Use metrics namespace for more metrics (#11025)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Use the metrics namespace setting instead of hardcoding to `cortex`.
This is a follow up to (and based on)
https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/11014.

Remove shared_store and shared_store_key_prefix from shipper and compactor (#10840)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
#### Removes `shared_store` and `shared_store_key_prefix` from index
shipper and compactor configs and their corresponding CLI flags.
- `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store`
- `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store`
- `-tsdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix`
- `-boltdb.shipper.shared-store.key-prefix`
- `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store`
- `-boltdb.shipper.compactor.shared-store.key-prefix`
`shared_store` has been a confusing option allowing users to easily
misconfigure Loki.
Going forward `object_store` setting in the
[period_config](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/configure/#period_config)
(which already configured the store for chunks) will be used to
configure store for the index.
And the newly added `path_prefix` option under the `index` key in
`period_config` will configure the path under which index tables are
stored.
This change enforces chunks and index files for a given period reside
together in the same storage bucket. More details in the upgrade guide.
---
`-compactor.delete-request-store` has to be **explicitly configured**
going forward. Without setting this, loki wouldn't know which object
store to use for storing delete requests. Path prefix for storing
deletes is decided by `-compactor.delete-request-store.key-prefix` which
defaults to `index/`.

Bug(LogQL): Fix mismatch results on `scalar` and `vector` binary ops (#10997)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
[According to LogQL
doc,](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/query/#comparison-operators)
binary operators between `scalar` and `vector` should behave as follows
(either it's `scalar` op `vector` or `vector` op `scalar`)
```
Between a vector and a scalar, these operators are applied to the value of every data sample in the vector
```
PromQL (where LogQL inspired from) [also works that
way](https://prometheus.io/docs/prometheus/latest/querying/operators/).
Currently LogQL violates this behaviour. It returns whatever on the
`left` (even if it's scalar). Look into the attached issue for more
details.
Changes:
1. Fixed `MergeBinOps` by making it aware when to return left or right
(depending on which is from vector originally)
2. Add tests in both `engine_test.go` and `evaluator_test.go` to lock
this behaviour
3. Added appropriate comments to the types and functions.
**Which issue(s) this PR fixes**:
Fixes https://github.com/grafana/loki/issues/10741

Improve observability of index queries (#11064)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Requests to the following APIs previously had limited or incorrect logging, which made understanding their behaviour at runtime difficult. [GET /loki/api/v1/labels](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/reference/api/#list-labels-within-a-range-of-time) [GET /loki/api/v1/label/<name>/values](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/reference/api/#list-label-values-within-a-range-of-time) [GET /loki/api/v1/series](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/reference/api/#list-series) [GET /loki/api/v1/index/stats](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/reference/api/#index-stats) [GET /loki/api/v1/index/volume](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/reference/api/#volume) [GET /loki/api/v1/index/volume_range](https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/reference/api/#volume) All of these APIs now have querier and query-frontend logs; sharding and time-based splitting are applied to these requests, and it's valuable to see all requests. |

Stop processing split queries on first error. (#11067)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
The `TestMetricsTripperware` became flaky after #10688. The race
condition in the splitter has been there before but the change exposed
it. When an error occurs, e.g. when query would be too large, the
splitter would return. However, there was a small time window when the
loop could still be fed a new request. #10688 just amplified this effect
because it removed the serialization of requests and responses.

ksonnet: do not deploy table manager when shipper is in-use (#11020)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Do not generate table manager manifests if shipper is being used.
table manager is a deprecated target and is not recommended when using
`tsdb` or `boltdb-shipper` indexes.
Compactor is already bunlded along with shipper and handles retention,
compaction for the `tsdb` and `boltb-shipper` indexes

fix(deps): update module google.golang.org/grpc [security] (main) (#11031)
[](https://renovatebot.com) This PR contains the following updates: | Package | Type | Update | Change | |---|---|---|---| | [google.golang.org/grpc](https://togithub.com/grpc/grpc-go) | require | minor | `v1.53.0` -> `v1.56.3` | | [google.golang.org/grpc](https://togithub.com/grpc/grpc-go) | require | patch | `v1.58.2` -> `v1.58.3` | ### GitHub Vulnerability Alerts #### [GHSA-m425-mq94-257g](https://togithub.com/grpc/grpc-go/security/advisories/GHSA-m425-mq94-257g) ### Impact In affected releases of gRPC-Go, it is possible for an attacker to send HTTP/2 requests, cancel them, and send subsequent requests, which is valid by the HTTP/2 protocol, but would cause the gRPC-Go server to launch more concurrent method handlers than the configured maximum stream limit. ### Patches This vulnerability was addressed by #6703 and has been included in patch releases: 1.56.3, 1.57.1, 1.58.3. It is also included in the latest release, 1.59.0. Along with applying the patch, users should also ensure they are using the `grpc.MaxConcurrentStreams` server option to apply a limit to the server's resources used for any single connection. ### Workarounds None. ### References #6703 --- ### Release Notes <details> <summary>grpc/grpc-go (google.golang.org/grpc)</summary> ### [`v1.56.3`](https://togithub.com/grpc/grpc-go/releases/tag/v1.56.3): Release 1.56.3 [Compare Source](https://togithub.com/grpc/grpc-go/compare/v1.56.2...v1.56.3) ### Security - server: prohibit more than MaxConcurrentStreams handlers from running at once (CVE-2023-44487) In addition to this change, applications should ensure they do not leave running tasks behind related to the RPC before returning from method handlers, or should enforce appropriate limits on any such work. ### [`v1.56.2`](https://togithub.com/grpc/grpc-go/releases/tag/v1.56.2): Release 1.56.2 [Compare Source](https://togithub.com/grpc/grpc-go/compare/v1.56.1...v1.56.2) - status: To fix a panic, `status.FromError` now returns an error with `codes.Unknown` when the error implements the `GRPCStatus()` method, and calling `GRPCStatus()` returns `nil`. Refactor the proto Request interface to return time.Time (#11018)
Part of our query path improvements. In addition to Karstens new protobuf formats for all the query request and responses, plus our use of just proto grpc rather than httpgrpc, we'd like refactor the proto Request interface to return time.Time for start and end instead of int64. This will allow his protobuf formats to use more `logproto` proto types. There's still one or two tests that I need to fix. --------- Signed-off-by: Callum Styan <callumstyan@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Karsten Jeschkies <karsten.jeschkies@grafana.com> |

Flag categorize labels on streams response (#10419)
We recently introduced support for ingesting and querying structured metadata in Loki. This adds a new dimension to Loki's labels since now we arguably have three categories of labels: _stream_, _structured metadata_, and _parsed_ labels. Depending on the origin of the labels, they should be used in LogQL expressions differently to achieve optimal performance. _stream_ labels should be added to stream matchers, _structured metadata_ labels should be used in a filter expression before any parsing expression, and _parsed_ labels should be placed after the parser expression extracting them. The Grafana UI has a hard time dealing with this same problem. Before https://github.com/grafana/grafana/pull/73955, the filtering functionality in Grafana was broken since it was not able to distinguish between _stream_ and _structured metadata_ labels. Also, as soon as a parser expression was added to the query, filters added by Grafana would be appended to the end of the query regardless of the label category. The PR above implements a workaround for this problem but needs a better API on Loki's end to mitigate all corner cases. Loki currently returns the following JSON for log queries: ```json ... { "stream": { "cluster": "us-central", "container": "query-frontend", "namespace": "loki", "level": "info", "traceID": "68810cf0c94bfcca" }, "values": [ [ "1693996529000222496", "1693996529000222496 aaaaaaaaa.....\n" ], ... }, { "stream": { "cluster": "us-central", "container": "query-frontend", "namespace": "loki", "level": "debug", "traceID": "a7116cj54c4bjz8s" }, "values": [ [ "1693996529000222497", "1693996529000222497 bbbbbbbbb.....\n" ], ... }, ... ``` As can be seen, there is no way we can distinguish the category of each label. This PR introduces a new flag `X-Loki-Response-Encoding-Flags: categorize-labels` that makes Loki return categorized labels as follows: ```json ... { "stream": { "cluster": "us-central", "container": "query-frontend", "namespace": "loki", }, "values": [ [ "1693996529000222496", "1693996529000222496 aaaaaaaaa.....\n", { "structuredMetadata": { "traceID": "68810cf0c94bfcca" }, "parsed": { "level": "info" } } ], [ "1693996529000222497", "1693996529000222497 bbbbbbbbb.....\n", { "structuredMetadata": { "traceID": "a7116cj54c4bjz8s" }, "parsed": { "level": "debug" } } ], ... }, ... ``` Note that this PR only supports log queries, not metric queries. From a UX perspective, being able to categorize labels in metric queries doesn't have any benefit yet. Having said that, supporting this for metric queries would require some minor refactoring on top of what has been implemented here. If we decide to do that, I think we should do it on a separate PR to avoid making this PR even larger. I also decided to leave out support for Tail queries to avoid making this PR even larger. Once this one gets merged, we can work to support tailing. --- **Note to reviewers** This PR is huge since we need to forward categorized all over the codebase (from parsing logs all the way to marshaling), fortunately, many of the changes come from updating tests and refactoring iterators. Tested out in a dev cell with query `'{stream="stdout"} | label_format new="text"`. - Without the new flag: ``` $ http http://127.0.0.1:3100/loki/api/v1/query_range\?direction\=BACKWARD\&end\=1693996529322486000\&limit\=30\&query\=%7Bstream%3D%22stdout%22%7D+%7C+label_format+new%3D%22text%22\&start\=1693992929322486000 X-Scope-Orgid:REDACTED { "data": { "result": [ { "stream": { "new": "text", "pod": "loki-canary-986bd6f4b-xqmb7", "stream": "stdout" }, "values": [ [ "1693996529000222496", "1693996529000222496 pppppppppppp...\n" ], [ "1693996528499160852", "1693996528499160852 pppppppppppp...\n" ], ... ``` - With the new flag ``` $ http http://127.0.0.1:3100/loki/api/v1/query_range\?direction\=BACKWARD\&end\=1693996529322486000\&limit\=30\&query\=%7Bstream%3D%22stdout%22%7D+%7C+label_format+new%3D%22text%22\&start\=1693992929322486000 X-Scope-Orgid:REDACTED X-Loki-Response-Encoding-Flags:categorize-labels { "data": { "encodingFlags": [ "categorize-labels" ], "result": [ { "stream": { "pod": "loki-canary-986bd6f4b-xqmb7", "stream": "stdout" }, "values": [ [ "1693996529000222496", "1693996529000222496 pppppppppppp...\n", { "parsed": { "new": "text" } } ], [ "1693996528499160852", "1693996528499160852 pppppppppppp...\n", { "parsed": { "new": "text" } } ], ... ``` |

Turn frontend Tripperware into a Middleware. (#10688)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Currently, a request to Loki's frontend API goes through these
conversions:
```
http.Request
↓ limitedRoundTripper
queryrangebase.Request
↓ queryrangebase.Middlware
…
↓
queryrangebase.Request
↓ limitedRoundTripper
http.Request
↓ grpcRoundTripperAdapter
httpgrpc
↓ grpcRoundTripperAdapter
http.Response
↓ limitedRoundTripper
queryrangebase.Response
↓ limitedRoundtripper
http.Response
```
Since `httgrpc` and `queryrangebase.Request` are Protobufs there's no
good reason to encode and decode them to HTTP responses/requests.
Furthermore, the encoding to HTTP makes it harder for us to encode query
plans.
Thus the conversions are changed to the following:
```
http.Request
↓
queryrangebase.Request
↓ queryrangebase.Middlware
…
↓
queryrangebase.Request
↓
httpgrpc
↓
queryrangebase.Response
↓
http.Response
```
In order to achieve this the `http.RoundTripper` is pushed to the
outside. Only the serialization layer from `http.Request` to
`queryrangebase.Request` and `http.Response` to
`queryrangebase.Response` will be an `http.RoundTripper`. Everything
else is either a `queryrangebase.Handler` or
`queryrangebase.Middleware`.

ingestion: native otlp ingestion support (#10727)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Add support for natively supporting logs ingestion in OTLP format. `/otlp/v1/logs` is the new endpoint where users can push logs in OTLP format. It accepts logs serialized in JSON or proto format. Since OTEL format is very different than what Loki storage model, here is how data in OTEL format will be mapped to Loki data model: * Index labels: The Resource Attributes map quite well to Index labels in Loki since both usually identify the source of the logs. The problem however is that Resource attributes in OTLP can have an unbounded number of values while Loki has a default limit of having up to 30 labels. Since Index labels in Loki can largely drive the kind of querying experience the users are going to have, we have chosen select attributes which would be picked as Index Labels. The ones that are not picked up as Index labels would be stored as Structured Metadata with each log entry. * Timestamp: LogRecord.TimeUnixNano * LogLine: LogRecord.Body holds the body of the log. However, since Loki only supports Log body in string format, we will stringify non-string values using [AsString method from OTEL collector lib]( |

Deprecated/Deleted Config Checker tool (#10977)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR adds a new _deprecated/deleted config checker_ tool to allow users upgrading from previous Loki versions to check their Loki config and runtime config for deprecated and deleted options, as well as providing them with alternatives and reasons why those configs were deprecated/deleted. Mimir provides a [tool][1] that allows users to migrate their old configs to new ones. Having that is our future goal but the new tool in this PR is a good middle ground for the short-mid term. We also update the checklist in the PR template to ask contributors to update the tool source of truth if the contributor is deprecating or deleting a config. Here's an example for how to use the tool: ```bash go run tools/deprecated-config-checker/main.go \ -config.file tools/deprecated-config-checker/test-fixtures/config.yaml \ -runtime-config.file tools/deprecated-config-checker/test-fixtures/runtime-config.yaml ``` And this is an example output: ### Notes I think I've gone through all the deprecated and deleted configs. I cannot find the config pointed by the deprecated `ruler.storage`. It states ``` ruler: ... # Deprecated: Use -ruler-storage. CLI flags and their respective YAML config # options instead. storage: ... ``` I couldn't find that `-ruler-storage` cli flag nor the YAML definition. Introduce worker queue in bloom gateway (#10976)
Instead of calling the bloom store directly on each and every request to filter chunk refs based on the given filters, we want to queue requests in per-tenant queues and process batches of requests that can be multiplexed to avoid excessive seeking in the bloom block queriers when checking chunk matches. This PR re-uses the request queue implementation used in the query scheduler. To do so, it moves the queue related code from the scheduler into a separate package `pkg/queue` and renames occurrences of "querier" to "consumer" to be more generic. The bloom gateway instantiates the request queue when starting the service. The gRPC method `FilterChunkRefs` then enqueues incoming requests to that queue. **Special notes for your reviewer**: For testing purposes, this PR also contains a dummy implementation of the workers. The worker implementation - which includes multiplexing of multiple tasks - is subject to a separate PR. --------- Signed-off-by: Christian Haudum <christian.haudum@gmail.com> |

Loki: introduce an exponential backoff on failed query retries. (#10959)
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Currently any subquery which fails with a 5xx status code is retried by
the query frontend immediately, and by default will make a total of 5
attempts to execute the subquery, ultimately failing the query if you
exhaust those attempts.
We notice there are times when subqueries can fail extremely quickly,
mostly around queriers handling various GRPC related issues between
components like ingesters or index gateways.
In these cases a query will exhaust all the retries in less than a
second and fail back to the user.
Also in cases where a query is causing a lot of memory pressure on a
pool of queriers leading to OOM crashes of queriers, the lack of a
backoff on retries can make this behavior quite aggressive and
potentially cause disruption if you don't have enough queriers
available.
This PR introduces a simple exponential backoff on retries of failed
queries to allow for the downstream GRPC issues to have time to sort out
as well as causing queries causing a lot of memory pressure and OOMing
to be slowed down and minimize their impact slightly.

Adjust bloom gateway request structure (#10926)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Since we already group chunkRefs by fingerprint on the client side to determine the correct bloom gateway to send the request to, we can keep the grouping for the gRPC request. This will not only optimize the request size, but also helps to reduce complexity of querying blooms on the bloom gateway itself. There is still conversion between `[]*logproto.ShortRef` and `v1.ChunkRefs` required, which could be removed by sending `v1.ChunkRefs` over the wire. **Special notes for your reviewer**: Signed-off-by: Christian Haudum <christian.haudum@gmail.com> |
