output for index scan/index-only scan/bitmap index scan nodes. This
information is particularly useful with scans that use ScalarArrayOp
quals, where the number of index searches can be unpredictable due to
implementation details that interact with physical index characteristics
(at least with nbtree SAOP scans, since Postgres 17 commit 5bf748b8).
The information shown also provides useful context when EXPLAIN ANALYZE
runs a plan with an index scan node that successfully applied the skip
scan optimization (set to be added to nbtree by an upcoming patch).
The instrumentation works by teaching all index AMs to increment a new
nsearches counter whenever a new index search begins. The counter is
incremented at exactly the same point that index AMs already increment
the pg_stat_*_indexes.idx_scan counter (we're counting the same event,
but at the scan level rather than the relation level). Parallel queries
have workers copy their local counter struct into shared memory when an
index scan node ends -- even when it isn't a parallel aware scan node.
An earlier version of this patch that only worked with parallel aware
scans became commit 5ead85fb (though that was quickly reverted by commit
d00107cd following "debug_parallel_query=regress" buildfarm failures).
Our approach doesn't match the approach used when tracking other index
scan related costs (e.g., "Rows Removed by Filter:"). It is comparable
to the approach used in similar cases involving costs that are only
readily accessible inside an access method, not from the executor proper
(e.g., "Heap Blocks:" output for a Bitmap Heap Scan, which was recently
enhanced to show per-worker costs by commit 5a1e6df3, using essentially
the same scheme as the one used here). It is necessary for index AMs to
have direct responsibility for maintaining the new counter, since the
counter might need to be incremented multiple times per amgettuple call
(or per amgetbitmap call). But it is also necessary for the executor
proper to manage the shared memory now used to transfer each worker's
counter struct to the leader.

This commit shows test failures with debug_parallel_query=regress. The
underlying issue needs to be debugged, so revert for now.
Expose the count of index searches/index descents in EXPLAIN ANALYZE's
output for index scan nodes. This information is particularly useful

Stop comparing access method OID values against HASH_AM_OID and
BTREE_AM_OID, and instead check the IndexAmRoutine for an index to see
if it advertises its ability to perform the necessary ordering,
hashing, or cross-type comparing functionality. A field amcanorder
already existed, this uses it more widely. Fields amcanhash and
amcancrosscompare are added for the other purposes.

This function is used in both vacuum and analyze code paths, and a
follow-up commit will require distinguishing between the two. This
commit forces callers to specify whether they are in a vacuum or
analyze path, but it does not use that information for anything
yet.

For each Index AM, provide a mapping between operator strategies and
the system-wide generic concept of a comparison type. For example,
for btree, BTLessStrategyNumber maps to and from COMPARE_LT. Numerous
places in the planner and executor think directly in terms of btree
strategy numbers (and a few in terms of hash strategy numbers.) These
should be converted over subsequent commits to think in terms of
CompareType instead. (This commit doesn't make any use of this API
yet.)

The index access methods all had similar code that copied the
passed-in scan keys to local storage. They all used memmove() for
that, which is not wrong, but it seems confusing not to use memcpy()
when that would work. Presumably, this was all once copied from
ancient code and never adjusted.

The only current implementation is for btree where it calls
_bt_getrootheight(). Other index types can now also use this to pass
information to their amcostestimate routine. Previously, btree was
hardcoded and other index types could not hook into the optimizer at
this point.

There are a lot of Perl scripts in the tree, mostly code generation
and TAP tests. Occasionally, these scripts produce warnings. These
are probably always mistakes on the developer side (true positives).
Typical examples are warnings from genbki.pl or related when you make
a mess in the catalog files during development, or warnings from tests
when they massage a config file that looks different on different
hosts, or mistakes during merges (e.g., duplicate subroutine
definitions), or just mistakes that weren't noticed because there is a
lot of output in a verbose build.
This changes all warnings into fatal errors, by replacing
use warnings;
by
use warnings FATAL => 'all';
in all Perl files.

Allow using multiple worker processes to build BRIN index, which until
now was supported only for BTREE indexes. For large tables this often
results in significant speedup when the build is CPU-bound.
The work is split in a simple way - each worker builds BRIN summaries on
a subset of the table, determined by the regular parallel scan used to
read the data, and feeds them into a shared tuplesort which sorts them
by blkno (start of the range). The leader then reads this sorted stream
of ranges, merges duplicates (which may happen if the parallel scan does
not align with BRIN pages_per_range), and adds the resulting ranges into
the index.
The number of duplicate results produced by workers (requiring merging
in the leader process) should be fairly small, thanks to how parallel
scans assign chunks to workers. The likelihood of duplicate results may
increase for higher pages_per_range values, but then there are fewer
page ranges in total. In any case, we expect the merging to be much
cheaper than summarization, so this should be a win.
Most of the parallelism infrastructure is a simplified copy of the code
used by BTREE indexes, omitting the parts irrelevant for BRIN indexes
(e.g. uniqueness checks).
This also introduces a new index AM flag amcanbuildparallel, determining
whether to attempt to start parallel workers for the index build.

The brininsert code used to initialize (and destroy) BrinDesc and
BrinRevmap for each tuple, which is not free. This patch initializes
these structures only once, and reuses them for all inserts in the same
command. The data is passed through indexInfo->ii_AmCache.
This also introduces an optional AM callback "aminsertcleanup" that
allows performing custom cleanup in case simply pfree-ing ii_AmCache is
not sufficient (which is the case when the cache contains TupleDesc,
Buffers, and so on).

Some of the ambuildempty functions used smgrwrite() directly, followed
by smgrimmedsync(). A few small problems with that:
Firstly, one is supposed to use smgrextend() when extending a
relation, not smgrwrite(). It doesn't make much difference in
production builds. smgrextend() updates the relation size cache, so
you miss that, but that's harmless because we never use the cached
relation size of an init fork. But if you compile with
CHECK_WRITE_VS_EXTEND, you get an assertion failure.
Secondly, the smgrwrite() calls were performed before WAL-logging, so
the page image written to disk had 0/0 as the LSN, not the LSN of the
WAL record. That's also harmless in practice, but seems sloppy.
Thirdly, it's better to use the buffer cache, because then you don't
need to smgrimmedsync() the relation to disk, which adds latency.
Bypassing the cache makes sense for bulk operations like index
creation, but not when you're just initializing an empty index.
Creation of unlogged tables is hardly performance bottleneck in any
real world applications, but nevertheless.
Backpatch to v16, but no further. These issues should be harmless in
practice, so better to not rock the boat in older branches.

Commit 31966b15 invented a way for functions dealing with relation
extension to accept a Relation in online code and an SMgrRelation in
recovery code. It seems highly likely that future bufmgr.c interfaces
will face the same problem, and need to do something similar.
Generalize the names so that each interface doesn't have to re-invent
the wheel.
Back-patch to 16. Since extension AM authors might start using the
constructor macros once 16 ships, we agreed to do the rename in 16
rather than waiting for 17.

This removes md5() function calls from these test suites:
- bloom
- test_decoding
- isolation
- recovery
- subscription
This covers all remaining test suites where md5() calls were just used
to generate some random data and can be replaced by appropriately
adapted sha256() calls. This will eventually allow these tests to
pass in OpenSSL FIPS mode (which does not allow MD5 use). See also
208bf364a9. Unlike for the main regression tests, I didn't write a
fipshash() wrapper here, because that would have been too repetitive
and wouldn't really save much here. In some cases it was easier to
remove one layer of indirection by changing column types from text to
bytea.

In order to have the option to use O_DIRECT/FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING in a
later commit, we need the addresses of user space buffers to be well
aligned. The exact requirements vary by OS and file system (typically
sectors and/or memory pages). The address alignment size is set to
4096, which is enough for currently known systems: it matches modern
sectors and common memory page size. There is no standard governing
O_DIRECT's requirements so we might eventually have to reconsider this
with more information from the field or future systems.
Aligning I/O buffers on memory pages is also known to improve regular
buffered I/O performance.
Three classes of I/O buffers for regular data pages are adjusted:
(1) Heap buffers are now allocated with the new palloc_aligned() or
MemoryContextAllocAligned() functions introduced by commit 439f6175.
(2) Stack buffers now use a new struct PGIOAlignedBlock to respect
PG_IO_ALIGN_SIZE, if possible with this compiler. (3) The buffer
pool is also aligned in shared memory.
WAL buffers were already aligned on XLOG_BLCKSZ. It's possible for
XLOG_BLCKSZ to be configured smaller than PG_IO_ALIGNED_SIZE and thus
for O_DIRECT WAL writes to fail to be well aligned, but that's a
pre-existing condition and will be addressed by a later commit.
BufFiles are not yet addressed (there's no current plan to use O_DIRECT
for those, but they could potentially get some incidental speedup even
in plain buffered I/O operations through better alignment).
If we can't align stack objects suitably using the compiler extensions
we know about, we disable the use of O_DIRECT by setting PG_O_DIRECT to
0. This avoids the need to consider systems that have O_DIRECT but
can't align stack objects the way we want; such systems could in theory
be supported with more work but we don't currently know of any such
machines, so it's easier to pretend there is no O_DIRECT support
instead. That's an existing and tested class of system.
Add assertions that all buffers passed into smgrread(), smgrwrite() and
smgrextend() are correctly aligned, unless PG_O_DIRECT is 0 (= stack
alignment tricks may be unavailable) or the block size has been set too
small to allow arrays of buffers to be all aligned.

A few places are not converted. Some because they are tackled in later
commits (e.g. hio.c, xlogutils.c), some because they are more
complicated (e.g. brin_pageops.c). Having a few users of ReadBuffer(P_NEW) is
good anyway, to ensure the backward compat path stays working.

Test files should now ignore has_wal_read_bug() so long as
wait_for_catchup() is their only known way of reaching the bug. That's
at least five files today, a number expected to grow over time. This
commit removes skip logic from three. By doing so, systems having the
bug regain the ability to catch other kinds of defects via those three
tests. The other two, 002_databases.pl and 031_recovery_conflict.pl,
have been unprotected. Back-patch to v15, where done_testing() first
became our standard.

This substantially speeds up building for windows, due to the vast amount of
headers included via windows.h. A cross build from linux targetting mingw goes
from
994.11user 136.43system 0:31.58elapsed 3579%CPU
to
422.41user 89.05system 0:14.35elapsed 3562%CPU
The wins on windows are similar-ish (but I don't have a system at hand just
now for actual numbers). Targetting other operating systems the wins are far
smaller (tested linux, macOS, FreeBSD).
For now precompiled headers are disabled by default, it's not clear how well
they work on all platforms. E.g. on FreeBSD gcc doesn't seem to have working
support, but clang does.
When doing a full build precompiled headers are only beneficial for targets
with multiple .c files, as meson builds a separate precompiled header for each
target (so that different compilation options take effect). This commit
therefore only changes target with at least two .c files to use precompiled
headers.
Because this commit adds b_pch=false to the default_options new build
directories will have precompiled headers disabled by default, however
existing build directories will continue use the default value of b_pch, which
is true.
Note that using precompiled headers with ccache requires setting
CCACHE_SLOPPINESS=pch_defines,time_macros to get hits.

The generated resource files aren't exactly the same ones as the old
buildsystems generate. Previously "InternalName" and "OriginalFileName" were
mostly wrong / not set (despite being required), but that was hard to fix in
at least the make build. Additionally, the meson build falls back to a
"auto-generated" description when not set, and doesn't set it in a few cases -
unlikely that anybody looks at these descriptions in detail.

Autoconf is showing its age, fewer and fewer contributors know how to wrangle
it. Recursive make has a lot of hard to resolve dependency issues and slow
incremental rebuilds. Our home-grown MSVC build system is hard to maintain for
developers not using Windows and runs tests serially. While these and other
issues could individually be addressed with incremental improvements, together
they seem best addressed by moving to a more modern build system.
After evaluating different build system choices, we chose to use meson, to a
good degree based on the adoption by other open source projects.
We decided that it's more realistic to commit a relatively early version of
the new build system and mature it in tree.
This commit adds an initial version of a meson based build system. It supports
building postgres on at least AIX, FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
Solaris and Windows (however only gcc is supported on aix, solaris). For
Windows/MSVC postgres can now be built with ninja (faster, particularly for
incremental builds) and msbuild (supporting the visual studio GUI, but
building slower).
Several aspects (e.g. Windows rc file generation, PGXS compatibility, LLVM
bitcode generation, documentation adjustments) are done in subsequent commits
requiring further review. Other aspects (e.g. not installing test-only
extensions) are not yet addressed.
When building on Windows with msbuild, builds are slower when using a visual
studio version older than 2019, because those versions do not support
MultiToolTask, required by meson for intra-target parallelism.
The plan is to remove the MSVC specific build system in src/tools/msvc soon
after reaching feature parity. However, we're not planning to remove the
autoconf/make build system in the near future. Likely we're going to keep at
least the parts required for PGXS to keep working around until all supported
versions build with meson.

This replaces all MemSet() calls with struct initialization where that
is easily and obviously possible. (For example, some cases have to
worry about padding bits, so I left those.)
(The same could be done with appropriate memset() calls, but this
patch is part of an effort to phase out MemSet(), so it doesn't touch
memset() calls.)

We have been using the term RelFileNode to refer to either (1) the
integer that is used to name the sequence of files for a certain relation
within the directory set aside for that tablespace/database combination;
or (2) that value plus the OIDs of the tablespace and database; or
occasionally (3) the whole series of files created for a relation
based on those values. Using the same name for more than one thing is
confusing.
Replace RelFileNode with RelFileNumber when we're talking about just the
single number, i.e. (1) from above, and with RelFileLocator when we're
talking about all the things that are needed to locate a relation's files
on disk, i.e. (2) from above. In the places where we refer to (3) as
a relfilenode, instead refer to "relation storage".
Since there is a ton of SQL code in the world that knows about
pg_class.relfilenode, don't change the name of that column, or of other
SQL-facing things that derive their name from it.
On the other hand, do adjust closely-related internal terminology. For
example, the structure member names dbNode and spcNode appear to be
derived from the fact that the structure itself was called RelFileNode,
so change those to dbOid and spcOid. Likewise, various variables with
names like rnode and relnode get renamed appropriately, according to
how they're being used in context.
Hopefully, this is clearer than before. It is also preparation for
future patches that intend to widen the relfilenumber fields from its
current width of 32 bits. Variables that store a relfilenumber are now
declared as type RelFileNumber rather than type Oid; right now, these
are the same, but that can now more easily be changed.

Because this strategy logs changes on a block-by-block basis, it
avoids the need to checkpoint before and after the operation.
However, because it logs each changed block individually, it might
generate a lot of extra write-ahead logging if the template database
is large. Therefore, the older strategy remains available via a new
STRATEGY parameter to CREATE DATABASE, and a corresponding --strategy
option to createdb.
Somewhat controversially, this patch assembles the list of relations
to be copied to the new database by reading the pg_class relation of
the template database. Cross-database access like this isn't normally
possible, but it can be made to work here because there can't be any
connections to the database being copied, nor can it contain any
in-doubt transactions. Even so, we have to use lower-level interfaces
than normal, since the table scan and relcache interfaces will not
work for a database to which we're not connected. The advantage of
this approach is that we do not need to rely on the filesystem to
determine what ought to be copied, but instead on PostgreSQL's own
knowledge of the database structure. This avoids, for example,
copying stray files that happen to be located in the source database
directory.

Rather than doing manual book keeping to plan the number of tests to run
in each TAP suite, conclude each run with done_testing() summing up the
the number of tests that ran. This removes the need for maintaning and
updating the plan count at the expense of an accurate count of remaining
during the test suite runtime.
This patch has been discussed a number of times, often in the context of
other patches which updates tests, so a larger number of discussions can
be found in the archives.

The five modules in our TAP test framework all had names in the top
level namespace. This is unwise because, even though we're not
exporting them to CPAN, the names can leak, for example if they are
exported by the RPM build process. We therefore move the modules to the
PostgreSQL::Test namespace. In the process PostgresNode is renamed to
Cluster, and TestLib is renamed to Utils. PostgresVersion becomes simply
PostgreSQL::Version, to avoid possible confusion about what it's the
version of.

It turns out that the instability complained of in commit d3c09b9b1
has an embarrassingly simple explanation. The test script waits for
the standby to flush incoming WAL to disk, but it should wait for
the WAL to be replayed, since we are testing for the effects of that
to be visible.
While at it, use wait_for_catchup instead of reinventing that logic,
and adjust $Test::Builder::Level to improve future error reports.
Back-patch to v12 where the necessary infrastructure came in
(cf. aforesaid commit). Also back-patch 7d1aa6bf1 so that the
test will actually get run.

These tests were disabled back in 2018 (commit d3c09b9b1) because of
failures observed in the buildfarm. I've not been able to reproduce
any failure on longfin's host, though, so I'm curious whether or to
what extent we've fixed the problem. Let's re-enable it (in HEAD
only) and see what blows up.
