Christian Haudum	d8cc1cea83	chore: Make dedicated iterator package (#13273) ... Iterators of various types are widely used throughout the Loki code base. With the recent code additions of the bloom filters, a new set of utility functions for iterators emerged in `github.com/grafana/loki/v3/pkg/storage/bloom/v1`. The package defines interfaces for various common types, but also provides implementations to create and compose new iterators that implement these interfaces. This new package uses Go Generics. - However, at the current state, there are multiple iterator interfaces and implementations, which adds cognitive overhead in understanding how they work and which ones should be used. The idea is to unify them into a single iterator lib for Loki. - As a first step towards a single iterator library for the Loki code base, this PR moves the utilities from the `pkg/storage/bloom/v1` package to the `pkg/iter/v2` package. - Second, it changes the existing `EntryIterator` and `SampleIterator` iterators to "inherit" `v2.CloseIterator` in order to expose the same function names. - And lastly, naming conventions of iterator interfaces and structs are unified. Salva Corts	52a3f16039	Flag categorize labels on streams response (#10419) ... We recently introduced support for ingesting and querying structured metadata in Loki. This adds a new dimension to Loki's labels since now we arguably have three categories of labels: _stream_, _structured metadata_, and _parsed_ labels. Depending on the origin of the labels, they should be used in LogQL expressions differently to achieve optimal performance. _stream_ labels should be added to stream matchers, _structured metadata_ labels should be used in a filter expression before any parsing expression, and _parsed_ labels should be placed after the parser expression extracting them. The Grafana UI has a hard time dealing with this same problem. Before https://github.com/grafana/grafana/pull/73955, the filtering functionality in Grafana was broken since it was not able to distinguish between _stream_ and _structured metadata_ labels. Also, as soon as a parser expression was added to the query, filters added by Grafana would be appended to the end of the query regardless of the label category. The PR above implements a workaround for this problem but needs a better API on Loki's end to mitigate all corner cases. From a UX perspective, being able to categorize labels in metric queries doesn't have any benefit yet. Having said that, supporting this for metric queries would require some minor refactoring on top of what has been implemented here. If we decide to do that, I think we should do it on a separate PR to avoid making this PR even larger. I also decided to leave out support for Tail queries to avoid making this PR even larger. Once this one gets merged, we can work to support tailing. --- **Note to reviewers** This PR is huge since we need to forward categorized all over the codebase (from parsing logs all the way to marshaling), fortunately, many of the changes come from updating tests and refactoring iterators. Note that this PR doesn't change the defaults, but fixes some bugs that would prevent us from changing them in the future. The comment `"[we] pop the ones whose common value occurs most often."` did not appear to match the previous implementation, and no attempt was made to match this comment. A `Push()` function was added to `loser.Tree` to support live-streaming. This works by finding or making an empty slot, then re-running the initialize function to find the new winner. A consequence is that the previous "winner" value is lost after calling `Push()`, and users must call `Next()` to see the next item. I couldn't find an existing Loser Tree in Go, so I wrote my own; the file is 132 lines long. It uses generics in the hope it can also be applied elsewhere. Travis Patterson	a98b7ebaf4	Hide duplicates caused by stream sharding (#7005) ... As streams are sharded and resharded across different ingesters, the likelihood of duplicate logs being ingested increases dramatically. This removes duplicates at query time by dynamically removing the `__shard_stream__` label for both log and sample queries so the `stream hash` used by the `MergeEntryIterator` will match when doing comparisons for duplicates. The `stream hash` is created in either the `store` or `ingester instance` at query time so the labels are removed there. Additionally, the `MergeEntryIterator` has been modified to remove duplicates in a stream rather than just across streams. For completeness, `__shard_stream__` has also been removed from Label and Series Queries.	3 years ago

Instead of using a min or max heap the entry iterators are sorted at the beginning. Once the iteration starts only the first entry iterator is re-positioned depending on its current value. This will yield the same runtime complexity as the current heap based solution. However, since the new algorithm accesses the first element it can be cached. But we also reverse all iterators in the memchunk code, even the headchunk which causes reversal of already reversed entries. This PR skips reversal of the headchunk. Cyril Tovena	cd74043db9	Improve entry deduplication. (#2302) ... * Improve entry deduplication. This PR removes mostcommon and sort insert function in the heap iterator. I discovered while working on #2293 that those are actually not helping since we're deduping those lines anyways. There were no tests checking if deduping was correctly working so I did added those. Bonus point this means deduping will run faster and the code is less complex. The only side effect is that the order of entries that are at the same timestamp, before the most common entry would appear first, now we keep the same order as we stored them, which I think is better. I also change the label ordering, I think whether we are forward or backward we should keep the same aphabetical labels ordering not sure why direction was altering this before.
