Helm: Quote tenantId value in logsInstance (#9486)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Quotes the value of `tenantId` for the cases where tenantId is made up of only numerical values (i.e. if tenantId is `0`) the motivation for this is that we have long used the tenant id `0` in our loki instance for some stuff. We probably should fix that, but it's going to be easier (at least for us) to patch this than to rename this tenant or migrate to a new tenant. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: N/A - If you'd like me to file an issue to track this there as well, let me know and i'll write one up. i figured this fix was simple enough **Special notes for your reviewer**: **Checklist** - [x] Reviewed the [`CONTRIBUTING.md`](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) guide (**required**) - [x] Documentation added - [x] Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [x] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` |

Helm: Support of extraVolumeClaimTemplates for writer statefulset (#9485)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR adds `extraVolumeClaimTemplates` value for write loki component, it allows to have more than one volume claims for persistent statefulset configuration. For example, when it's needed to have ingester's and shipper's WAL files on different persistent volumes. **Special notes for your reviewer**: **Checklist** - [X] Reviewed the [`CONTRIBUTING.md`](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) guide (**required**) - [X] Documentation added - [x] Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [x] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` --------- Co-authored-by: J Stickler <julie.stickler@grafana.com> |

Fix query behavior in Single Binary and SSD deployments (#9476)
To keep ingesters from calling themselves, the AsyncStore was only being used when the module was `Querier`, `Ruler`, or `Read`. This means that, for some operations, ingesters were never queries when the deployment mode was single-binary or `Backend` (where the ruler now lives). This change scopes the async store to just the querier rather than all storage access and always includes in it queriers. Because the `AsyncStore` isn't automatically instantiated, now, I've also moved `IngesterQuerier` to be a dependency to the store. That way anything that wants to make an `AsyncStore` is guaranteed to have what it needs. |

Promtail: Fix goroutine leak in file tailer (#9495)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: There's a goroutine leak in promtail file tailer, which has been encountered in https://github.com/grafana/agent/issues/3885. The issue is the following: - There are two goroutines that tailer manages: one for reading lines, the other for updating positions: https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/clients/pkg/promtail/targets/file/tailer.go#L103 - The tailer can be cleanly stopped & drained via `.Stop()` https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/clients/pkg/promtail/targets/file/tailer.go#L221 - But if the goroutine reading lines encounters an error from the underlying `tail`, the tailer is stopped without draining using the defer statement here: https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/clients/pkg/promtail/targets/file/tailer.go#L151 - The above defer statement does not shut down the position updating goroutine and the `.Stop()` won't be called, so we end up with a leaked goroutine. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes https://github.com/grafana/agent/issues/3885 As can be seen in the [goroutine dump attached to the issue](https://gist.github.com/amseager/e37f31984facd9cbc51ce0f2153d6864), there were 933 update position goroutines, while we only had 21 files being tailed. **Special notes for your reviewer**: **Checklist** - [x] Reviewed the [`CONTRIBUTING.md`](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) guide (**required**) - [x] Tests updated - [x] `CHANGELOG.md` updated |

helm: release a new helm charts to use k8s service for discover query-scheduler replicas (#9477)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: Currently, we have a bug in our code when running Loki in SSD mode and using the ring for query-scheduler discovery. It causes queries to not be distributed to all the available read pods. I have explained the issue in detail in [the PR which fixes the code](https://github.com/grafana/loki/pull/9471). Since this bug causes a major query performance impact and code release might take time, in this PR we are doing a new helm release which fixes the issue by using the k8s service for discovering `query-scheduler` replicas. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes #9195 |

Notification based Promtail WAL Watcher polling approach (#9135)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: This PR implements a new mechanism for the wal Watcher in Promtail, to know there are new records to be read. It uses a combination of: - https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/pull/11950 - https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/pull/11949 The main idea is that the primary mechanism is a notification channel between the `wal.Writer` and `wal.Watcher`. The Watcher subscribes to write events the writer publishes, getting notified if the wal has been written. The same subscriptions design is used for cleanup events. As a backup, the watcher has a timer that implements an exponential backoff strategy, which is constrained by a minimum and maximum that the user can configure. Below the cpu difference is shown of running both main and this branch against the same scrape target. <img width="2496" alt="image" src="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/2617411/232099483-7e5c36fa-9360-4eb9-8240-687adf46e330.png"> The yellow line is the latest main build from where this branch started, and the green line is this branch. Both promtails tailing docker logs, and using the following metrics to get cpu usage from cadvisor: ``` avg by (name) (rate(container_cpu_usage_seconds_total{job=~".+", instance=~".+", name=~"promtail-wal-test_promtail.+"}[$__rate_interval])) ``` **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Part of https://github.com/grafana/loki/issues/8197 **Special notes for your reviewer**: **Checklist** - [ ] Reviewed the [`CONTRIBUTING.md`](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) guide (**required**) - [ ] Documentation added - [ ] Tests updated - [ ] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [ ] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` |

Helm: Allow cluster label to be something other than loki.fullname (#9218)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: The default behavior for this helm chart is to add a `cluster` label to its rules and monitoring. Reuse string/InstanceDesc buffers in index gateway clients (#9341)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: When running the IndexGateway in ring mode, `ring.MakeBuffersForGet()` in the index gateway client allocated fixed size `[]string`/`[]InstanceDesc` slices with a capacity of 5 for each and every request. By using a `sync.Pool` the client can reduce the amount of allocations. Additionally, since we run the index gateway ring with a high replication factor to be able to scale them better horizontally, an initial capacity of 5 is most of the time too low, leading to extra allocations when growing the capacity of the slice. **Checklist** - [ ] Reviewed the [`CONTRIBUTING.md`](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) guide (**required**) - [ ] Documentation added - [ ] Tests updated - [ ] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [ ] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` --------- Signed-off-by: Christian Haudum <christian.haudum@gmail.com> |

Fix case insensitive label filter (#9404)
**What this PR does / why we need it**: When comparing a case insensitive regular expression to a label value, Loki was only matching values that were in upper case. This was caused by compiling a case insensitive regular expression (such as `(?i)hello`), which produced an upper case `prefix` that was then used in `containsLower` as the `substr` value - but that function was written in such a way that only allowed matches of exact case or where the `line` value was upper case and the `substr` value was lower case. This PR added a some additional test cases to demonstrate/understand the issue, and adds two additional checks to the `containsLower` function to enable it to work correctly when either input is in either case. **Which issue(s) this PR fixes**: Fixes #9294 **Special notes for your reviewer**: Given the importance of this code path, I used `BenchmarkLineLabelFilters` to validate that the performance of this code was not affected. Overall, [the differences appeared negligible](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BRKkCzO0i11AObC6ADguDNa7cfG93hB7JLtqYWmnfW0/edit?usp=sharing) on my device (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700H). **Checklist** - [X] Reviewed the [`CONTRIBUTING.md`](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) guide (**required**) - [ ] Documentation added - [X] Tests updated - [ ] `CHANGELOG.md` updated - [ ] Changes that require user attention or interaction to upgrade are documented in `docs/sources/upgrading/_index.md` |

lambda-promtail: add terraform code to process s3 logs through SQS (#8700)
## Add Terraform sample code to process AWS S3 log files through an SQS queue Lambda-promtail supports processing AWS s3 logs files through an SQS queue since #8231 As explained in the [documentation section of lambda-promtail](https://github.com/grafana/loki/blob/main/docs/sources/clients/lambda-promtail/_index.md#triggering-lambda-promtail-via-sqs:~:text=Triggering%20Lambda%2DPromtail,DLQ%20redrive%20feature.), this can be leveraged to re-process logs that lambda-promtail failed to process (or send to loki) using a main SQS queue and a secondary SQS dead-letter queue. AWS has a feature called `SQS redrive`, which enables routing messages pending in the DLQ back to the main (source) queue. This PR demonstrates how to spin up this architecture using terraform. |
